Tobias Menzies deserves a goodbye Emmy nomination for Best Drama Guest Actor for his last season of “Outlander.” Last fall Menzies ended his three-year run in the time-travel romance, in which he played dual roles as 18th century antagonist Black Jack and his 20th century descendant Frank Randall, the first husband of Claire (Caitriona Balfe). And the timing for Menzies could be just right since it was recently announced that he will be taking over the role of Prince Philip on “The Crown” from Matt Smith in its upcoming third season.
If you’re not familiar with Menzies by name you probably recognize his face as the character actor has worked in a number of award-winning shows. He’s appeared in the dramas “Rome” and “Game of Thrones” as well as longform programs “Black Mirror,” “The Honorable Woman” and “The Night Manager.” Menzies can also bring the funny as he...

“Just fucking stonewall them. Nothing!”
These were the words of encouragement that “Westworld” executive producer Jonathan Nolan issued to co-showrunner Lisa Joy on stage Saturday night at the show’s PaleyFest panel, as the duo fought off a wide array of questions about Season 2. While he maintained the Nolan family mandate of secrecy at all costs, Joy was tempted time and time again to reveal show secrets — but to no avail.
“We’re writing right now, and we’re terribly excited about what we’re writing,” Nolan said, noting they would have all the episodes written before shooting begins. “Reddit has already figured it out. So, the third episode twist, we’re changing that.”
During the panel (which also featured executive producer Roberto Patino, and cast members Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Ed Harris, Thandie Newton, and Jimmi Simpson), the creators and cast were peppered with questions about suspicions connected to Season 1 — Dr.

The IndieWire TV team has already narrowed down their favorite episodes of 2016, but now they’re sharing their favorite TV quotes of the year. Using the hashtag #BestTVLines2016, television critics like New York Times’ James Poniewozick, Variety’s Maureen Ryan and Uproxx’s Alan Sepinwall, among others, tweeted their favorite phrases from some of the best series out there. It’s an annual tradition started by Ryan and Co., but the entire Twitter community is encouraged to participate and share, creating a joyous celebration of the best small moments from the year of television.
Some of the notable shows that they chose bites from include “Billions,” “Veep,” “The Americans,” “BoJack Horseman,” and more. Among our favorites is IndieWire’s Michael Schneider’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” quote (we’re not biased, we promise): “F*ck you, 2016. F*ck. You,” which pretty much sums up the year.

Critics seem to agree: Netflix’s “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” is a successful reboot, although it has its flaws. Entertainment Weekly’s Jeff Jensen wrote that the four-part revival is a “better, bolder, more fulfilling capper to a beloved series that finished just-okay back in 2007,” while IndieWire’s Ben Traver’s described the series as “clearly made with love.” “Holy hell, does it ever deliver,” wrote TV Line’s Michael Ausiello. “BrainDead” is a new comedic political thriller from “The Good Wife” creators, Robert and Michelle King, that premiered on Monday, June 13. The series follows Laurel Healy (Mary Elizabeth WInstead), a young fresh-faced Hill staffer who gets her first job in Washington D.C. and discovers that aliens have spawned on Earth and are feeding on the brains of Congressmen and other federal employees. After its debut, it looks as if critics are 50/50 on the new CBS series.
Maureen Ryan from Variety writes, “‘BrainDead’ doesn’t lack braiiins, exactly — it lacks a spine. The frustrating thing about this comedic drama is that it takes a breezy ‘a pox on both their houses’ approach to telling its story….[but] takes no position at all regarding who’s right and wrong about anything.” She also explains how the show feels “dated” and “bland and incomplete.”

The Hollywood Reporter’s Daniel Fienberg’s bottom line was, “More ‘InspirationDead’ than ‘BrainDead.’” The critic wasn’t a fan of the show writing, “There are enough likable actors and easily digestible bipartisan political jabs here for occasional amusement, but it’s sometimes exhausting to watch a show trying this hard for such limited returns.” Adding that it is “a show that suffers from a lack of creativity and inspiration.”
“The satire is as thin as Donald Trump’s skin. And the pilot commits the sin of a wimpy climax,” describes Entertainment Weekly’s Jeff Jensen giving it an overall score of B. “It ends on a major reversal of fortune and an ominous development, but neither land with much force. I wasn’t left super-confident that the Kings have enough imagination to sustain this enterprise. But I liked it enough to find out. The cast is spunky and appealing, the writing is witty, the tone is light, the brain poop thing made me laugh.”

