Fantasia 2012 Review: Starship Troopers: Invasion

25 July 2012 11:50 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Citizens! If you have ever wanted an opportunity to see Paul Verhoeven's pitch-perfect satire of fascism stripped of both its irony and wit, look no further than mecha-suit aficionado Shinji Aramaki's animated sequel Starship Troopers: Invasion and prepare yourself for a whole world of dumb, that's full of guns, but rarely fun. It is a shame because as an animated film Invasion is able to leap above the franchises' Dtv sequels in terms of scope and scale, as well as bringing back the franchise's original trio of protagonists. The film starts with a rescue team dropping in to evacuate a military facility run by a paler and creepier Carl Jenkins that has become overrun with bugs, and ends with a desperate attempt by ever stalwart (and »

Starship Troopers Invasion - Awesome Third Trailer

21 July 2012 10:00 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Here's a new trailer for Starship Troopers Invasion. All of your favorite characters are back in this CG animated movie, set up as a true sequel to 1997's Starship Troopers. There was an awesome saturday morning CG animated show years and years ago that I used to love watching. But I haven't been able to bring myself to re-watch any more of those direct to DVD sequels they've put out. They kinda just got worse and worse, with smaller and smaller budgets.

This has got some great people behind it though. They brought in Appleseed director Shinji Aramaki, who seems to have brought an incredible amount of detail and depth to the world of Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 novel.

Starship Troopers Invasion will be released on Blu-Ray and DVD on August 28. Check out the trailer, and let us know if this gets you're excited for the live-action reboot they're developing. »

Trailer for the CG animated Starship Troopers: Invasion

1 June 2012 9:09 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It's fair to say that outside of Paul Verhoeven's cult 1997 original, the Starship Troopers movie franchise has been nothing short of a disaster. Phil Tippett's direct-to-video 2004 sequel Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation was an abomination, and the return of Casper Van Dien's Johnny Rico for 2008's Starship Troopers 3: Marauder did very little in the way of making amends.

Well, after those two bitter disappointments, Sony is now looking to get the series back on track by channeling the late-90s computer-generated television series Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles with a brand new CG-animated feature film, Starship Troopers: Invasion, from director Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed, Halo Legends) and scriptwriter Flint Dille (Transformers, G.I. Joe). Sadly, if the first trailer released today is anything to go by, they're going to fall some way short of achieving that goal:

The Bugs Are Unleashed in the Japanese Trailer for Starship Troopers: Invasion

I know I’ll end up watching director Shinji Aramaki’s animated sci-fi actioner “Starship Troopers: Invasion” at some point down the road, but it’s not really that high on my list at the moment. Although the flick looks to be nothing more than video game cutscenes edited together to make a feature-length movie, it honestly doesn’t look that bad. Of course, part of my love of the original movie involves Verhoeven’s bizarre sense of humor, which, from the looks of the latest trailer, is nowhere to be found. Then again, for most folks, that might be a good thing. Have a look at this synopsis: A distant Federation outpost Fort Casey comes under attack by bugs. The team on the fast attack ship Alesia is assigned to help the Starship John A. Warden stationed in Fort Casey evacuate along with the survivors and bring military intelligence safely back to Earth. »
