This week's new films

25 May 2012 4:05 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Moonrise Kingdom (12A)

(Wes Anderson, 2012, Us) Jared Gilman, Kara Hayward, Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Frances McDormand, Bill Murray. 94 mins

Anderson's signature meticulous, deadpan retro-chic works best when it's tethered to something tangibly real, as this is, historically and emotionally. Set on an island microcosm of 1965 America, it details the touching elopement of two precocious but naive pre-teens, and the grown-up chaos and crises their clandestine outdoors adventure provokes. It's a stylised storm in a teacup, packed with visual flourishes, cultural footnotes and the usual dry comedy. But beneath the playfulness are some deceptively mature observations on the pain that comes with both childhood and adulthood.

Men In Black 3 (PG)

(Barry Sonnenfeld, 2012, Us) Will Smith, Josh Brolin, Alice Eve. 106 mins

A time-travel twist facilitates a return to the 1960s and the golden age of conspiracy theories, which goes a long way to justifying a sequel no one was particularly screaming out for. »

What to Expect When You're Expecting – review

Brit director Kirk Jones keeps this on the sunnier, dopier side of offensive, but this is insight-deficient fluff

Someday Hollywood will think of women as more than fallopian tubes in heels; until then, we're stuck with this kind of project. It's based on a self-help bestseller, of course, and set in that bitty, crapestry format Valentine's Day made regrettably profitable. The labour pains extend from white-bread reality celebs Cameron Diaz (right) and Matthew Morrison's disproportionate squabbling about infant circumcision, to an unpersuasively penniless J-Lo's struggles with adopting from Ethiopia. Brit director Kirk Jones (Waking Ned) keeps it on the sunnier, dopier side of offensive, but it's the sort of insight-deficient fluff that thinks the misery of a miscarriage lasts only so long as a sad song, and assumes what women want – beyond babies – are reality show callbacks, a Cheryl Cole cameo and male TV stars with their tops off. »

Photos: Stars Hit The Red Carpet For 'What To Expect' Premiere

23 May 2012 6:21 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

London — The stars of the romantic comedy "What to Expect When You're Expecting" had plenty of praise for each other – and a warning about making out on the hood of a car – during the film's British premiere in London on Tuesday.

Cameron Diaz, Chace Crawford and Matthew Morrison, Anna Kendrick and Rodrigo Santoro were among the actors who walked the red carpet at the British Film Institute's IMAX theater.

The film – inspired by the bestselling book by Heidi Murkoff, and also featuring Jennifer Lopez, Dennis Quaid, Cheryl Cole and Chris Rock – looks at love through the eyes of five interconnected couples as they experience pregnancy and childbirth.

Kendrick and Crawford were one of the couples with some steamy moments in the film. But the reality wasn't quite that great, Kendrick said.

★★★☆☆ What to Expect When You're Expecting (2012), the new multi-tiered, ensemble comedy from British director Kirk Jones, starring - amongst others - Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Dennis Quaid, Chris Rock and Cheryl Cole (!?), is good fun as long as you're not expecting too much. The film follows five couples as they experience the ups and downs of pregnancy and childbirth, in the process learning about themselves whilst dealing with the unforgettable experience of bringing a new life into the world.

What To Expect When You’re Expecting Review

22 May 2012 6:30 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Kirk Jones

Starring: Cameron Diaz, Matthew Morrison, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Dennis Quaid, Chris Rock

Certificate: 12A

Running time: 110 minutes

Synopsis: Five couples prepare for parenthood.  Hilarity ensues.

Not being a man yet blessed with a living, breathing, crying bundle of joy (owing to the fact that it’s difficult to conceive a child with a pillow-girlfriend), perhaps I’m not this film’s target audience. But then again, balls to that logic, because a film should be aimed at – and hope to please – everyone. By that logic, What To Expect When You’Re Expecting fails with a capital F.

