Mahmoud was born in Tehran, Iran. After completion of photography courses in United States, he held his first photo show titled visit with people around us at Teharn university in 1976.
In 1979 he was employed by Sigma Photo News Agency ( based in Paris) while visiting New York and worked for them for four years.
In 1980 he was one of the 15 Best Photographers Of The Year by Time magazine and his photos could be seen in French, German and American magazines From1982-1984 he was the supervisor of Tehran National TV Photography Unit, and at the same time teaching Photo- Journalism at Tehran University as a guest professor.
In 1984 he started his career as cinematographer in the movie Frosty
Roads and won the best award in that category at Tehran Film Festival. He
has filmed 65 movies since

And 21 other international film festivals around the world- the winner of Best Cinematography Award at Tehran (Fajr) International Film Festival and Winner of Fuji Film Award for motion picture) 1996 LEILA ( shown at 7 international festivals and the winner of the
best cinematography At Tehran Film Festival) 1997
He directed his first movie called âCloud and The Rising Sunâ which he was also the writer and cinematographer ( shown at Montreal and Chicago Film Festivals and winner of the best film at Argentina Mardel Plata Film Festival 1998
PEAR TREE ( won the silver award at Chicago Film Festival and was chosen the Best
Motion Picture Photography by international jury at Tehran Film Festival) 1998 He was selected as a jury for Poland Film Festival two years in-a-row,1999-2000 In 2001 Nant Festival in Paris held a tribute to his work as a photographer and displayed his photos. In 2005 he won the best cinematography award for the movie Bab Aziz directed By a Tunisian/French director at the Tartarstan Film Festival. Recently a Gallery of his photos taken during Iran revolution was opened to public and his photo book of that era was published- 2008
He has had couple workshops in different cities in Iran in the past few years and one is
coming up in South Korea soon.
