Seven days on stage: 1 million viewers could bring the Olivier awards back to terrestrial TV

25 May 2012 7:32 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Viewing figures for the Oliviers could prompt terrestrial pickup, the Met rescinds a ban on its own magazine, the Royal Court scores a hat-trick and Piff the dragon may have a doppelgänger

On the button

Nearly a million people watched the 2012 Olivier awards, according to figures released by the event's organisers. The results – which show that just shy of 700,000 watched a highlights package on the BBC's red button, while a further 180,000 watched the event broadcast live – will lend weight to calls from the theatre community for the ceremony to be returned to mainstream TV. It hasn't featured on a terrestrial channel since 2003, when the Oliviers were screened on BBC2. "Extensive conversations" are said to be ongoing with the Beeb over plans for next year's event. You never know.

Penn Jillette's Obama Marijuana Blast (Video)

21 May 2012 12:04 PM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

"Celebrity Apprentice" star and performer Penn Jillette isn't thrilled with President Obama's stance on marijuana laws. During "Penn's Sunday School," Jillette, a tea totaler, lambasted the Obama drug policies that seek to criminalize the buying and selling of medical marijuana."Now, he has not left this to states' rights," Jillette said. "As you know, medical marijuana you can get in California, and the feds are coming in to try to stop this. States' rights don't mean jack sh*t to the Obama administration on anything except gay marriage." Penn says, "I think it's beyond hypocrisy. I think it's something to do with class. A lot of people have accused Obama of class warfare, but in the wrong direction. I believe this »

'Celebrity Apprentice': Arsenio Hall on Clay Aiken's comedic talents and a return to late-night TV

21 May 2012 11:17 AM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Time started moving in slow motion for Arsenio Hall when Donald Trump named him the winner of "The Celebrity Apprentice" on NBC Sunday (May 20) night, but the win and publicity surrounding the show could potentially put his return to show business on the fast track.

Arsenio tells Zap2it Monday that his business manager has been on the phone all morning following the former late-night host's big win.

"And I hope it's more than Walgreens," Arsenio jokes, referring to one of the show's featured sponsors during the season.

Arsenio beat out fellow finalist and "American Idol" runner-up Clay Aiken, but there's no bad blood between these two, who dueted on a performance of "Lean On Me" during the live finale. But what about between Arsenio and Aubrey O'Day, with whom he famously had a falling out during the season?

Jillette: If Obama Were Arrested Under His Laws, He'd Be In Prison

21 May 2012 8:02 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

In a recent episode of his podcast "Penn's Sunday School," comedian Penn Jillette laid his opinions on the Obama drug policies out on the table.

Jillette, who has never done drugs or drank alcohol in his life, expressed particular concern over the policies' broad-sweeping, all-inclusive nature. Namely, that people are going to prison because of marijuana use.

"Now, he has not left this to states' rights," Jillette posited. "As you know, medical marijuana... you can get in California, and the feds are coming in to try to stop this. States' rights don't mean jack sh*t to the Obama administration on anything except gay marriage."

Another point of contention for Jillette was the fact that President Obama mentioned that he had smoked "weed" and done "maybe a little blow" in his 1995 book "Dreams from my Father."

Jillette cited it as a prime example of the fact that not all drug »

The comedian and the crooner - Arsenio Hall and Clay Aiken - squared off for the title of Celebrity Apprentice on Sunday night, seeking to be Donald Trump's latest favored protégé. The task at hand was to create a celebrity variety show and a 30-second public-service announcement for their respective charities. In a close race, Hall, 56, ended up winning after producing a comedy show with his team of Adam Corolla, Lisa Lampanelli, Paul Teutel Sr. and Teresa Giudice. Aiken, 33, chose a carnival theme with his team of Penn Jillette, Debbie Gibson, Dee Snider and Aubrey O'Day. Aiken raised »

'Celebrity Apprentice': Aubrey O'Day's blond again and Dayana Mendoza has no love for Lisa Lampanelli

During the two-hour live finale for "The Celebrity Apprentice" on NBC Sunday (May 20) night, Donald Trump welcomed the previously fired contestants to the stage (minus Cheryl Tiegs and Michael Andretti, though his dad, Mario Andretti, did drive Donald Trump to the live show) -- including Victoria Gotti, George Takei, Tia Carrere, Patricia Velasquez, Lou Ferrigno, Dayana Mendoza, Aubrey O'Day, Lisa Lampanelli, Teresa Giudice, Dee Snider, Penn Jillette, Lisa Lampanelli, Debbie Gibson and Adam Carolla.

