Critics were surprised by how much they enjoyed Peter Berg's film, giving credit to its entertainment factor.

Many movie fans have been wary as to whether director Peter Berg could successfully pull of "Battleship." Inspired by a Hasbro board game giving no hint of any type of plot, the sci-fi epic follows the adventures of an international Navy fleet when aliens begin to invade earth. As the two forces go to battle, each must rely on a crafty, cunning strategy in order to conquer their enemy. The all-star, insanely attractive cast includes Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker, Alexander Skarsgård, Liam Neeson and Rihanna, in her movie debut.

While some have written off "Battleship" as a lesser version of "Transformers," critics were surprised by how much they enjoyed the film. They praise the movie for not taking itself too »

Review: Waterlogged 'Battleship' Is A Cynical, Nonsensical & Boring Blockbuster

17 May 2012 8:00 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The following is a reprint of our review from the U.K. release in April.

Expectations are a tricky thing with films. In an age where every teaser, trailer, teaser-for-a-trailer, poster and publicity still are pored over endlessly, many go into a film thinking they know what they'll think afterwards. This can lead to hopes being crushed, or sometimes, for a film that you'd previously dismissed, it turns out to be a pleasant surprise. Last summer, we were dreading "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," only to discover that it was perhaps the best blockbuster of the season. Honestly, very little makes us happier than such a film: a picture that's been mis-marketed that turns out be an absolute treat, that is an entirely different beast to what you thought it was going to be.

"Battleship" is not one of those films. "Battleship" is exactly the kind of film »

This Week in Soundtracks – May 8, 2012, includes ‘Dark Shadows’

A review of soundtracks released May 8, 2012 including films based on soap operas and board games (seriously?) plus a British television series based on a classic character.  Aren’t there any original ideas anymore!?!

Dark Shadows: Original Score by Danny Elfman

Dark Shadows marks the fourteenth time Danny Elfman has scored a Tim Burton film (and sixth with Johnny Depp).  The two came together for Burton’s first feature-length film Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure in 1985 and have since both gone on to have prominent careers.  Their latest collaboration, Dark Shadows, is a remake of a soap opera that aired from 1966-1971.  The original score features the usual gothic orchestral sounds that are associated with Elfman.  One thing that makes this unique from previous Elfman scores is the sometimes use of synthesizers to provide a 70’s vibe, like on the track “Shadows (Reprise).”  Elfman also manages to incorporate the original theme »

The Avengers Is an Often Grand, Occasionally Frustrating B-movie With Several A+ Ingredients

27 April 2012 12:25 PM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

The Avengers 2012

142 minutes

rated PG-13

In a film like The Avengers, which brings together strands of several prior pictures into a mostly cohesive whole, it is arguably inevitable that individual pieces will end up working better than the sum of its parts. That the film works at all is almost a miracle, and it's so purely entertaining and contains so much that works like gangbusters that it's tempting to ignore what doesn't work and merely salute the enterprise. It is a relentlessly engaging and confident motion picture, boasting a cast that in a more respected genre would make it an Oscar-bait film. But the film comes so close to out-and-out greatness that it's almost disheartening to point out the core issues at fault, both because it feels petty and because it's almost a genre masterpiece. Still, there is much to like and quite a bit to love about Joss Whedon's The Avengers. »

Battleship Press Conference: Q&A With Rihanna, Peter Berg, Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker

10 April 2012 9:02 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

At the Corinthian Hotel by the London Embankment on a punishingly hot day back in March, Battleship director Peter Berg, as well as stars Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker and Rihanna, turned out a modest half-hour late to begin a press conference detailing their latest project. Thn was there, as ever, to catch some choice quotes.

Peter Berg on the origins of the movie:

“I’ve wanted to make a Navy film for a long time; my dad was a marine and an amateur Navy historian, and I was brought up studying the great World War II Navy battles here in the Atlantic, between Germany and you guys, England, and the Pacific, the battles between the Americans and the Japanese. I had a real appreciation and respect for the men and women who fought in those battles, so I wanted to make a Navy film. I also wanted to make a »

Brooklyn Decker and Director Peter Berg Talk Battleship, Naval Warfare and the Design of the Aliens at WonderCon

19 March 2012 9:04 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The epic action-adventure Battleship, from director/producer Peter Berg, is about a fleet of ships forced to do battle with an armada of alien origins, in order to discover and prevent their destructive goals for the planet. Kicking off the summer blockbuster season, the movie opens on May 18th. After their panel presentation at WonderCon 2012 (click here for our recap), model-turned-actress Brooklyn Decker and Peter Berg talked about the decision to start revealing more glimpses of the aliens and the machinery in the film, the fact that the aliens don’t act unless acted upon, the balance between the action and the love story with Taylor Kitsch and Decker’s characters, the Naval warfare aspect and what went into the decision of which ships to use, the process of designing the aliens, how much the board game is actually an inspiration for the film, Steve Jablonsky’s score, and the mini Friday Night Lights reunion, »