Where to start? Essentially the plot boils down to five separate couples preparing to have babies, whilst dealing with various problems surrounding this big step. That wouldn’t be so bad, if 1) The character’s lives weren’t clumsily interconnected, and 2) The characters weren’t so bloody unlikeable. It »

[Review] What to Expect When You’re Expecting

21 May 2012 5:19 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

In their hit song, “Hey Jealousy,” the Gin Blossoms suggest that if “you don’t expect too much from me, you might not get let down.” I admit I approached What to Expect When Your Expecting with that attitude and was pleasantly surprised. A departure from the brainless star-studded ensemble of recent Garry Marshall (Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve), this is not exactly cinematically nutritious but a pleasant-enough cupcake.

The interlocked, primarily Atlanta-based couples the film follows include Wendy (Elizabeth Banks) owner of an upscale baby boutique with husband Gary (Ben Falcone), Gary’s father (Dennis Quaid) and his much younger wife Skyler (Brooklyn Decker), two young food truck-owners Marco (Chace Crawford) and Rosie (Anna Kendrick) the star of a Biggest Loser-type of reality show Jules (Cameron Diaz) and her partner from a Dancing with the Stars-type show Evan (Matthew Morrison), a freelance photographer Holly (Jennifer Lopez »

Brooklyn Decker Box Office: Battleship Tanks, What To Expect Below Expectations

19 May 2012 8:47 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Battleship: Brooklyn Decker, Taylor Kitsch Brooklyn Decker has two box-office disappointments opening on the same weekend: Decker is featured in Battleship and What to Expect When You’re Expecting. Both movies opened way below expectations on Friday; in fact, official studio estimates released Saturday morning have them faring even worse than Friday night estimates indicated. Starring Taylor Kitsch, Peter Berg’s Battleship raked in $9m at 3,650 locations on Friday in the Us/Canada according to Box Office Mojo. That’s about $500k less than early estimates. For comparison’s sake: Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, at the start of its third weekend out, took in an estimated $15.3m. Box-office prognosticators were expecting Battleship to gross $40m on its first weekend out in North America. It turns out the alien invasion actioner / sci-fier will be lucky if it earns much more than $25m. A Universal release, Battleship cost a reported $209m. »

Rodrigo Santoro Talks What To Expect When You’Re Expecting, Love Actually, the 300 Sequel, Possibly Playing Ayrton Senna in a Biopic, and a Lot More

19 May 2012 2:01 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

While not as well known in America as some of his counterparts in What to Expect When You’re Expecting, Rodrigo Santoro is absolutely the bigger star in places like Brazil.  That's because while Santoro has acted in some Hollywood movies and TV shows like Love Actually, 300, I Love You Phillip Morris (which is severely underrated) and Lost (he played Paulo), in Brazil he's acted in countless movies and he's a big time movie star. At the recent Los Angeles press day for What to Expect When You're Expecting (he plays Jennifer Lopez's husband), I landed an extended interview with Santoro.  During our wide ranging conversation we talked about how he got into acting, his favorite movies, how he got cast in What to Expect, the success of Love Actually, and the 300 sequel/spin-off 300: Battle of Artemisia . In addition, Santoro addresses the rumor of him playing famed Brazilian Formula One racer, »

What to Expect When You’re Expecting

19 May 2012 8:32 AM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

What to Expect When You’re Expecting has been treated with a bit of skepticism, and rightfully so. Kirk Jones’s fourth feature film is based on a hugely popular book, has an all-star ensemble cast reminiscent of last year’s floppy New Year’s Eve), and, perhaps most dire, stars Jennifer Lopez. However, J-Lo or no, What to Expect is as hilarious as it claims to be. With a brilliant script that embraces and challenges the philosophies of the original book by Heidi Murkoff, What To Expect serves up an adult-sized sippy cup full of good fun, good drama, and—most importantly—dirty pregnancy jokes. »