On the other hand, Michael E. Ross of The Wrap seemed like he was pleased by the show’s concept, calling it a “promisingly original, a deft combination of the tropes of a horror movie, the pace of a forensic drama and the barbs of a political satire that’s thoroughly of the moment.” He adds that fans of the Kings’s will be in for a treat, “With our presumptively surreal political campaign underway, it takes a real stroke of genius — or madness, or a little of both — to come up with a fresh view of the circus of our national politics.”
“BrainDead” airs Mondays at 10pm on CBS.

Fans are still laughing their heads off at Fred Armisen's new "Saturday Night Live" sketch, "Farewell, Mr. Bunting," which was declared an "instant classic."

But millions of viewers still watch live on Saturday night, and that was the best way to see this "Dead Poets Society" spoof, because the live reactions from the studio audience and Twitter were priceless.

This might be the most bonkers fan-made trailer I've ever seen. YouTuber Aldo Jones has taken the trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and remixed and distorted it to such a degree that it's as if you're watching a funhouse version of the movie. Absolutely nothing you'll see here makes any sense whatsoever, and it's both hilarious and a little disconcerting.
Yes, that is Danny Trejo's face on Gal Gadot's body. Yes, Batman is reading a newspaper when facing off against Doomsday. Yes, Superman's face is painted like Mickey Mouse for some reason. Why? Enter this looney bin version of Zack Snyder's universe below, and maybe your consciousness will open to a new level where you'll be able to comprehend this insanity.

Director Brad Bird and his co-writer Damon Lindelof take on a daring, ambitious science fiction project: chosen 'dreamers' are given glimpses of a gleaming Future City on the Horizon that exists in a parallel dimension of possibility. The three-year run of Hannibal, one of the most visually and narratively innovative series ever to air on television, broadcast or cable, came to a breathtaking conclusion Saturday night. I have already confessed to a bit of selfish melancholy that there will be no more surprises, no more opportunities to get lost in the show’s radical approach to reimagining Thomas Harris’s well-known and well-trodden scenarios, and no more sweet, agonized anticipation over what form the show, probably the most envelope-pushing of any network show ever aired, might take in its own becoming. But I must also confess that I couldn’t be more satisfied with the way Hannibal, all three seasons now fully unveiled, was orchestrated to a beautifully modulated finish that illustrated the truly expressive and even transcendent (of the limitations of a more audience-friendly, more comfortingly linear structure and tone) achievement of Bryan Fuller’s series.

Critics have not been shy in their praise of SundanceTV’s Rectify. The Huffington Post’s Maureen Ryan and Entertainment Weekly’s Jeff Jensen placed it among their top dramas of 2014, while in his review of season two last summer, Vulture’s Matt Zoller Seitz called it “the most subtle and quiet drama on TV.” And yet, despite the enormous acclaim, the linear audience for Rectify remains minuscule: On average, just 308,000 viewers made the show a weekly habit last season (and that’s including a week’s worth of DVR replays). While it’s unlikely Rectify is ever going to turn into a massive hit, Sundance execs believe there’s still plenty of Nielsen upside — and they’re planning an all-out push to get more people onboard. The key to the campaign: much bigger sister network AMC.One of the biggest challenges for Rectify has had nothing to do with the show itself.

I want to believe in Tomorrowland.
Like The Iron Giant and The Incredibles before it, Brad Bird’s latest is a thrilling, original adventure that really wants to make you feel something. It’s a non-sequel, non-superhero affair, powered by old-fashioned sentiments of optimism and hope, whole-heartedly committed to feeding the creative souls of idealistic youngsters in the audience. In a cinematic climate saturated with dystopian gloom and superhero fantasy, the film’s earnest message – that ordinary people can ensure the future of their dreams by fighting for it – is welcome.
What’s less welcome is all the claptrap surrounding Tomorrowland‘s vintage Disney core. As written by Bird, Lost‘s Damon Lindelof and Entertainment Weekly TV critic Jeff Jensen, it’s a movie that tries to run with some admirably big ideas but ends up tripping over its own feet, hobbled by tin-eared dialogue and a third-act shift from ebullient positivity to sanctimonious finger-wagging.

