Mini Biography

Donna Kanter is a writer-producer-director of films based on true stories and events. As owner of The Kanter Company, Inc., she has been Executive Producer of 21 programs on subjects ranging from "Pope John Paul II's Vatican", "The White House: Inside the Gates", to secrets of the circus, the Desilu empire, U.S. Missiles programs, transportation crimes, and numerous police dramas.

In 2004 she wrote and directed the pilot, "Inside The Yellow Line" for Court TV, the story of an elite FBI unit, and her company will produce the series for Court TV's 2005-2006 season. This year, Donna also wrote and directed a second "Cold Case Cops" (aka: Case Reopened: Avenging the Victims"), for the Discovery Channel.

In 2003, Donna was executive producer/writer of her third television movie, "Not in This House", for CBS, and her company produced its fourth season of Badge of Courage for Court TV, with Jerry Orbach, Dennis Franz, and Gordon Clapp each hosting one of the four programs.

A team member that has launched 14 TV series pilots, Donna was creator and producer of the ABC reality-drama hybrid series, "FBI: The Untold Stories" (ABC). She created and wrote the pilot "Payback" (NBC/RTI-Italy), wrote the pilot "Injustice For all" (NBC), and was Supervising Producer/director/writer of the NBC syndicated series, "Save Our Streets" from 1999-2001. Donna directed and wrote the syndicated pilot and series "Strange Universe", directed the pilot, "Rescue, 911" (CBS), and wrote and directed the pilot, "The Crusaders" (Buena Vista).

Kanter grew up in an atmosphere of comedy writers, and gravitated towards investigative reporting, beginning her career in Seattle, then as senior producer for David Brinkley, for Newsweek, as foreign editor for ABC, and investigative producer for CBS. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, Donna completed her M.A. in Romance Languages from the University of Florence, and her doctorate requirements in Italian literature at UCLA. She left graduate studies at Yale University to join Ralph Nader's task force and to begin her career as journalist.

A two-time Emmy winner, Donna Kanter serves on the Writers Guild's Contract Waivers Committee, is a member of the Directors Guild, a founding member of New York Women in Film, and a fellow of the AFI's Directing Workshop for Women.

Donna is governor of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences/ Writer's Peer Group (her father, Hal, is Governor of the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences, Writers' Branch). Donna's Governor Peers recently re-elected her to represent them on ATAS' Executive Committee.
