Natpe Wraps as Syndicators Fight ‘Gridlock,’ Biz Braces for M&A Rush and Miami Breeds Drama

19 January 2017 2:03 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Miami — The impact of Peak TV is all anyone can talk about in the primetime arena. But daytime TV is dealing with the opposite problem: a dearth of new offerings.

Executives who gathered at the Natpe conference this week cited the dilemma that many stations face in having little to choose from in the way of new strips for daytime, afternoon, and early evening hours. One of the biggest impediments is the lack of available time slots in some of the largest markets.

The most crucial stations in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago are stocked up with franchise shows as far out as 2020 in some cases. Megyn Kelly’s Move to Daytime Could Shake Up Syndication Market

16 January 2017 2:26 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Will Megyn Kelly go up against Kelly Ripa? Ellen DeGeneres? Dr. Phil? Or take on the ladies of “The View” and “The Talk”? Kelly’s shift from Fox News to an NBC News-produced daytime show promises to shake up the competitive landscape later this year.

NBC News has yet to disclose the time slot for Kelly’s daily program. The show will be a network hour provided to NBC affiliates, not a syndicated series. The specifics of format have also remained unclear since Kelly surprised the industry on Jan. 3 by announcing her segue from primetime to daytime. Plans for Kelly’s next chapter are being closely watched by rivals of NBC affiliate stations as they make scheduling decisions for the 2017-18 season.

Speculation has centered on Kelly’s show taking over the third (9 a.m.) or fourth (10 a.m.) hours of NBC’s “Today” block. But there’s also been talk of her sliding into 11 a »

Tegna, MGM Set ‘Bold’ Plan for Live Syndicated Series

16 January 2017 6:58 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The Tegna Media station group and MGM have teamed to launch a first-run syndicated strip, “Bold,” that will focus on the day’s news and online trending topics. The plan is to produce updated editions of the half-hour show for each time zone starting in fall 2017.

“Bold,” which stands for Broadcast Online Live Daily, will promote interactive elements encouraging viewers to submit video and content ideas for the show, share their thoughts on the highlighted stories and vote in polls. There’s no word yet on producers or hosts for the series. Lisa Kridos, Tegna’s exec producer of program development, is overseeing the effort.

“The show will reflect how viewers are consuming content across multiple platforms at the same time. ‘Bold’ combines those experiences in an informative, interactive and innovative way. ‘Bold’ will do the heavy lifting, bringing together the day’s top stories, funny and emotional content and viral videos in one place,” said »
