Upfronts 2017: From More ‘Big Bang Theory’ to Another ‘X-Files,’ What the Networks Have in Store

10 May 2017 9:45 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Heading into upfronts, it’s harder than ever to differentiate TV’s winners from its losers. By the old metric of success — Nielsen live-plus-same-day ratings — the most watched Big Four broadcaster and the least are separated by less than half a ratings point. Even the delayed-viewing and multiplatform metrics against which advertising is now sold fail to tell a full story. The studios that produce television make significant money from subscription-video services that stream series after their broadcast window, as well as from the international rights to those shows. Thus ownership now plays an enormous role in programming decisions — and makes the story of a show’s success or failure more complex than anything a linear viewing measurement alone could tell. But the choices made before the unveiling of fall schedules next week remain consequential. The fates of networks — and of the executives who run them — will rise and fall on their outcomes. Early Pilot Buzz: What’s Heating Up for the 2017-2018 TV Season?

28 April 2017 1:45 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

With Upfronts still more than two weeks away, it’s still early in the decision-making process, but as the current broadcast season winds down, television executives are beginning to form opinions on the pilots in contention for their network’s 2017-2018 slate.

As always, a handful of projects are rising as early frontrunners, while others have not impressed with their first cuts and are in need of re-shoots and re-tooling. No stark trends have emerged across the broadcast networks, though there are a number of military-themed dramas, many female-led comedies and lighter one-hours in the works. In contrast to the past few pilot seasons, reboots are not as hot this year, though there are a few, such as the CW’s “Dynasty,” “S.W.A.T.” at CBS and “What About Barb” at NBC.

Of course, television executives and writers are all on edge with a possible WGA strike on the horizon, but »

Michael Davis: Not The American Dream

5 April 2017 12:00 PM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

When I was eight years old, I was racing my new Tonka toy truck up and down the concrete sidewalk on my block. I was doing so by bending over and pushing the truck as fast as I could with both hands.

The truck slipped out of my hand, and my momentum carried me quite a bit before I came to a stop.

I was fortunate my clothing protected most of me. Unfortunately, most of me did not include my face. My head skidded face down. As a result, the sidewalk tore much of the skin off my face.

My mother had just learned to drive and wasn’t very good at it.

I didn’t help I was screaming and crying as was my sister. She was screaming and crying not so much because my face looked like it had been through a meat grinder but because my mother was screaming and crying. »
