Nominations for the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

14 December 2011 11:30 AM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

The Screen Actors Guild has announced their list of nominations for the best performances of 2011. I have to point out that I'm surprised Tom Hardy and Joel Edgarton weren't nominated for their roles in Warrior, because they were pretty damn awesome in that film. I think they deserved a nom more than Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm a huge fan of DiCaprio but his performance in J. Edgar wasn't his best. Brad Pitt will end up taking home the award for Moneyball though. It was great to see Bridesmaids and The Help get a nomination for best ensemble cast. It will be interesting to see who takes home the award on this list, and how many of them will make their way to the Oscars.

Who would you like to see take home the award?

Here's the full press released with the list of Nominations:

Leonardo DiCaprio/Clint Eastwood/J. Edgar Opens Modestly; Better Box-Office Chances Overseas?

13 November 2011 1:46 PM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Leonardo DiCaprio, J. Edgar Adam Sandler in Drag/Jack And Jill Below Sandler Box-Office Average; Tower Heist Down 45% At no. 5 on the domestic box-office chart this weekend, Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar raked in $11.47 million — at the very lower end of expectations — as per studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. The J. Edgar Hoover biopic starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Hoover, Armie Hammer as his associate and intimate companion Clyde Tolson, and Naomi Watts as FBI secretary Helen Gandy averaged an acceptable — though not very promising — $6,005 at 1,910 locations. As mentioned in a couple of previous posts, comparisons to Gus Van Sant's Oscar-nominated Milk, which were possible on Wednesday, are impossible to make at this stage. Written by J. Edgar's Dustin Lance Black, the 2008 drama starring Sean Penn as gay San Francisco politician Harvey Milk never played at more than 900 North American sites — and that expansion took place around Oscar time, »

Clint Eastwood/Leonardo DiCaprio J. Edgar Unlikely to Reach Martin Scorsese/DiCaprio The Aviator Success

12 November 2011 5:53 PM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Leonardo DiCaprio, Clint Eastwood, J. Edgar Henry Cavill/Tarsem Singh Immortals May Reach $38m: Box Office At no. 5 on the domestic box-office chart on Friday, Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar raked in $4.25 million as per Box Office Mojo. If the J. Edgar Hoover biopic starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, and Naomi Watts reaches $12 million for the weekend, that means an acceptable — though not very promising — $6,312 average at 1,901 locations. Comparisons to Gus Van Sant's Milk, which were possible on Wednesday, become trickier at this stage. Written by J. Edgar's Dustin Lance Black, the 2008 drama starring Sean Penn as the gay San Francisco politician Harvey Milk never played at more than 900 North American locations — and that expansion took place around Oscar time, more than two months after the film's late November debut. Made for a reported $20m, Milk went on to gross only $31.84m at the domestic box office; J. Edgar »

Leonardo DiCaprio/Clint Eastwood J. Edgar: Middling Box-Office Debut

12 November 2011 2:19 AM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Armie Hammer as Clyde Tolson, Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover, Judi Dench as Anne Marie Hoover, J. Edgar Jack And Jill/Adam Sandler in Drag: Second-Lowest-Grossing Sandler Comedy in Past Five Years? According to unproven — and quite possibly unfounded — rumors, FBI emperor J. Edgar Hoover enjoyed wearing some nice-fitting dresses every now and then. Ironically, this weekend the all-powerful Hoover will surely be beaten at the Us/Canada box office by another cross-dresser: Adam Sandler in Jack and Jill. How the mighty have fallen. At no. 5 on the domestic box-office chart, Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar will likely rake in $10-$12 million for the weekend after grossing $3.5-$4 million on Friday. Even if the Hoover biopic reaches $12 million, that means an acceptable — though hardly very promising — $6,312 average at 1,901 locations. (Deadline has $13 million for the weekend, but that could be a typo, unless Warner Bros. is expecting the adult-oriented J. Edgar »

Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black Talks J. Edgar, The Barefoot Bandit, and Ron Howard’s Under The Banner Of Heaven

