Are some real-life farces too perfectly stupid to accommodate an onscreen take-off? The Best and the Brightest, set in the self-satirizing world of pre-school placement in New York City depicted in the 2009 documentary Nursery University, is a farce that can't quite find its comic register. First-time writer (with Michael Jaeger) and director Josh Shelov's story of a young couple struggling to get their 5-year-old daughter into a private Manhattan kindergarten offers several different tonal possibilities, and Shelov's mix-and-match approach highlights the improbable difficulty of making sport of something too silly for words.

He has to fill up time before Act 4 of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog in some way.
Neil Patrick Harris, known for his roles in How I Met Your Mother & Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, forces himself to get busy with the addition of two films onto his resume. The first of them is The Best and the Brightest, centering on a fresh-faced young couple, Samantha and Jeff, who have only recently moved into town. The couple then has a dawning realization of the lengths they must go to in order to get their five-year-old daughter into school. Written by Josh Shelov & Michael Jaeger and directed by Josh Shelov, this feature comes out in 2010.
The second one on the list is Beastly, a modern-day take on the “Beauty and the Beast” tale where a New York teen is transformed into a hideous monster in order to find true love. Neil Patrick Harris...

He’s a man who has many names: Doogie Howser… Nph… NPattz (patent pending). Neil Patrick Harris saw his career take a Tarantino-esque turn after a co-starring role in “Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle.” The boy who was Doogie Howser had suddenly become a man, and a really freaking crazy man at that. The newfound fame is likely what led to his starring role on the hit TV series “How I Met Your Mother.” By the time the “Harold & Kumar” sequel came up, there wasn’t really a question about seeing Harris return; he is integral to the series now.
Now The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Nph has nailed down his next two projects: a starring role in “The Best and the Brightest” and a support spot in “Beastly.” This news come hot on the heels of Harris’s appearance as the host of last night’s Tony Awards ceremony.

Neil Patrick Harris has snagged two feature film roles: a starring gig in the indie farce "The Best and the Brightest" and a supporting role in CBS Films' "Beastly."
Co-written and directed by Josh Shelov, "Best" revolves around a couple from Delaware who move to New York's Upper East Side and enter the world of the city's private kindergartens.
Harris is playing the husband, who is not worried about his social status. Bonnie Somerville is on board as the class-aware wife. Also cast are Amy Sedaris, John Hodgman, Peter Serafinowicz, Bridget Regan, Kate Mulgrew and Christopher McDonald. Robert and Patricia Weiser are reteaming with Richard Schiffrin -- with whom they collaborated on the steroid documentary "Bigger Stronger Faster" -- to produce along with Nicholas Simon.
Shelov, who penned "Green Street Hooligans" and created the Espn series "Mayne Street," wrote the script with Michael Jaeger. Shooting recently began in Philadelphia.
