Top 10 sleeper movie hits of the decade

28 December 2009 6:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Sleepers come seemingly out of nowhere. They are the little films that confound expectations, attracting enthusiastic audiences that happily spread the word. Sometimes they come from the studio system, produced almost as an afterthought, but mostly they're produced well off the radar. On occasion, they upend the established order by opening at No. 1 at the boxoffice. But more typically they start small, building over time, hanging on in theaters as more heralded movies come and go. Often the filmmakers involved meet with initial rejection before wildly triumphing in the end. And in the process, they expose the limitations of Hollywood's conventional thinking about what makes a hit. Sleepers, when everyone wakes up to their potential, tend to be wildly successful, resulting in boxoffice returns that dwarf their modest budgets. And so, top sleepers of the past decade, take another bow.

10. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (Sony Pictures Classics, 2000)

Budget: $17 million

Hollywood to Continue Sending 3D at You

23 December 2009 1:38 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

With the expected success of James Cameron’s Avatar, a 3-Dimensional craze has begun to sweep Hollywood according to Waxword columnist Sharon Waxman over at The Wrap. Although filming completed some time ago and despite a trailer already online, director Ridley Scott is apparently seeking approval from Universal executives to create a 3D version to his $200 million Robin Hood reimagining. A deal is currently in the works with Studio Canal-the studio that owns the rights to Cameron’s legendary “Terminator 2″-to fast track a screen-popping version of the film.

Hit the jump for more directors looking to send audience’s eyes into a frenzy.

In a move that surprises pretty much no one, George Lucas is pondering the possibility of a 3D version to Star Wars. Meanwhile, the director’s good buddy Steven Spielberg reportedly called Avatar the best film he’s ever seen, so don’t be surprised »

Johnny Knoxville's Latest Stunt—Father of Two

23 December 2009 12:20 PM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

A round of applause for Philip John Clapp. Aka Johnny Knoxville, who welcomed a son over the weekend, his first child with girlfriend Naomi Nelson. Rocko Akira Clapp (sure, why not?) was born Sunday, weighing 8 pounds and measuring 20 inches, per the L.A. Times. Knoxville is also dad to a 13-year-old daughter, Madison, with ex-wife Melanie. The two divorced last year. The Jackass star has been lying relatively low (i.e., not barreling headfirst into cinder blocks, or whatnot) since Lax security found a prop grenade in his luggage in January. Lately, he's been executive-producing and appearing occasionally on the MTV2 show Nitro Circus. »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Five

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

Jackass 3D

21 December 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

All I can say is oh dear I am not sure I want to watch Jackass in 3D. The third installment of Jackass from Paramount Pictures and MTV Films will hit theaters on October 15, 2010, this time in eye-popping 3D. Johnny Knoxville and the boys will begin shooting in late January with Dickhouse Production’s Jeff Tremaine at the helm and producing alongside Spike Jonze and Knoxville.

The addition of 3D to the new film will raise the mayhem factor to new heights, promises star/producer Johnny Knoxville.  “We're going to take the same 3D technology James Cameron used in Avatar and stick it up Steve O's butt. We're taking stupid to a whole new dimension.”

2002’s “Jackass: The Movie” earned more than more than $64 million and was heralded as “a disgusting, repulsive, grotesque spectacle, but also hilarious and provocative. God help me, thumbs up” by esteemed critic Richard Roeper. »

Third Jackass Movie Will Be In 3D

21 December 2009 3:08 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

Paramount Pictures has announced that the third installment of Jackass will be released on October 15, 2010 in eye-popping 3D.

Johnny Knoxville and the boys will begin shooting in late January with Dickhouse Production's Jeff Tremaine at the helm and producing alongside Spike Jonze and Knoxville.

Knoxville promises the addition of 3D will raise the mayhem and ickness factor traditionally associated with Jackass to brand new heights: "We're going to take the same 3D technology James Cameron used in Avatar and stick it up Steve O's butt. We're taking stupid to a whole new dimension."

2002's Jackass: The Movie earned more than $64 million and its sequel, Jackass: Number Two, in 2006 grossed more than $72 million, so those in charge are undoubtedly hoping the third installment will follow suit and top its predecessor once again.

Jackass 3-D Will Take You to Places You Never Wanted to Go

20 December 2009 1:10 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Earlier this month we not only got confirmation that a new third installment of MTV's off-the-wall series Jackass was in the works, but that it would also be presented in 3-D adding a whole new nasty level of gross. Johnny Knoxville and the guys promise a return to complete chaos and mayhem to really make the 3-D worth your while, but it's exactly where they intend to use the technology that is, shall we say, cheeky. Knoxville explains: "We're going to take the same 3-D technology James Cameron used in Avatar and stick it up Steve-o's butt. We're talking stupid to a whole new dimension." Spoken like a true cinematic pioneer. Of course the first two installments of the gross-out stunt series were quite successful (earning $64 million and $72 million respectively). They even got some approval from Richard Roeper who called the first flick, "a disgusting, repulsive, grotesque spectacle but »