Jennifer Lopez/What To Expect, The Dictator: Box Office Duds

19 May 2012 2:57 AM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Jennifer Lopez, What to Expect When You’re Expecting Still going strong, The Avengers is on its third weekend out. Yet, the domestic box office is expected to be down 18% compared to last year because of three weak new entries: Peter Berg / Taylor Kitsch’s megabudgeted Battleship barely managed to stay afloat on Friday, while Sacha Baron Cohen‘s The Dictator (which opened on Wed.) and Kirk Jones’ all-star ensemble (Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Chace Crawford, etc.) What to Expect When You’re Expecting performed below expectations. [See Box Office: Battleship bombs.] The Dictator grossed an estimated $5.5m at 3,008 theaters on Friday, for an expected weekend total of $16m, as per Deadline.com. Sacha Baron Cohen’s R-rated comedy will thus reach a cume of $23m after five days. For comparison’s sake, Bruno — which was considered a major box-office disappointment following Borat — opened with $30.61m on its first weekend out in July 2009. Supporting Baron »

Screen Rant’s Ben Kendrick reviews What to Expect When You’re Expecting

Modern ensemble comedies have seen plenty of success in recent years with edgier offerings like Bridesmaids, Horrible Bosses, and the recent Think Like a Man, presenting plenty of fresh laughs as well as contemporary social satire. Whereas other films have explored the ins and outs of bromance, wedding party fiascoes, and modern relationships in general, director Kirk Jones (Everybody’s Fine) tackled one of life’s most joyful (and painful) subjects with What to Expect When You’re Expecting: pregnancy.

However, with other contemporary “pregnancy” comedies such as Knocked Up and Baby Mama (plus Twilight Breaking Dawn: Part I, however unintentionally) still making viewers laugh on blu-ray and cable syndication, can What ...

In Theaters: 'The Dictator' Overruns The 'Polisse,' So That 'Battleship' And 'What To Expect' May Cause Angry 'Hysteria' Among 'The Samaritan's

Dictators, hitmen, and navy officers – oh my! It’s a big weekend for the dudes, the professional advantages mentioned above notwithstanding, and we can expect screens clogged with manly men doing male things. Even the invention of a sex toy (by a man, duh) and male grooming get sweet turns in the theaters. If only the powerful sight of pregnant women was enough to combat the male-dominated market. Ah well, perhaps another weekend. Let’s jump into the testosterone-fueled fray, shall we?

Political satire, social comedy, and gross-out humor each take their turn in the Larry Charles-directed “The Dictator,” which opened Wednesday. Sacha Baron Cohen is Admiral General Aladeen, the universal and undisputed leader of the fictional North African nation of Wadiya. Running (or perhaps “scaring” is a better word choice here) a nation with a sexist, racist, iron fist, threatening nuclear warfare while hoarding oil reserves, Aladeen is »

Anna Kendrick Talks What To Expect When You’Re Expecting, Get A Job, End Of Watch, and Her Desire to Play More Stoners

Opening this weekend is director Kirk Jones’ What to Expect When You’re Expecting. The star-studded ensemble comedy tells the intertwining story of five couples that are having very different experiences while expecting babies.  The cast also includes Anna Kendrick, Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid, Jennifer Lopez, Rodrigo Santoro, Joe Manganiello, Chace Crawford, Matthew Morrison, Brooklyn Decker, Thomas Lennon, and Wendy McLendon-Covey.  For more on the film, here’s the trailer and a TV spot. At the recent Los Angeles press day I was able to speak with Anna Kendrick twice.  The first time was a video interview alongside Chace Crawford (click here if you missed it), and the second time was a more in depth interview with just her.  During our wide ranging conversation we talked about what she collects, how she made seven movies last year, what it was like to film What to Expect When You're Expecting with such a huge cast, »

Film Review: Boredom Awaits During ‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting’ with Cameron Diaz

18 May 2012 9:16 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “Battleship” is getting a lot of flack this week for having little to do with its alleged source. I would argue that the awful “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” is even more dishonest when it comes to its inspiration. Working from an instructional book that’s designed to prepare adults for impending parenthood, the film that steals its title turns truth into cliché. There’s little that feels real or honest in this greatest hits parade of stereotypes about pregnancy and the attempt to disguise it in manipulative sentimentality makes it all the more nauseating.

