Studied at Cambridge University, and, while there, was a member of the prestigious Cambridge University Footlights Club.

While at Cambridge Revue Club Footlights, he met Douglas Adams, who later cast him as the utterly ordinary Earthman Arthur Dent in his cult classic "The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy" (1981), both in the original 1978 radio series and the 1981 TV mini-series. The two were lifelong friends after college and Jones later spoke at Adams's funeral on 11 May 2001.

Having worked together before, Douglas Adams wrote the role of Arthur Dent specifically with Jones in mind.

He is a first cousin, once removed, of the current James Bond, Daniel Craig.

(September 2004) Returned for the new "Tertiary Phase" episodes of "The Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy" BBC4 radio series, adapted from book 3 of the late Douglas Adams' "Hitch Hiker's Trilogy", "Life, The Universe, and Everything".

(May 2005) Returned for the new "Quandary Phase" episodes of "The Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy" BBC Radio 4 radio series, adapted from book 4 of the late Douglas Adams' "Hitch Hiker's Trilogy", "So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish".

(2005) Had a small role in the film adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005) as the "Ghostly Image" on the planet Magrathea.

(December 2005) Gave a witty, whimsical and hilarious performance as Mr. Micawber, the long-winded but well-intended underachiever in "David Copperfield", at Westport Country Playhouse in Westport, Connecticut.

(June 2007) With Lisa Harrow, co-starred in "Phallacy", a play written by Dr. Carl Djerassi, (known as "Father of the Birth Control Pill"!) at The Cherry Lane Theatre, NY, produced by Redshift Productions, directed by Elena Araoz..(May 18th -June 10th). In the role of "Professor Rex Stoltzfuss", he was described as "excellent" by the New York Times, and as giving "...a commanding performance of sophistication and vigor" by critic 'William Wolf'.

(September 2007) Played lead role of "Christopher Gore" in American Premiere of Brian Friel's latest play, "The Home Place", directed by Joe Dowling at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for a 10-week run.

(May 2005) Returned for the new "Quintessential Phase" episodes of "The Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy" BBC Radio 4 radio series, adapted from the fifth and final book of the late Douglas Adams' "Hitch Hiker's Trilogy", "Mostly Harmless".

(July 2009) In the UK, starring as the title character in "The Adventures of Sexton Blake - Detective!", on BBC Radio 2. The first episode aired on Friday, July 31st and the weekly broadcasts will continue through September 4th.

(August 2009) Currently appearing as 'Windscape" in the Williamstown Theatre Festival (Williamstown, MA) in 'Simon Gray''s "Quartermaine's Terms", directed by Maria Aitken.

(February 2009) Played "Doctor Bradman" in the smash hit Broadway production of Noel Coward's "Blithe Spirit", with Angela Lansbury, Rupert Everett, Jayne Atkinson and Christine Ebersole.
