“Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they?” says Linda Martell, a country music pioneer, in the intro to Beyoncé’s “Spaghettii.” “In theory, they have a simple definition that’s easy to understand, but in practice, well, some may feel confined.” Those two sentences perfectly sum up how Beyoncé has subverted expectations in recent years by spreading her wings beyond pop, hip-hop, and R&b to infuse rock, house, and now country music into her own unique style that ultimately really is just “Beyoncé.”

Rolling Stone interview series Unknown Legends features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and veteran musicians who have toured and recorded alongside icons for years, if not decades. All are renowned in the business, but some are less well known to the general public. Here, these artists tell their complete stories, giving an up-close look at life on music’s A list. This edition features backup bassist Billy Sherwood.
If you saw Yes on the 1994 Talk tour and then again anytime during the past seven years, you were essentially seeing two different bands.

Green Arrow's trick arrows are legendary, with unconventional options like the Boxing Glove Arrow and Mind-Reading Arrow standing out among the most memorable. However, there is one arrow in Oliver Queen's quiver that is much more powerful than anything else he has. In Justice League of America #65, Green Arrow unveils his most destructive arrow: the Atomic Warhead Arrow. While a Kryptonite arrow can harm Superman, the Atomic Warhead Arrow also has the potential to cause serious damage to the Man of Steel.
One trademark of DC's Green Arrow is his absurd numbers of trick arrows. Ollie has used Boxing Glove Arrows, Iron-Lung Arrows, Mind-Reading Arrows, and even Kryptonite Arrows in his time fighting crime. Some readers might assume the Kryptonite arrow is the only arrow Oliver has in his arsenal that could harm Superman – but it turns out Oliver has one rarely-used arrow that could take down the Man of Steel.

The Justice League recruit only the best and brightest heroes to join their ranks, with icons like Wonder Woman, Flash, Batman, and Superman representing heroism on a near-godlike level. However, over the years, many other heroes have gotten a chance to join the team... only for fans to totally forget their triumphs and sacrifices.
Here, then, are the 16 most powerful heroes who joined the Justice League but who are often forgotten as members. Not all of these heroes are obscure, but they all get totally ignored in terms of their services to the Justice League. Whether in discussions between fans, 'most powerful' lists, or big-screen adaptations, these heroes aren't thought of as Justice Leaguers, despite in many cases having given everything as part of the team.

The Justice League might be one of the greatest fighting forces in the DC Universe, but they've had their share of heartbreaks over the years. While the team has opened its ranks to many, that extension has occasionally been repaid with betrayal, sometimes by the most unexpected of allies.
It's always unfortunate when a villain attacks and gets the best of the League. But when the team is double-crossed or otherwise hurt by those they trust, it hurts the League so much worse. From new recruits to founding members, discover the 15 biggest betrayals the Justice League has ever suffered from.

The Justice League is one of the most powerful super-teams in comics, boasting a line-up of the greatest heroes in the DC Universe. The 1990s was a big decade for the team in particular, seeing them become one of DC’s biggest-selling titles, and some new heroes were influential to reach these new heights.
By the time the 1990’s rolled around, the Justice League was having something of an identity crisis. The Justice League International years that saw the title swerve into a more humorous direction had played itself out, and DC’s premiere super-team struggled to find a new identity. All of that changed in 1996, however, when Grant Morrison and Howard Porter revamped the super-team into Jla, which brought back the classic line-up of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman and paired them with the next-generation heroes like Kyle Rayner and Wally West. The title shot up the sales charts...

Jon Anderson started Yes in 1968 with bassist Chris Squire, and the prog rock band was at the center of his life for the next four decades through numerous permutations. But when illness forced him off the road after the group’s 2004 tour, Yes decided to hire a replacement vocalist and carry on without him. Anderson has been healthy and active for well over a decade, but the band — which now features Seventies guitarist Steve Howe, Drama-era keyboardist Geoff Downes, and hired guns — refuses to take him back.

In the last few years, Cj Strock, a talent agent who worked with the later incarnation of the Allman Brothers Band, faced an unusual dilemma. As seen in catalog and merch sales, a market still existed for the Allmans, their quintessentially Southern rock & roll, and their improvisational live shows, but the band itself didn’t exist: They formally gave their last performances in 2014, and Gregg Allman died of liver cancer three years later.
With an eye toward introducing new fans to the band, Strock had an idea — essentially a new Allmans.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses several major plot elements throughout “Black Adam,” now playing in theaters.
Dwayne Johnson has long promised that “the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change” with his movie “Black Adam.” Now that it’s finally released in theaters…will it change anything?
The post-credits scene certainly hopes so. Fans had long been clamoring for Johnson’s super-strong villain to face off against another all-powerful DC hero: Henry Cavill’s Superman. Johnson himself had even been teasing the showdown at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con and on the “Black Adam” world premiere red carpet. Much to the fans’ delight, Johnson and the “Black Adam” team listened to their request.
Cavill’s Superman does appear in the post-credits scene, and there seems to be some hostility between him and Black Adam. But first, the scene starts out with Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller...

The dawn of the Eighties was supposed to make prog bands like Genesis, Yes, and Rush die out like the dinosaurs, now that we were in the age of MTV and New Wave. That’s not quite how it played it out, however. The men of these bands chopped off their long hair, cut their standard 20-minute songs down to size, and somehow became more popular than ever. They even joined forced in various short-lived supergroups and charted with slick hits that competed for Top 40 airplay alongside the latest offerings by Madonna and Michael Jackson.

