The Best of the Best Movies of the Year!

30 December 2011 12:09 PM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

By Scott Mendelson

HollywoodNews.com: This time, it’s the best of the best. Of course ‘best’ is a subjective term, so you might want to consider these my ‘favorites’. Despite what everyone likes to whine about at the end of every year, 2011 was in fact one of the better years in a good long time. Maybe it was the effects of the 2007 WGA strike wearing off, maybe it was just dumb luck, but on the whole, movies, especially mainstream movies, were pretty on-spot more often than they weren’t. But just as important, most of the year-end Oscar bait was actually quite good, so this is a year where I don’t have to half-heartedly apologize for having a list filled with movies nobody saw and mainstream pictures that no one admits to liking. Even if it took 1/3 of the year to really get cooking, 2011 was an uncommonly solid »

Vin Diesel staying Fast and Furious with seventh film

30 December 2011 12:07 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Hollywood loves a franchise and this year we've seen studios stretching sagas - and doubling the box office - by separating films into two parts, as happened with the conclusions of Twilight and Harry Potter and as will also be the case with The Hobbit.

Although a fairly unlikely contender for big-screen longevity - because of its seemingly simple road-racing concept and lack of a cherished literary source - The Fast And The Furious series is now extending itself even further.

We knew a sixth film was scheduled to arrive on May 27, 2013, and Vin Diesel says the story has become so big that they have decided to split it into a sixth and seventh instalment.

The 44-year-old actor, who stars as Dominic Toretto in the franchise about men with a passion for super-cars, told The Hollywood Reporter: "With the success of this last one, and the inclusion of so many characters, »

'Fast Five' is the most pirated movie of 2011

26 December 2011 10:17 AM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

"Fast Five" will probably not be at the top of many year-end movie lists -- best, worst, biggest hits or otherwise. But it is No. 1 somewhere, although probably not where its studio, Universal, would want it to be.

The movie was the most pirated film of 2011, according to data compiled by TorrentFreak. The Vin Diesel-Paul Walker-Dwayne Johnson action saga was swapped almost 9.3 million times via BitTorrent.

That's a lot, but it's way down from 2010 piracy leader "Avatar," which racked up more than 16 million downloads. TorrentFreak says the average for the Top 10 this year was also way down from 2010, although the number of BitTorrent users didn't decline.

"The Hangover Part II" and "Thor" were second and third on the list, each with more than 8 million downloads.

Best picture winner "The King's Speech" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" also made the Top 10, but it wasn't all hits. »

Vin Diesel Ready for 'Fast & Furious' Six… and Seven

21 December 2011 8:57 AM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

In the true spirit of the franchise, star Vin Diesel has confirmed that a seventh "Fast & Furious" is already in the works—even though shooting the sixth hasn't started yet. (According to the action hero, the story is just "too massive" to be corralled into a single movie.)

Diesel explains that the scripts are being written simultaneously (which is a pretty tall order if you ask us, but we digress). No word yet on whether they will shoot the installments back-to-back or if the cast and crew will get a little break in between. But, let's be honest, this franchise isn't really about taking things slow.

Why the rush? It's really a matter of housekeeping. "With the success of the last one, and the inclusion of so many characters, and the broadening of scope, when we were sitting down to figure out what would fit into the real estate of number six, »

Vin Diesel Confirms Back-To-Back 'Fast Six' And 'Fast Seven'

Plenty of movies are split into two in order to give the story more room to breathe. "The Hobbit." "Twilight: Breaking Dawn." "Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows." Why can't the "Fast and Furious" franchise join all the fun?

Vin Diesel, star of the franchise and one of its producers, announced that upon planning the sixth "Fast and Furious" film, the team realized that they would prefer a seventh movie to wrap up every storyline.

"With the success of this last one, and the inclusion of so many characters, and the broadening of scope, when we were sitting down to figure out what would fit into the real estate of number six, we didn’t have enough space," he told The Hollywood Reporter. The sixth and seventh movies will be written simultaneously, though he gave no details on a possible production schedule.

Vin Diesel Reveals Fast And Furious 7 Plans

21 December 2011 4:01 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Vin Diesel is set to rev his The Fast And The Furious franchise up to seven films after revealing scriptwriters are working on two sequels to Fast Five.

The action man and his co-stars Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson struck gold with the fifth installment, which raked in $626 million (£391 million) at the box office earlier this year.

Director Justin Lin subsequently revealed plans for a sixth movie, and now Vin Diesel has told The Hollywood Reporter that writers are also working on a seventh film.

He says, "With the success of this last one, and the inclusion of so many characters, and the broadening of scope, when we were sitting down to figure out what would fit into the real estate of number six, we didn't have enough space.

"We have to pay off this story, we have to service all of these character relationships, and when we started mapping all that out it just went beyond 110 pages. The studio said, 'You can't fit all that story in one damn movie!'" »