Rating: 1.0/5.0

Much like Garry Marshall’s “Valentine’s Day” and “New Year’s Eve,” Kirk Jones’ comedy tells multiple barely interconnected stories centered around how ridiculous, stupid, and annoying Hollywood thinks that grown men and women become when they’re expecting the birth of a child. Honestly, you could talk to any »

Video: Jennifer Lopez On Toning Down Affection With Rodrigo Santoro

In this video  interview, Jennifer Lopez revealed the What To Expect When you're Expecting director Kirk Jones told Jlo and Rodrigo Santoro to tone down the Pda session for an affectionate scene between the two Latino lovers.

The "very English" director, according to la JLo instructed the actress and her on-screen husband to cool things down in the sexy scene. "Stop touching each other," the director kept telling the movie couple. "I don't think you guys have to hug and

What to Expect When You’re Expecting

Directed by: Kirk Jones

Cast: Elizabeth Banks, Ben Falcone, Jennifer Lopez, Rodrigo Santoro, Cameron Diaz, Matthew Morrison, Anna Kendrick, Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, Dennis Quaid

Running Time: 1 hr 50 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: May 18, 2012

Plot: The intersecting lives of five couples and their different experiences with pregnancy.

Who’S It For?: Women (and dudes just like Schwarzenegger’s character in Junior) won’t find this flick to be all that plentiful with pregnancy wisdom. Though there are jokes specifically targeted at the testosterone in theater, those aren’t funny either. While I’ve never been pregnant, I can say that this movie would probably make my mom (who has actually had nine-pound twins) want to crush someone in the face with this book.

Expectations: Hee-haw, not falling for that one. However, I was curious to see how well this self-help book would transition into a movie, »

'Battleship,' 'The Dictator,' And More: Double Feature Friday

18 May 2012 6:50 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

In honor of two separate Brooklyn Decker films hitting theaters this weekend, we have recommended only movies that don't feature Brooklyn Decker, so sorry fans of "Just Go With It."

Check out this week's Double Feature Friday!

"Battleship" & "Friday Night Lights"

There was a time, not so long ago, when Peter Berg, instead of directing films "From the Makers of Transformers," could make a movie like this adaptation of the book by Buzz Bissinger. In the years since it's release, against all odds, the TV series that spun off from "Friday Night Lights" eclipsed the original thanks to delightful turns by Kyle Chandler and "Battleship" star Taylor Kitsch. The 2004 starring Billy Bob Thornton and the future Mrs. Taylor, Connie Britton, delivers on all the same honest notes that made the series such a wonderful show but does so in a slightly darker shade of Panther blue. Then again, if you just want a Kitsch fix, »

Review: Silly, Sanitized ‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting’ Is Less Painful Than Childbirth

17 May 2012 2:00 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Pregnancy and childbirth are nothing new. In fact, there are few things less new than humans reproducing. It’s been done before. But Kirk Jones’ What to Expect When You’re Expecting accurately captures the inherent selfishness of expecting parents, and their individual “journeys” to the delivery room (and beyond). Unfortunately, even when gifted with a large, mostly eager cast, Jones is also saddled with a script from Shauna Cross and Heather Hach (working off of Heidi Murkoff‘s guidebook of the same name) that is deeply uninterested in providing much variety in their work. The effect is simple one – the film itself is deeply uninteresting. While What to Expect continually reminds its viewers that pregnancy and childbirth are miracles, unique and thrilling gifts, Cross and Hach have concocted one of the most bland, basic, and unadventurous scripts in recent memory. Like Garry Marshall’s rancid multi-story romantic comedies, Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve »
