Well, just a week after The Avengers broke box office records here’s another big team-up movie. Instead of super-heroes teaming up, this film showcases a great group of British actors of, uh….a certain age. When these vets get a great script the results can be just as engaging as any CGI-enhanced mayhem. Actually I was reminded a bit of the original Cocoon. Of course there’s no glowing E.T.s, but these mature folks do encounter people of a somewhat alien culture, and their lives are changed radically ( no magic breakdancing, though ). Let’s take a cinematic getaway with some familiar film friends and check into The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ( for the elderly and beautiful ).
In the first scenes of John ( Shakespeare In Love ) Madden’s new work we met the Brits who’ll be sharing a long journey and become the residents of the mentioned hotel. »

There was really just one, green, giant-sized box office story this weekend. Assembling Earth’s Mightiest Heroes proved to be the jackpot as The Avengers were on a record pace, after blitzing through with $80.5 million Friday, filling the multiplexes this weekend and kicking off the summer film season. It didn’t matter if it was IMAX, 3D or 2D, the cash never stopped flowing through a whopping 4,349 theaters. The early estimate is $200.3 million (nearly making up all of it’s $220 million production budget on domestic box office) and worldwide the count is up to $641 million, placing it 55th on the all-time worldwide list. That works out to an unimaginable $46,057 per theater! The next largest opening was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 with $169 million. Not bad for an opening weekend – and people still wonder why so much is invested in big blockbusters and their sequels. When it works folks, »

A feel-good film loaded with humor, drama, life lessons, a star-studded cast and a bit of spice, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel has all the right ingredients for a box-office hit. Based on the novel, ‘These Foolish Things’ by Deborah Maggorch, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel introduces all the seven British retirees from the beginning in search of something. Judi Dench plays the recently widowed housewife in search of breaking out of her shell, Evelyn Greenslade; Tom Wilkinson, the high court judge in search of a lost love from his past life in India and the only character not in the novel,Graham Dashwood; Billy Nighy and Penelope Wilton, the unhappily married couple that lost their life savings to their daughter’s company and are in search of an inexpensive retirement home, Douglas and Jean Ainslie; Maggie Smith, a racist old broad in search of a new hip, Muriel Donnelly »

Based in India, the film adaption of the novel, ‘These Foolish Things’ by Deborah Moggach, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel shows a story of seven English retirees moving to India in hopes of a better (and cheaper!) life where they can rediscover themselves in a foreign land. There to welcome them at this falsely advertised grand retirement palace, which in fact is a rundown home, is managed by young, energetic, and blissfully in denial young man, Sonny (Dev Patel). Though the retirees all come for their own personal reasons, they all join together to become a family of sorts in a foreign land. Through comedy, drama and romance, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a wonderful journey through India with the perfect blend of experienced (Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie, Penelope Winton, Donald Pickup, Dev Patel, Tena Desae) and inexperienced actors guided by the Academy Award nominated director, »

Your parents probably don’t want to go to The Avengers this weekend (and that’s okay!) but audiences can do far worse for themselves than to take a quick cinematic trip to John Madden‘s The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. While a film about a pack of retired Brits heading off to live in a swank retirement resort in India that, surprise!, turns out to be a rundown old hotel might sound like the most boring and narrowly appealing film of the year, Madden’s film is actually consistently delightful and charming, with enough characters and plot points to engage just about any viewer. Running just over two hours, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is able to tackle issues big (homophobia, arranged marriage) and small (there are too many flies in my rundown retirement hotel room!), and despite a few moments that feel far too obvious, Madden and his cast have crafted a lovely film with »

Chicago – Seven desperate souls are taking risks to save some part of their world, which describes both “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” and “The Avengers.” Which will win the box office war? The “heroes” of the Marigold residence include Judi Dench, Tom Wilkerson, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith and Dev Patel.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The slight story relies on often seen clichés in a golden-ager movie mode – man crazy and lonely widows, a horny old man, a used up marriage, a redeemed curmudgeon – but luckily these are filtered through top drawers actors who heighten the stereotypes into something more. This is a film that tries too hard with its message and premise, and is a bit overlong, but has its heart in the right place. It ends up being time well spent with the characters themselves, because of the precise performances in their various journeys.
Seven persons in retirement are at a crossroads, »

"Keep out of the way, I think that's the best way of approaching it." John Madden was joking when he said that was how he handled directing the raft of talented actors who star in his new film, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, but of course there was some truth in there too. How else can you imagine standing on a set that includes Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson and Bill Nighy, not to mention fellow British greats Penelope Wilton, Celia Imrie and Ronald PIckup, plus Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel? That's a lot of main characters to handle, period, before you even start getting into the collective Oscar nominations between them (14, with three wins). And on top of all that, the set in question is in Jaipur, india, the setting of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, where optimistic entrepreneur Sonny (Patel) lures a group of British retirees with »

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Directed by: John Madden
Cast: Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton, Celia Imrie, Ronald Pickup, Dev Patel
Running Time: 2 hrs 2 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: May 4, 2012 (Chicago)
Plot: A group of British retirees travel to India to stay at a dilapidated hotel purposefully geared towards the “elderly and beautiful.”
Who’S It For? Though this film features actors of a higher age, it wisely plays into the stars’ general fan base. If you enjoy Maggie Smith, for example, you might get a couple of guffaws out of watching her play a cranky racist woman here. With its shallow presentation of India, this one would be most enjoyable for people who don’t care to experience another culture. This story is too cheesy for any age.
Overall

This Friday, American movie theaters will be blessed by two ensemble movies boasting a dream cast of top-tier actors in their field. It’s fair to say that the vast majority of audiences will only see one of them: The superhero opus The Avengers.
But some lucky, adventurous moviegoers will treat themselves to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which has arguably assembled the most accomplished company of British acting talent since the final Harry Potter movie: Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey), and Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire), as well as two actors just as adept, »

The dramedy The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, from acclaimed and accomplished director John Madden, follows seven retirees from the U.K. in need of a transformation, who find themselves spending their golden years at a rundown hotel that does not quite live up to the lush amenities pictured in the brochure. The hotel’s naive young owner, Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel), inherited the once sophisticated building from his father, hoping to turn it into a high-end luxury hotel. Instead, the water and electricity are iffy at best, and India’s overwhelming contrasts are both intoxicating and frightening for these seven newcomers, who are unsure about what the future might hold. The film stars Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton, Ronald Pickup and Celia Imrie. During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, director John Madden talked about why this premise was so attractive to him, determining what aspects of India to capture, »

Opening on Friday, May 4th, is The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, John Madden’s outstanding film starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Celia Imrie, Penelope Winton, Ronald Pickup, Dev Patel and Tena Desae. The film revolves around a group of English pensioners who abandon their homeland when enticed by advertisements of ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’, a seemingly luxurious sanctuary for “the elderly and beautiful” in Jaipur, India. On arrival they discover that the hotel falls somewhat short of the romantic idyll but they are gradually won over by the ever-optimistic young entrepreneurial manager, Sonny (Dev Patel). One of the best things about The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, besides of course the incredible cast, is the story and the way it follows both the retirees’ stories and those of the Indian people they meet. The movie illuminates the clashes of the tradition and the modern in India regarding work, »

Review of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, starring Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith, Dev Patel, Celia Imrie, Penelope Wilton and Roland Pickup. A showcase for The Best Older English Actors We All Love. Audiences are probably more familiar with them for their roles in the Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, James Bond or Batman movies. We probably see each onscreen and think “Oh yeah, I like him/her.” Now director John Madden (Shakespeare In Love) has given them a chance to act together as contemporaries and not take a back seat to wizards, pirates or super-heroes. Each is struggling at the beginning though with the changes in their life. Evelyn (Judi Dench) is dealing with the loss of her husband and at having to do things for herself for the first time in her adult life. Muriel (Maggie Smith) has some old-fashioned notions about race and a hip that needs replacing. »
