Sang the role of Rev. Bushrod in the original Broadway production of Leonard Bernstein and Alan Jay Lerner's notorious musical flop "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue". The music was later re-fashioned by Bernstein into "A White House Cantata", which has attracted a great deal of attention and some very favorable reviews.

He understudied the role of Jake in the Houston Opera's 1976 production of "Porgy and Bess", and sang it in the first Metropolitan Opera production of the work. (He was later replaced in the role at the Met by David Arnold).