10 November 2011 6:08 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

With director Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar now playing in limited release, I recently got to speak with screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Milk).  Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover, the controversial founding director of the FBI, the film boasts a great supporting cast including Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Judi Dench, Josh Lucas and Ken Howard.  You can watch the trailer here. During my exclusive interview, Lance Black talks about how he prepared to write the screenplay, why he wanted to tell the story, his reaction to Eastwood directing his screenplay, how they cut out a lot of the first act in the editing room, and how he wanted the script to be faithful to the truth.  In addition, he talked about The Barefoot Bandit, which is based on the true story of Colton Harris-Moore, and after he finishes he’ll move on to Under the Banner of Heaven, which »

Clint Eastwood/Leonardo DiCaprio J. Edgar Has Okay Opening; Behind Milk: Box Office

10 November 2011 1:07 PM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Leonardo DiCaprio, J. Edgar Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar Hoover biopic J. Edgar grossed $52,645 according to Box Office Mojo. The Warner Bros. release starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the FBI honcho and Armie Hammer as his intimate "friend" Clyde Tolson is currently screening at seven locations. The film's average was a not-too-impressive $7,571 per theater. For comparison's sake: on November 26, 2008, Gus Van Sant's Milk, another biopic about a gay figure written by J. Edgar screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, collected $268k at 34 locations, averaging $7,897 (about $9,150 today) per site. Remember that all things being equal, the lower the number of theaters, the higher the per-theater average should be. In other words, Milk had a considerably stronger first-day opening than J. Edgar. But then again, Milk opened the day before the Thanksgiving holiday; that could have made a difference. Milk, which stars Sean Penn as slain gay San Francisco politician Harvey Milk, went on »

72 Images for J. Edgar Starring Leonardo DiCaprio

26 October 2011 11:31 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

You are intrigued by J. EdgarLeonardo DiCaprio stars as J. Edgar Hoover, the controversial founding director of the FBI.  The supporting cast---Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Judi Dench, Josh Lucas, Ken Howard---is filled with scene-ste.  And director Clint Eastwood is a reliable octogenarian.  Barring unexpected critical disappointment, J. Edgar is as much a lock for a Best Picture nomination come Oscar season. To satisfy that intrigue, Warner Bros. has released 72 (count 'em, 72) new images from the film.  The collection includes quite a few of DiCaprio in old age makeup (a sight that fascinates me), and several behind-the-scenes shots of Eastwood working out a scene. J. Edgar opens in limited release on November 9, and expands nationwide on November 11.  Bask in the period detail of 72 photos after the jump. We've posted a few of these before in our previous J. Edgar coverage, but obviously the majority are new. [gallery link="file" order="Desc" columns="1" orderby="title"] Official synopsis: During his lifetime, »

Win Passes To The J. Edgar Screening In St. Louis

25 October 2011 12:07 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

During his lifetime, J. Edgar Hoover would rise to be the most powerful man in America. As head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for nearly 50 years, he would stop at nothing to protect his country. Through eight presidents and three wars, Hoover waged battle against threats both real and perceived, often bending the rules to keep his countrymen safe. His methods were at once ruthless and heroic, with the admiration of the world his most coveted, if ever elusive, prize. Hoover was a man who placed great value on secrets – particularly those of others – and was not afraid to use that information to exert authority over the leading figures in the nation. Understanding that knowledge is power and fear poses opportunity, he used both to gain unprecedented influence and to build a reputation that was both formidable and untouchable. He was as guarded in his private life as he was in his public one, »

The committees charged with forming a plan to merge the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists wrapped their third official meeting Wednesday night in Los Angeles. In a joint statement, SAG president Ken Howard and AFTRA president Roberta Reardon called the meeting "remarkably productive," adding, "We made solid progress across the full spectrum of issues we have to consider."The statement did not go into detail as to what those issues are. Both unions have been tight-lipped regarding the specifics of merger, including how a new union would be structured, what its name would be, and how its formation would impact the unions' pension and health plans.Speaking to Back Stage in August, prior to the committees' second official meeting, SAG president Ken Howard noted that the pension and health plans are independent organizations whose trustees are appointed by the unions and employers.
