Indian movie-maker Anurag Kashyap is hoping to impress industry bosses at the Cannes Film Festival in France in a bid to shake off the image of Bollywood musicals.
The director is in France for the annual gathering to showcase his new project, The Gangs of Wasseypur, and it's one of a handful of Indian dramas being unveiled at the event.
And Kashyap is adamant the movie industry in his native country is undergoing such a dramatic change that hard-hitting films could soon overshadow traditional, fun-filled Bollywood hits.
He tells the BBC, "The buzz is reassuring because we have often come here and were the big joke... There is a lot that is happening in India... It's going through real change in the kind of film-makers that are coming through and the kind of stories that are being told, the kinds of film being made and the kind of films that are working at the box office." »

Gangs of Wasseypur
With Gangs of Wasseypur, Anurag Kashyap’s quest for his distinctive cinematic style seems to have found a conclusion. While he reaffirms his position as a master craftsman of Indian cinema, his storytelling suffers at times from his keenness to trivialize emotions in favour of bizzare comedy. In GoW, his teenager-like fascination with talking sex continues. The film is engaging yet predictable both in story and storytelling. However, it is an important film in the career of the director as it solidifies his style and temperament.
Like his Black Friday, Kashyap utilises the tool of narration to set up the stage for a Godfather-esque saga involving three generations of rivalry. The comparisions to the Coppola masterpiece is inevitable here in the context of the overall narrative structure and especially the character played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

It's not often that filmmakers want to categorize their film with an adult tag, especially when aiming to make the maximum from the audience. Well, such is not the case with the film Trishna. Freida Pinto's forthcoming film Trishna, directed by Michael Winterbottom, has apparently applied for an 'A' certificate from the censor board. It is learnt that producer Sunil Bohra, contrary to popular opinion, feels that the Censor Board has become highly progressive. Since the film revolves around a love story with a sad ending with sequences that have references to the Kamasutra, the makers have applied for an 'A' Certificate. Trishna is an adaptation of Thomas Hardy's novel, Tess of the d'urbervilles., which opened at Iffi Goa last year. The story of the film starts off as a tale of romance, but later turns into a lustful affair in which Riz's character exploits Trishna (Freida) in the name of love. »

Monday was another rainy day on the Croisette as the Cannes Film Festival hit its half-way point. I spent most of my day room hopping around the Palais, trying to stay dry, and mingling with other journalists at a cocktail party in honor of Indian director Anurag Kashyap's new two-part film, "Gangs of Wasseypur." Sitting down to speak with Kashyap, I was shocked to find out that Back Stage and Bollywood are not separate entities."I love Back Stage," the famous Bollywood director who was behind the controversial and award-winning film "Black Friday" said. "I have lots of theater friends and actors who depend on Back Stage." “Gangs of Wasseypur” is part of Director's Fortnight, a sidebar of the Cannes Film Festival, and is not a typical Bollywood film. The movie spans six decades and three generations and tells the tale of feuding families set in a rural coaling community. »

For film lovers in India, the month of June seems to be a great month for indie-spirited cinema. Be it Dibakar Banerjee’s Shanghai or Anurag Kashyap’s Cannes pick Gangs of Wasseypur. Joining the bandwagon is a relatively obscure indie feature film which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles 2012. Karan Gour’s Kshay has been doing the festival rounds for the past 6 months bagging awards and high levels of critical acclaim. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on the 15th of June under the ‘PVR Director’s Rare’ label.
The film revolves around a lower middle-class housewife’s obsession to possess an unfinished statue of the Goddess Lakshmi. And how this obsession infects everything around her – her home, her dreams and even the only family she’s got, her husband Arvind.
Kshay has been produced independently over 4 years with a »

What Anurag Kashyap has managed to do with Gangs Of Wasseypur is unique. Apart from directing his first ever mainstream film, Anurag has roped in 340 actors for Gangs Of Wasseypur (Gow), making it one of the first films to ever have so many characters. The film that will be screened at the Cannes Film Festival in the Directors' Fortnight section will feature the crew attending the festival in a novel fashion. In fact everyone attending the screening will be wearing a "gamcha" around their neck irrespective of whether they are wearing a suit, tuxedos or gown, the gamcha will be a common accessory. The gamcha which is the trademark accessory up north was prominently featured even during the promotions of Wasseypur recently. Speaking about the impending Cannes visit, Anurag Kashyap says, "Gow has probably been the toughest and most fun we have had making films. It had 340 cast actors out of which 270 were speaking parts. »