Find out who won "The Celebrity Apprentice."

Here are a few things we learned:

- Lou had surgery for his hearing impairment. "For the first time in my life I can hear without a hearing aid," he tells Donald.

- Dayana has nothing positive to say about Lisa, but Lisa thinks Dayana's crying impersonation of her was hilarious. "I think she's great," Lisa says about Dayana. "I love being made fun of. I dish it out and I can take it. »

Extended Thoughts on ‘Fantasia 2000′

Fantasia 2000

Directed by Don Hahn, Pixote Hunt, Hendel Butoy, Eric Goldberg, James Algar, Francis Glebas, and Paul and Gaetan Brazzi

Starring Steve Martin, Bette Midler, Penn and Teller, Angela Lansbury

Achieving balance is one of the great high-wire acts of family films. Some filmmakers attempt to make universal pieces of entertainment, to appeal to adults as well as to children. Many don’t, but the best of the films from Walt Disney Pictures succeed at that balance, or at least try very hard and come close to succeeding. The most obvious example of a group of people trying to make something as accessible for kids as it is for adults, something that everyone can enjoy on some level, are the two (as of now) Fantasia films. Both movies work within the medium of animation to transcend commonly considered tropes of storytelling. But the people behind both films went about »

'Celebrity Apprentice': Clay Aiken and Arsenio Hall face off after Aubrey O'Day eliminated

13 May 2012 9:59 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

As one of the two finalists on Sunday's (May 13) "The Celebrity Apprentice," Clay Aiken is having deja vu, but he says, "this time, I ain't gonna lose." The "American Idol" runner-up is going head-to-head with former late-night host Arsenio Hall as they compete to be crowned Donald Trump's latest "Celebrity Apprentice," and Clay seems determined to win. But with Lisa Lampanelli, Adam Carolla, Paul Teutul Sr. and Teresa Giudice backing up Arsenio, can Clay take him?

Maybe, especially since it looks like one of Arsenio's own team members, Lisa, has sort of defected -- she calls Clay up during the task to tell him she'll be donating a check to his charity. To be fair, though, it seems like she's giving a chunk of change to Arsenio's charity as well. Clay's not floundering out there all alone, though, as he has a strong team of former celeb-testants helping him out too, »

'Celebrity Apprentice': Lisa Lampanelli and Aubrey O'Day 'an odd couple but a good couple'

7 May 2012 11:20 AM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Comedian Lisa Lampanelli and "Real Housewives of New Jersey" star Teresa Giudice both got the axe on "The Celebrity Apprentice" Sunday (May 6), leaving Arsenio Hall, Clay Aiken and Lisa's right-hand girl, Aubrey O'Day, to battle it out for the final two spots. And Lisa, for one, says she was expecting to be fired.

"I'm not gonna lie to you, I saw it coming," Lisa tells Zap2it. "The relief I think showed in my face. ... I can go home, take off my Spanx and let it all hang out."

Known for abrasive comedic roasts of celebrities like Donald Trump, Lisa showed a surprisingly sensitive side on "Celebrity Apprentice." But as previously eliminated contestant Penn Jillette pointed out, comedians can actually be a pretty delicate lot. And it proved to be the nail in the coffin for Lisa, as past "Celebrity Apprentice" winner John Rich and runner-up Marlee Matlin suggested Lisa »

'Celebrity Apprentice': Penn Jillette 'wins' $250,000 for charity from Caesars

Despite hearing Donald Trump's parting phrase on Sunday's (April 23) episode of "The Celebrity Apprentice," Penn Jillette still managed to win more than $250,000 -- the full amount awarded to the ultimate show winner's charity -- for Opportunity Village, a nonprofit serving people with intellectual disabilities, but the big check wasn't from Trump. It was from Penn's "real boss," Caesars Palace.

