The Dewey System: How to Make Friends the ‘Casual’ Way

5 July 2016 9:28 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Editor’s Note: This post is presented in support of Hulu’s original comedy series “Casual.” Watch new episodes on Tuesdays, streaming only on Hulu.

Cities can be scary places to make new friends. It can be hard enough just navigating between boroughs or through traffic, let alone forming bonds with people you may only have time to see once a week. Sure, texts and tweets help connect people in the modern world, but — similar to romantic relationships — you don’t want to come off as overbearing, clingy or “too” interested. So how do you solidify those friendships without alienating your would-be friends?

Let “Casual’s” Alex and his family of students teach you.

Played by Tommy Dewey on Hulu’s hit comedy, Alex has a way with people that’s hard to emulate, but not impossible. Below, we’ve collected a list of his techniques for meeting and sustaining relationships. »

Patrick Wilson Wishes Jessica Biel Were Dead In Trailer For ‘A Kind Of Murder’

Review: 'Casual' season 2 takes Michaela Watkins to uncomfortable new places

7 June 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

When I watch TV comedies, even the good ones, I often find myself wondering what cocktail of personality disorders would be required to make a real human being behave the way sitcom characters do to further stories and jokes. For the most part, those shows don't want their viewers to ask questions like that, treating references to abandonment issues or hyperactivity as just another humor source. With Casual, which begins its second season today on Hulu, the question of what the hell is wrong with these people isn't obscured subtext, but the whole point of the thing. Not only is its main character, Val (Michaela Watkins) a therapist, but she, brother Alex (Tommy Dewey), and her teenage daughter Laura (Tara Lynne Barr) are each extremely damaged. They're able to vaguely function as human beings when they work together as an unconventional family unit, but on a codependent, self-destructive level that »

Casual Season 2 Review

5 June 2016 11:48 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Six episodes were provided prior to broadcast.

In many ways, Casual, which returns to Hulu for its second season on June 7, is the quintessential modern television show. It’s a comedy void of any real punchlines, straddling genre in a manner that’s sure to baffle Emmy voters. Its talented cast makes the most of characters who are boldly unlikeable without having any real reason to be. And, it celebrates its distance from the traditional network model with all the swearing and foursomes one has come to expect from streaming television. While these factors made Casual a challenge to root for, a shift in focus allows the show to find its footing in season 2 without making any significant changes to its DNA.

Casual’s second season picks up a few months after its first run left off, with our core group trying to reassemble pieces of the relationships they shattered just weeks before. »

Tribeca Review: 'A Kind Of Murder' Starring Patrick Wilson, Jessica Biel, Eddie Marsan And Vincent Kartheiser

24 April 2016 5:30 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

At first glance, this melodramatic noir is a gorgeous period picture, echoing the vintage visuals of Tom Ford’s “A Single Man” and Todd Haynes’ “Far From Heaven” and “Carol.” Given this movie’s origins as a Patricia Highsmith novel like Haynes’ most recent work, that early impression initially seems merited. Unfortunately, as “A Kind of Murder” progresses, it becomes clear that it resembles those films in look only. The fine cinematography, set design and costumes only serve as a distraction from the sparsely drawn story and uninteresting characters. With “Elizabeth Taylor in ‘Butterfield 8’” on a theater marquee and '60s dresses to die for, “A Kind of Murder” immediately establishes its setting in its opening scene, before it dives into parallel storylines. On one side, Newark bookstore owner Kimmel (Eddie Marsan) is grieving the loss of his wife after her murder, and he’s the prime suspect in »
