Netflix’s ‘Disjointed’ Is ‘Daily Show’ Writer’s Trippy Version of a Sitcom

13 September 2017 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

David Javerbaum has won 13 Emmys as executive producer and head writer for “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.” But when it came time for his first scripted project, the Netflix series, “Disjointed,” he chose to set the traditional multi-cam workplace sitcom in an unusual setting — a marijuana dispensary, casting Kathy Bates as the one-time radical activist lawyer-turned-mother hen of Ruth’s Alternative Caring.

“Doing the show in front of a live audience is the most traditional form of television there is,” Javerbaum tells Variety of the decision to include a hearty laugh track. “I wanted to juxtapose that familiarity with more daring subject matter. I thought there were fun, experimental things we could do.”

Sporting a series of weed commercial parodies, interstitial visual gags and psychedelic animation, “Disjointed” offers enough trippy surrealism for its presumably partaking audience, while also “normalizing” marijuana within its sitcom context.

And if the tone is mostly snappy repartee, “Disjointed »

Chuck Lorre on Following Up ‘Mom’ With a Pot Comedy, and How Making a Single-Camera Comedy Is Torture

6 September 2017 8:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

After several decades as the king of multi-camera comedy, Chuck Lorre is learning a few new tricks this fall. Lorre just launched his first show for a streaming service, Netflix’s marijuana sitcom “Disjointed,” and is behind this fall’s “The Big Bang Theory” prequel series “Young Sheldon,” which represents his first foray into single-camera half-hours.

“I spent 30 years working in front of an audience, so I’ve got a lot of catching up to do,” Lorre recently told IndieWire and Kcrw’s “The Business,” of learning about filmmaking with “Sheldon.” “I was following [director] Jon Favreau around during the pilot shoot just asking questions. ‘What’s that lens? What’s the camera doing now?’ I got to watch the guy make a movie, which I’d never had a chance to do before.”

Disjointed” was more familiar turf for Lorre, given its multi-camera setup in front of a studio audience. »

'Disjointed': TV Review

23 August 2017 6:30 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - TV News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - TV News news »

I like shows with multipurpose Swiss Army knife titles, and the name of Netflix's Disjointed works as both character description and pun for a comedy about the out-of-sorts oddballs working at a marijuana dispensary. It's also a rather blunt one-word review for a show that attempts to break from its multicamera constraints in ways that are admirable, if not always successful.

Created by Chuck Lorre and David Javerbaum, Disjointed is largely set at Ruth's Alternative Caring, a Los Angeles facility dedicated to the myriad applications of weed and populated by a genial, frequently high assortment of employees, or "budtenders." With »

‘Disjointed’ Review: You Need to Be Stoned to Enjoy Kathy Bates’ Netflix Comedy, and That’s Not High Praise

23 August 2017 12:01 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Disjointed” is a title sporting so many puns that unpacking them proves irresistible. (Pun-haters to the back.) The core word “joint” refers to both a marijuana cigarette and the slang term for any ‘ol place at all; like, say, the dispensary where Kathy Bates’ long-term pot advocate, Ruth, legally sells medicinal and recreational weed in the new Netflix comedy.

“Head to Ruth’s joint and buy as many joints as you’d like!” is a slogan Ruth herself might share in the series: an easy, obvious joke for a show built (mostly) around simple pleasures.

Fans of equally elementary wordplay are probably sold, but not so fast — the new Netflix comedy unveils a harsh buzz upon further pun-vestigation. Optimists could argue “disjointed” refers to the the pieced together family of pot dealers, smokers, and breeders who all work out of Ruth’s shop. That’s a nice thought, but after binging four episodes, »

Netflix is ramping up its sitcom slate with its new original series “Disjointed,” starring Kathy Bates as Ruth Feldman, a lifelong marijuana legalization advocate and new dispensary proprietor.

The trailer shows Bates with long, wavy gray hair — à la Lily Tomlin in “Grace & Frankie” — wearing colorful, pot leaf-adorned hippie garb as she finds her footing as the proud new owner of Ruth’s Alternative Living, accompanied by her three “budtenders,” her twenty-something-year-old son, and a troubled security guard. The trailer promises some PG-13, if not R-rated, content: “What the f—, it’s cool,” Ruth says nonchalantly at the end.

From Chuck Lorre and David Javerbaum, the 30-minute show will also star Tone BellAaron MotenElizabeth AlderferDougie Baldwin, and Elizabeth Ho.
