Film financing awards return after 5 years

HONG KONG -- After a hiatus of five years, the Hong Kong Film Financing Forum on Thursday announced more than $50,000 worth of awards to aspiring filmmakers from across Asia after a three-day assessment of 28 projects by distributors, financiers and potential production partners. Held as part of the Entertainment Expo Hong Kong, which also comprises tradeshow Filmart and the Hong Kong International Film Festival, HAF was first held in 2000. A 2003 edition had been planned but was canceled because of thhe SARS outbreak. It's modeled on the Pusan International Film Festival's project-financing market, the Pusan Promotion Plan, and the Rotterdam Film Festival's CineMart. Culled from 200 submissions, the 28 selected projects were in various stages of readiness. Four were chosen from a professional committee to receive monetary and in-kind awards. The main award, worth $HK100,000 ($12,800), and based on being the "most creative storyline," went to Ann Hui's At the World's End. »

HONG KONG -- The second Hong Kong Asian Film Financing Forum has announced 28 projects, including some from a number of established directors from around the Asian region, as part of the Entertainment Expo to take place March 22-April 6. Among the directors who will be presenting projects at HAF, which will be held concurrently with the FILMART programming trade show (March 22-26), are Thai director Pen-ek Ratanaruang (Last Life in the Universe), Hong Kong's Ann Hui (Summer Snow) and Lo Chi-leung (Inner Senses), and Mainland Chinese directors Lu Chuan, who recently won Taiwan's Golden Horse Award for Kekexili: Mountain Patrol, and Jiang Wen (Devil at My Doorstep). »
