Why Quentin Tarantino Producer Richard Gladstein Ditched Indie Film to Run the AFI Conservatory

5 May 2017 8:10 AM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

The American Film Institute Conservatory has a new dean in producer Richard Gladstein, and he shamelessly chased down the job.

Gladstein — president of Film Colony, producer of Best Picture Oscar nominees “Finding Neverland” and “The Cider House Rules,” as well as a bevy of Quentin Tarantino movies — comes to a Los Feliz hillside campus that is still bruised after two fractious years under the last dean, Jan Schuette, who last November agreed to step down at the end of June.

No one is more surprised than Gladstein at how much he wanted the gig. He put in a long stint with Harvey Weinstein at Miramax Films, where he started as head of production in 1993. “Oddly it was the same day that Disney bought the company,” he said. “So my first-day press conference with Jeffrey Katzenberg was my initiation. ‘Snowden’ Review

Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Nicholas Cage, Rhys Ifans, Tom Wilkinson, Joely Richardson | Written by Oliver Stone, Kieran Fitzgerald | Directed by Oliver Stone

It seems the perfect time to be releasing Snowden on DVD and Blu-ray, we are constantly hearing about how hacking has influenced events in America. With Oliver Stone directing, it seems he is a good choice because of his Anarchic choice of films he directs, but has he delivered a movie fitting of such a massive historical event?

When Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) decides to go down the Nsa/CIA route of fighting to protect his country he proves to be very adept at creating systems to spy on individuals of interest. When he learns of the true scale of surveillance though, he finds himself turning whistle-blower to wake people up to how governments are attacking people’s privacy.

Snowden movie review: the system’s self-correction

3 April 2017 1:47 PM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

MaryAnn’s quick take… A gripping précis of what Edward Snowden learned at the CIA and Nsa, why he went public, and why it matters. Entertaining yet also deeply unsettling. I’m “biast” (pro): big fan of Oliver Stone, and of Edward Snowden; love the cast

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Snowden opens in June 2013, as journalists Laura Poitras (Melissa Leo: London Has Fallen, The Big Short) and Glenn Greenwald (Zachary Quinto: Star Trek Beyond, Hitman: Agent 47) first meet and interview, over several days, Nsa whistleblower Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt: The Night Before, The Walk), in a hotel in Hong Kong. My first thought upon my second viewing this weekend of Oliver Stone’s (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, W.) gripping docudrama about these shocking real-life events is »

The Us government could be watching you right now. After the explosive revelations regarding the reach of the surveillance state, we all looked at that ominous pinhole webcam nestled atop our screens with a lot more suspicion. It’s a concern that is as relevant today as it ever was, the news still reporting on supposed wiretapping and hacking. Oliver Stone’s latest film Snowden manages to give an accessible account of mass surveillance and the moral questions behind it, whilst focusing on the personal story »

Oliver Stone and the Cast of ‘Snowden’ Discuss the Challenges of Tackling a Historic Decade

22 February 2017 12:19 PM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

[Editor’s Note: This post is presented in partnership with Spectrum. Catch up on this year’s Awards Season contenders and the latest films On Demand. Today’s pick is “Snowden.”]

The opening titles of “Snowden” explain that the film dramatizes events from 2004 to 2013, but the film was clearly designed to speak to audiences years after that.

Snowden” is the latest effort from polarizing filmmaker Oliver Stone, who finds himself back in familiar territory, in a firmly political realm. It’s the story behind Edward Snowden’s rise through the CIA before his 2013 whistleblowing efforts, all the way up through the events detailed in Laura Poitras’ documentary “Citizenfour.”

In addition to tackling the timeline that took Snowden from army recruit to figure of global import, “Snowden” contextualizes the full scope of his revelations. What doesn’t come through in heated arguments and hushed conversations is on display in hypnotic sequences of psychedelic digital networks, all made up of personal data.

Bouncing around the nine years of Snowden’s life up until his public reveal is a tricky proposition. But using the »

41 trailer scenes that didn’t make the final film

Rob Leane Feb 10, 2017

Star Wars, Terminator 2, Fantastic Beasts and more: they all have scenes in the trailer, that never made the final film...

More often than you might think, scenes that appear in movie trailer don’t turn up in the finished film. This can leave trailer-loving audience members confused as the credits roll, wondering if they dropped off and missed something important.

See related  Iron Fist: what to expect from Marvel’s Netflix hero Luke Cage smashed Marvel's 2016 Netflix ratings Daredevil season 3: Vincent D’Onofrio mulls Fisk's return Marvel's The Defenders: more images arrive

A couple of massive movies have done this recently, and the internet has been quick to fill in the blanks with speculation. Fingers have been pointed at tinkering studio bigwigs and extensive reshoots, when the reality is often a little less dramatic: filmmakers always chop some footage in the edit, and they rarely have much involvement in the trailers. »

True Blood’s Stephen Moyer And Anna Paquin Reunite For The Parting Glass

20 January 2017 3:45 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Like many actors before him, True Blood‘s Stephen Moyer’s been bitten by the directing bug. He’ll make his feature film directorial debut with The Parting Glass, a dark family drama which will give him another chance to work with Anna Paquin, who’s set to star in the film.

Details are limited at the moment, but The Parting Glass‘s logline tells us that Moyer’s upcoming film will follow a grieving family following the death of a sister. From there, they’ll collect the remnants of her lost life as they attempt to paint a portrait of her existence. It doesn’t exactly sound like the most uplifting material then, but it’s got us intrigued nonetheless.

In addition to Paquin, the film is also set to star Ed Asner, Cynthia Nixon, Melissa Leo, Rhys Ifans, Paul Gross and Denis O’Hare, who wrote the screenplay. »