Twenty-nine years ago, Yes lead singer Jon Anderson abandoned a half-finished solo album called Uzlot that he’d been been recording in Big Bear, California, with his bandmates Chris Squire and Alan White. Yes were gearing up for a massive reunion tour and he simply put the master tapes in his garage and gave them very little thought as the years started racing by. Thirty-five years after the Ridley Scott sci-fi original (which was not an initial box office success but grew into a cult favorite), the long-aborning sequel “Blade Runner: 2049” had much to recommend it: rave reviews, Denis Villeneuve directing his follow-up to sci-fi Oscar-winner “Arrival”; Ryan Gosling’s first wide release since “La La Land”; a committed multi-generational smart sci-fi fan base.
So why did the movie fall short of expectations? It was expected to score at least $40 million domestically against a $155-185-million budget: $31 million marks a serious under-performer and suggests that to the extent that Villeneuve channeled the original, he may have delivered an artistic achievement that is not mainstream.
With most of the world outside Asia already playing the film, the initial foreign $81 million take will not yield $300-million worldwide — which is close to what the movie cost to make and market (shared by Alcon Entertainment and financier...

Fiction has a way of influencing real life. Cell phones are essentially Star Trek communicators, for example, and there is a long history of science being inspired by works of fiction, be it in a book or on screen. That being the case, it seems like an inevitability that someday, we will see some kind of true-to-form Iron Man suit on a battlefield somewhere. For now, this insanely elaborate "toy" will have to do.
The YouTube video below shows the life-sized Iron Man suit, which is based on the Mark 43 version of the suit from the Marvel Universe. It is truly incredible and has 567 moving parts. If you want to get your hands on it, you certainly can. Might make a great last minute Christmas gift for the hardcore Marvel fan in your life. As long as you have an extra $360 thousand dollars laying around that is. Unfortunately, that probably doesn't include shipping.

Back in March, producer Charles Roven revealed that Warner Bros.' upcoming Suicide Squad would not be an R-rated movie, even after the massive success of 20th Century Fox's Deadpool. The producer revealed that the studio was aiming for a PG-13 rating, much like they did with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and today it was made official. The MPAA handed out a PG-13 rating to Suicide Squad for "sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior, suggestive content and language." Warner Bros. has also unveiled new merchandise for this comic book adaptation.

Ioncinema.com’s Ioncinephile of the Month feature focuses on an emerging filmmaker from the world of cinema….but we would be disingenuous in categorizing this month’s spotlighted artist as a “new” arrival on the scene as this person as added a significant of contributions to the American independent film landscape.
This October, we feature Reed Morano, an award-winning cinematographer who’s deft craftsmanship can be found in works dating back to Courtney Hunt’s Frozen River and So Yong Kim’s For Ellen to more recent oeuvres in John Krokidas’ Kill Your Darlings and Mark Jackson’s War Story. Morano made the transition to directing, wearing not one but two hats on Meadowland, a soberingly thoughtful examination on loss, grief and an eschewing type of salvation starring Olivia Wilde in a performance that several are calling both fearless and ferocious.

We kicked off this week with a look at Hot Toys new Hawkeye action figure from Avengers: Age of Ultron. Now, fittingly, we end it with one of the coolest dolls offered in this latest line-up. Yes, its our first look at Tony Stark's Iron Man Mark VII Stealth Armor. Though, it should be noted, there is nothing to indicate or confirm that we'll actually get to see this armor, which allows Tony to travel undetected under the cloak of night, on the big screen in Avengers 2 when it opens this May.
The Iron Man Mark VII Stealth Mode collectible figure is the latest addition to Hot Toys upcoming action figure line for director Joss Whedon's anticipated sequel. The highly detailed doll features multiple layers and various shades of metallic and matte black color with digital camouflage design, translucent black chest armor and articulated flaps on back of legs,...

The current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series continues to be a favorite of mine. It strikes the right balance between being a goofy, fun cartoon about a bunch of lovable characters and addressing more serious and dark themes about power and responsibility. It also does well at adding new ideas, characters, and material while including homages to previous incarnations of Tmnt and staying true to the foundations of the overall series. The art is pretty cool and unique; and of course, the voice talent and creative team are stellar.
The series is now in Season 3 (and already renewed for a fourth season!) and has taken on a slightly different focus, with the Turtles leaving the familiar NYC cityscape for other territory. A short while ago I got to sit down at the Times Square Toys “R” Us (a super-cool store with a Ferris wheel and other nifty things inside...

It was just over 20 years ago that the world went bonkers for Beanie Babies, Ty's simple stuffed animals full of, well, beans. Two decades after the Beanie bonanza, the critters aren't worth thousands like some had hoped, and many collections have been relegated to the basement closet. But the rise and fall of Beanie Babies hasn't stopped other stuffed animals trends. The digitally connected Webkinz took off in 2005, and now it appears to be Tsum Tsum's turn. Tsum Tsum are pill-shaped plushies of varying sizes with the faces of popular Disney characters, and they are selling out fast, reports The New York Times.

Johnny Cash: Blood, Sweat and Tears (Columbia)
Some of Cash's '60s concept albums were burdened with much too talking between tracks; here the tribute to the American working man gets to mostly stand alone on its musical merits, and shines. Notably, it incluces the top version of the traditional "John Henry"” about the most legendarily heroic working man ever, and the version of "Casey Jones" here is classic as well. Politically and psychologically, Cash was the perfect man for this job.
1968
Byrds: Notorious Byrd Brothers (Columbia)
Sometimes transitional albums, confusing listeners expecting a group's earlier style, are underrated. Not so with this classic. It's true that it didn't sell as well as earlier Byrds LPs, nor did the single from the album chart very high, but for decades Notorious Byrd Brothers has been widely revered, and not just by fans; some critics have even anointed it as the band's best album.
