“Last Blood” To Be First Film From Webcomic?

25 July 2011 11:58 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

This is a milestone: it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con that a live-action adaptation of Last Blood, a webcomic first published on Keenspot back in 2006, is in the works with Simon Hunter (The Mutant Chronicles) directing with an anticipated 2012 release. To our knowledge, this is the furthest any webcomic has gone towards being adapted into a feature film.

The premise is amazingly simple: After zombies take over the Earth, vampires must protect the last surviving humans so they can live off their blood. Wackiness, as they say, ensues.

Last Blood will be produced by Ironclad exec producer Christian Arnold-Beutel as well as Red Giant Media’s Aimee Schoof, Isen Robbins and Benny R. Powell, and Chris and Bobby Crosby. The Crosby siblings created the graphic novel with illustrator Owen Gieni, and Bobby Crosby wrote the script with Nick V. Sterling.

Simon Hunter Tapped to Direct ‘Last Blood’

23 July 2011 2:10 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

To be honest I’m surprised someone didn’t come up with sooner. Deadline reports that Simon Hunter has been signed to direct Last Blood, an adaptation of a graphic novel released by Keenspot. Last Blood takes place after a zombie apocalypse in which the walking dead has overrun humans and are slowly hunting them into extinction. This doesn’t bode well for the vampire population, who need the human blood to survive, so they decide to mount an offensive against the undead threat.

Hunter is perhaps best known for the 2009 low budget sci-fi movie Mutant Chronicles starring Thomas Jane. And if you know him from that, you are probably nervous that his new project will turn out just as bad. The movie’s production is being handled by a company called Benderspink, who obtained the rights back in 2008.

The idea of a “vampires Vs. zombies” movie sounded a bit dubious to me, »

Vampire Graphic Novel Last Blood to get Film Adaptation

23 July 2011 7:54 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Mutant Chronicles director Simon Hunter has been hired to direct a live-action adaptation of the vampire graphic novel Last Blood.

The graphic novel was created by Chris and Bobby Cosby, and the story takes place “after a zombie apocalypse, when vampires must battle to protect the last surviving humans to keep alive the necessary blood supply.”

That plot sounds a lot like the Ethan Hawk vampire film Daybreakers, but with a zombie apocalypse. I’ve become very skeptical of vampire movies like this because these days they rarely turn out good, but I’m still willing to give this a chance because you never know, it could actually turn out being a really good movie.

I'm still not sure about director Simon Hunter, Mutant Chronicles ended up not being as good as I was hoping. Do you think this will end up turning out to be a good movie?

Comic-Con used to be a comic, sci-fi and fan convention, but nowadays the annual affair has become so mainstream that every high-concept horror, science fiction and thriller feature -- no matter its comic or cult roots -- gets big play in San Diego. So it's refreshing when there's an announcement at Comic-Con about a an actual graphic novel (albeit an online one) being turned into a film. That would be 'Last Blood,' written by Bobby Crosby and illustrated by Owen Gieni, which takes place after a zombie apocalypse when vampires must protect the last surviving humans so they can live off their blood. The live-action film will be directed by Simon Hunter, who helmed 'Mutant Chronicles,' an actioner that stars Thomas Jane, John Malkovich, Ron Perlman and Devon Aoki. [Deadline]

Teaser One-Sheet Debut - Simon Hunter's Safe House

13 January 2011 12:45 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Mutant Chronicles director Simon Hunter has been in the headlines a lot lately, and given the fact that he has several horror projects in various stages of production, that's not too big of a surprise. Next up? The teaser one-sheet for his film Safe House.

Lena Headey ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," Laid to Rest) and Michael Ironside (Terminator: Salvation) are set to star in Hunter's latest film, which is set to go before cameras in March. Producer Steve Iles of Spirit Pictures pitches it as Assault on Precinct 13 meets The Thing. Andy Briggs has written the screenplay.

Safe House follows a team of Us Marshals charged with protecting a mob trial witness and her teenage daughter, Alice. Mother and daughter are relocated to an isolated compound high in the California Rockies. The location appears secure -- outfitted specifically for witness protection -- yet, its past is steeped in mystery and violence. »

Lena Headey’s “Safe House” is not to be confused with the upcoming action-thriller “Safe House” starring Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington, coming out in 2012. Headey’s “Safe House” is a horror flick, and will most likely be out by 2011 or thereabouts if all goes well, or it could end up with a new title by the time production wraps as not to confuse the two films. The film is being directed by Simon Hunter, who last helmed the underrated (if you like, you know, monster-splatter movies, that is) “The Mutant Chronicles”. Via Bloody-Disgusting, the plot goes thusly: Safe House follows a team of Us Marshals charged with protecting a mob-trial witness and her teenage daughter, Alice. Director Simon Hunter Talks about Full Moon Fever And The Obituary

12 January 2011 4:41 AM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Mutant Chronicles director Simon Hunter has several more projects in the works, two of which are Full Moon Fever and The Obituary that he talks about on his website.

He’s working on Full Moon Fever which is an adaptation of Joe Casey's graphic novel series. Hunter describes the film as "...a real high concept fun movie. Think of it as Dog Soldiers in space!"

Set in the not-too-distant future, Full Moon Fever follows a group of blue-collar workers that are sent to repair the deserted first lunar base on the dark side of the moon; they soon discover they're not alone as they fall prey to a pack of ravenous werewolves. Werewolves on the moon? I’m curious Mr. Hunter!

Hunter also has The Obituary in the works, which he’s teamed up with producer Tim Dennison and scribe Andy Brigg. Scope out the rundown for The Obituary. »