"They called up, and they said, 'You really care about Opportunity Village, don't you?'" Penn tells Zap2it. The Las Vegas hotel and casino, which owns the Rio where Penn & Teller perform, then wrote a check for $250,000 to be given to the organization well in advance of "The Celebrity Apprentice" May finale. Penn had previously won $40,000 for his charity as the project manager during a task to create a show for Medieval Times.

"I'm thrilled to pieces," Penn says. "So we'll have the live finale, but I will have »

Penn Jillette: 'Celebrity Apprentice' Drama Isn't Scripted

23 April 2012 11:46 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

The morning after he was fired from "The Celebrity Apprentice," Penn Jillette stopped by "The Wendy Williams Show" (weekdays on Fox) to provide some post-game analysis on his stint on Donald Trump's reality show.

Jillette insisted that the perpetual drama the show displays isn't scripted at all. And he provided a great explanation as to why it's not necessary for the show to write in fictional conflict. "One of the big shocks of 'Celebrity Apprentice' is how straightforward and honest it is. When you have narcissistic, uneducated, unpleasant, two-bit celebrities stuck in a room, you don't have to cheat with us, we will be unpleasant!" he explained.

The Las Vegas magician then demonstrated a trick where he swallowed a Tic-Tac sized plastic object and passed it through his nasal passage and up through his eye socket, where he retrieved it by pushing on the skin under his eye. »

Sunday night's episode of Celebrity Apprentice was a giant advertorial for sponsor Macy's which tasked the two groups to come up with an in-store push for Trump's new fragrance, Success. What does Success smell like? Crisp dollar bills, new car smell and notes of tuberose and a whiff of Trump grovelling. The winner of this challenge would get for $20,000 for their charity, .but if you do something I love, I.m gonna increase it to $100,000,. Trump said. Aubrey O'Day was project manager of her team Arsenio Hall and Terese Giudice. Clay Aiken was project manager with repeat bottom contestant Dayana Mendoza, Penn Jillette and Lisa Lampanelli. 'The Celebrity Apprentice': Sex And The Smell Of Success

23 April 2012 1:19 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Sex and Success were the themes of the week on the latest installment of "The Celebrity Apprentice" (Sun., 9 p.m. Et on NBC). The challenge was to come up with a marketing campaign for Donald Trump's new fragrance, Success.

Aubrey O'Day certainly got Arsenio Hall's attention with her unorthodox suggestion, while Clay Aiken found himself distracted by a male model. While there was far less drama and fighting on this episode, it was replaced with plenty of sexual content and innuendos. But was it exciting?

Clay Aiken and O'Day were the project managers, and Donald Trump found himself unable to declare an obvious winner, so he awarded both of them. Ultimately, he broke it down to the slogan, and found Penn Jillette's slogan the most lacking, and therefore Jillette was the celebrity given the boot this time around.

'Celebrity Apprentice': Penn Jillette doesn't smell like Success

22 April 2012 9:22 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Sunday's (April 22) episode of "The Celebrity Apprentice" is all about the smell of Success by Trump, taskmaster Donald Trump's new fragrance. Otherwise, it's business as usual: more drama between Aubrey O'Day and Arsenio Hall, Aubrey being accused of being self-centered and bossy and adamantly refuting it, Dayana Mendoza being brought back into the boardroom for potential firing and Trump defending her to the bitter end. Penn Jillette is ultimately the one to hear Trump's famous parting words, "You're fired," for coming up with his team's fragrance slogan: "You deserve it." But did he deserve to be fired for it?

Aubrey volunteers to be project manager of her three-person team, leading Arsenio and Teresa Giudice to victory in the end -- a win for which Aubrey feels ultimately responsible, telling everyone she single-handedly came up with a fantastic slogan -- "Trust your instincts" (after which Arsenio found a similar quote »

Clay Aiken lost the Celebrity Apprentice 2012 challenge as a team manager but he was not fired. Penn Jillette of Penn and Teller got the axe instead. Donald Trump fired him (alas). Right now, the person who looks like the best fit to become the next Celebrity Apprentice hire is Arsenio Hall -- but only because Clay Aiken seems to struggle with being a project manager and the former talk show host doesn't. Teresa Giudice is simply not decisive enough to be the ultimate winner, Lisa Lampanelli is not personable or professional in the way she treats other people, and Dayana Mendoza is naturally handicapped by her appearance.
