Joy Reid Gets Weekend Slot on MSNBC

29 April 2016 12:28 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Joy Reid will return to hosting duties on MSNBC when she gets a new weekend perch on the NBCUniversal-owned cable-news outlet.

Reid, who had hosted an hour Monday through Friday for parts of 2014 and 2015, will host a new show that airs between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturday and Sunday on MSNBC. This show fills the time slot formerly held by Melissa Harris Perry, who parted ways with the network in a very public fashion over disagreements about being pre-empted for breaking news.

Reid will tackle the important  topics of the week and tap a rotating panel of journalists to explore how the issues shape the national discourse.  The program will premiere next Saturday, May 7 .

“MSNBC viewers crave not only the facts, but also in-depth discussion and analysis from a range of perspectives,” said MSNBC President Phil Griffin, in a prepared statement.  “There is no one better equipped than Joy to lead this new project, »

MSNBC Gets New Daytime Programming Chief

16 March 2016 6:15 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

A new executive will take the reins of MSNBC’s daytime schedule, which had become increasingly focused on up-to-the-minute headlines.

In a move that further blurs the lines between NBCUniversal’s cable-news operation and its NBC News unit, the company has assigned a senior executive from NBC News to supervise MSNBC programs featuring Andrea Mitchell, Thomas Roberts, Kate Snow – and, of course, special reports from Brian Williams that have become a bigger part of the network’s programming.

Janelle Rodriguez,  an NBC News senior vice president of who rides herd on editorial operations, will now oversee MSNBC daytime programming, and report to both NBC News President Deborah Turness and Phil Griffin, president of MSNBC, who explained the move in a memo to staff issued Wednesday morning.

The New York Post previously reported the executive shift.

MSNBC previously ran a daytime grid that matched the themes of its primetime schedule, in »

By Robert E. Tevis
