Michael Irby was raised in Palm Springs, California. After high school, he moved to New York City and studied at the AADA. He began working in the off-broadway theater scene in Terrence McNally's, Corpus Christi, and Stuck, by Jessica Goldberg. It is around this time, he also started writing and sharing his slam poetry at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe which led to his role in the independent film Pinero, by Leon Ichaso. He is most known for his portrayal of Charles Grey, in the David Mamet military drama The Unit. He has also starred in television series, Almost Human, Line of Fire, and The Haunted. He can be seen in recurring roles on HBO's True Detective and CBS's CSI Cyber. Michael lives in Los Angeles with his wife and son.
