Denis Leary is a comedian known for his abrasive stand-up, which he decided to employ in his reaction to television legend Dick Clark's death.
Leary tweets, "With Dick Clark dead, Casey Kasem now reveling in his status as last and reigning king of leather faced syrup voiced lizard people."
Hmm. We've often felt that in the wake of tragic events or someone's death, it isn't so much about "too soon" as it is about "funny" or "not funny." There are usually good jokes to be made, if you look hard enough.
For example, Leary's first tweet about Dick Clark is kinda funny: "Dick Clark dead. Okay so now I'm starting to get a little more concerned about all this 2012 Mayan s***."
And Clark also cracks some jokes in reference to the Tupac hologram that appeared at Coachella this past weekend performing with Snoop Dogg: "I'm gonna package a »

My childhood had two DJs: Casey Kasem and Dick Clark. Long before I started to develop my own musical taste, it was dictated to me weekly by these musical titans: Clark through my weekly dose of “American Bandstand” on TV and Kasem via “American Top 40” on radio, which started at noon on Sundays (which meant I inevitably missed hearing Nos 40-36 since we wouldn’t be home from church yet when the countdown started, but that’s a story for another time). When word came down of Clark’s passing today from a massive heart attack at 82, my memory immediately turned to »

Veteran TV and radio personality/producer Dick Clark died on Wednesday, after suffering a massive heart attack. He was 82.
Clark long carried the nickname “America’s Oldest Teenager” after debuting American Bandstand in 1957. The music/dance showcase, hosted by Clark, ran daily through 1963, then went weekly.
Clark is also well-known for his eponymous TV fête, Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve, which he hosted every year since 1972 save for two occasions, including the first Nye following his late-2004 stroke. Since 2005, he has continued to appear on the countdown special, with American Idol‘s Ryan Seacrest assuming the bulk of hosting duties. »

For the past two years, I've been lucky enough to be a small part of a show called Portlandia. The series -- created by the prolifically talented Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein and returning on Friday for a second season -- has been described by many a stinging satire of Hipster culture. While it does parody Hipster earnestness, the show pays loving tribute to communities Like Portland everywhere -- Silver Lake, Austin, Bolder, Williamsburg, Minneapolis, Northampton, Berkeley, etc, etc, etc -- and much has been made about how the show has puts Hipster Culture in the spotlight.
I must say, however, Hipsters are not a new TV phenomenon. With thick glasses, just-so-avant-garde fashion and knowing smirks, Hipsters have had a special place on TV since the beginning of the medium -- even before the birth of the term. For more than half a century, TV Hipsters have had a profound effect on American culture. »