Netflix might've kicked off the streaming revolution years ago with House of Cards, but right now, all eyes are on Amazon. Transparent, an original series available through Prime Instant Video, took home a Golden Globe for best comedy last weekend—and on Tuesday, the retailer/studio announced a deal with Woody Allen, who will make his first foray into television with a Prime Instant Video pilot next year. It's the first time that Amazon has given a showrunner a full season commitment without letting the public vote on whether or not the pilot should be picked up for a full season.

EW TV critics Jeff Jensen and Melissa Maerz agree on a lot of things—that Transparent, Rectify, and Fargo were the best TV series of the year, that The Mysteries of Laura is one of the worst. One thing they can't settle on? HBO's Emmy-winning anthology series True Detective—and specifically, whether its first season was a captivating masterpiece or an overhyped disappointment. See their brief arguments for and against the show below—then choose a side in our poll.

Jeff Jensen offers an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at potential Oscar kingpin "Interstellar." Directed by Christopher Nolan, the sci-fi epic opens on November starring recent Academy Award winners Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway across the universe to try and "find salvation for the human race." The epic is timed at two hours, 47 minutes and is compared more to the serious-minded "2001: A Space Odyssey" than the escapist "Star Wars." Nolan says, "We are at an interesting moment where science realizes it has to begin addressing abstractions and human elements, and I wanted to get that in the film. It also speaks to the heart of the movie and the dilemma facing our characters." After three previous Oscar nods for "Memento" and "Inception" (and a snub for "The Dark Knight"), Nolan is still looking for his first victory. Lately, it seems like filmmakers have been taking inspiration from Steven Spielberg's classic "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind." Christopher Nolan recently cited it as an influence on his upcoming "Interstellar," and it looks like the movie will also have some fingerprints on Brad Bird's "Tomorrowland." "Another big influence for Jeff Jensen and I when we first started talking about this story was 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind,' ” screenwriter Damon Lindelof told EW. “Somehow it was able to do what no modern movies are able to do, which is tell a story that doesn’t have a bad guy who is trying to blow up the planet, or giant robots fighting, or lots of karate —though who doesn’t love karate? It was so not plot driven. It was just a pure discovery movie. It was pure what-if. Just that idea of what’s going on here?...

Jeff Jensen: Melissa, for all the self-serving yet correct talk about how expansive and diverse and ambitious television has become over the past few years, the Emmys made TV seem rather small last night.
Maybe I lost my sense of humor over the summer (too much Rectify and Ferguson, I guess), but Seth Meyers didn’t work for me. The Late Night comedian—at his best when seated behind a desk, gleefully reading his sharp, tart jokes and engaging guests with smart chat—kept the show flowing and didn’t fumble. He was an effective game manager, but nothing more.

I didn’t want to watch Outlander. Bodice-rippers generally make me roll my eyes.
Then I learned that Diana Gabaldon, who wrote the book series that inspired the Starz drama, wasn’t a huge fan of romance either. Gabaldon recently told Buzzfeed that her agent encouraged her to bill the first Outlander book as a romance novel, even though it also dabbles in historical fiction, science fiction, and other genres. The idea was that a science fiction best-seller usually sold around 50,000 copies, while romances could reach 500,000. Could Outlander become a breakout hit for Starz? The premium cable network’s buzzy new fantasy drama, based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling novel series, has been viewed nearly 1 million times in the run up to its official Saturday night premiere.
Starz put the first episode (“Sassenach”) of its adaptation online and On Demand this week. So far, the hour has been viewed 897,372 times by more than 600,000 unique viewers. (So, yes, some fans are apparently watching more than once.) Those numbers include viewing via Starz On Demand, Starz.com, YouTube, and Xfinity. Reviewers have been largely positive, including EW’s own Jeff Jensen.

Melissa Maerz: Jeff,
When the Emmy nominations were announced this morning, I was sitting at my desk, shouting, “Hodor! Hodor! Hodor!” Game of Thrones dominated with 19 nominations! Hot pie for everyone! I’d quibble with the fact that Noah Hawley’s fantastic update of Fargo didn’t get a best drama nod, especially since it was the runner-up with 18 nominations, and The Good Wife was unjustly ignored in that category, coming off its best season ever—it might be the only network drama that I truly loved—but the rest of the list was pretty solid. Among the smartest choices...
