She is often confused with the Tamara Jenkins who competed in the Kayak competition at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and posed in Esquire magazine.
After a few years as a performance artist, she made short films while attending the NYU Graduate Film Program, which she completed in 1993. She was then able to develop her autobiographical script to Slums of Beverly Hills (1998) while at the Sundance Institute.
