Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows producer reflects on box office disappointment, doesn’t think there’ll be a third movie

31 October 2016 9:30 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Despite facing a backlash of near-Ghostbusters proportions when it was first announced, the Michael Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot proved to be a solid hit around the globe, earning close to $500 million worldwide back in 2014. With those kinds of numbers, a sequel was inevitable and sure enough it arrived this year, although Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows failed to replicate the success of its predecessor, grossing half the box office with $245.6 million worldwide.

Speaking to Collider, producer Andrew Form has reflected on the disappointing returns for Out of the Shadows, stating that they were happy with how the movie turned out, and aren’t quite sure why it failed to find an audience.

“We were obviously surprised at the box office results. We loved the movie,” said Form. “We loved making the movie. From our first Super Bowl teaser to everything we launched, we felt so good about our material, »

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows opens to $69 million

6 June 2016 5:00 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It’s Turtle Power once again as the Heroes in a Half-Shell have topped the Us box office, but it’s not pizzas all round.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows [read our reviews here, here and here] opened against romance flick Me Before You and comedy Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping to earn an estimated $35 million, knocking X-Men: Apocalypse from the top spot. The bad news however is that this is a 46% drop-off from 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which opened to $65.5 million. Worse still, the sequel’s budget had been increased by $10 million, so this is not the news Paramount would have hoped for. In terms of domestic totals, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is looking to make $90-$100 million, a huge drop off from its predecessor.

Worldwide, the movie opened in 40 markets and earned around $34 million with the UK delivering the highest revenue. That brings the Turtles total to $69 million. »

Ninja Turtles 2 Wins the Weekend Box Office with $35.2M

5 June 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After winning at the box office with $65.3 million over the three-day weekend and $80 million over the four-day holiday, 20th Century Fox's X-Men: Apocalypse wasn't expected to win two weeks in a row. Three newcomers hit theaters this summer weekend, with Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Warner Bros.' Me Before You and Universal's Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping arriving in wide release. As expected, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows came out on top, but it was still much lower than projected, winning with an estimated $35.2 million.

Box Office Mojo reports that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows had the widest debut this weekend, opening in 4,071 theaters, although that count still came in under the 4,153 theater roll-out of X-Men: Apocalypse, which dropped to second place with $22.3 million, a 66.1% drop from its debut. Me Before You took third place with $18.5 million, opening in 2,704 theaters, »

Synopsis:

As Shredder joins forces with mad scientist Baxter Stockman and henchmen Bebop and Rocksteady to take over the world, the Turtles must confront an even greater nemesis: the notorious Krang.

90s cartoon nostalgia seems to be the recipe for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, following up on a somewhat disastrous reboot that tinkered with the origin story of the heroes in a half-shell, along with presenting them as grotesquely hideous over-sized CGI monstrosities. Yes, I realize the word ‘mutant’ is in their description, but they look like anthropomorphic turtles that are abusing steroids.

In the wake of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hitting the big screen back in 2014, very few critics were asking for more where it came from. General audiences, however, made the film a smash hit success at the box office, so it was only a matter of time before those heroes in a half shell returned to do battle with villains much more outlandish than The Shredder. In the interest of full disclosure, I’m one of those few critics who was asking for more back in 2014. And I sure am glad we got it.

Original April O'Neil Judith Hoag Cut From Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows

Set photos during Teenage Mutant Ninja's Turtles: Out of the Shadows' on location shoot in NYC revealed that Megan Fox's April O'Neil would  share screen time with the original April O'Neil from the 1990 live-action film, Judith Hoag.  Details on Hoag's role were never revealed but cryptic tweets  last May pretty much confirmed Hoag's cameo and encounter with the Turtles.  Perhaps her character will show up in deleted scenes or an extended cut?   Teenage Mutant Ninja's Turtles: Out of the Shadows is expected to narrowly edge out X-Men: Apocalypse for the #1 spot at the domestic box office this weekend but is currently tracking to gross only half of the 2014 film's $65 million weekend haul. Starring Megan Fox, Stephen Amell, Johnny Knoxville, Tony Shalhoub, Alan Ritchson, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard, Brian Tee, Will Arnett, Gary Anthony Williams, and WWE Superstar Sheamus, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows hits Us theaters today. »

IMAX has released a new poster for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows, and it features the heroes in a half shell alongside human allies Casey Jones and April O’Neil.

Despite receiving a mixed response in 2014, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles grossed just shy of $500 million worldwide, so the fact that we’re getting this sequel is hardly a surprise. However, adding so many fan-favourite characters and hopefully an acknowledgement of what didn’t work in the first instalment will with any luck go some way in ensuring that the follow-up fares a little better.

Based on the reviews for this one so far, it is a success in that respect, thought still not necessarily what you might call a “good” movie. Of course, like the Transformers franchise for example, this isn’t the kind »

Second Opinion – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, 2016.

Synopsis:

The Turtles face off against Shredder, who this time has help from genetically-engineered henchmen and intergalactic villain Krang.

I have a confession to make – I saw the last Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie at the cinema Twice. Not because I thought it was great, but because it was, for me, the perfect kind of terrible (I mean, how can you truly hate a film that contains the line “Drain every single drop of their blood – even if it kills them”?). As someone who grew up loving the Tmnt cartoon, the arcade game and the action figures, I should have been heartbroken and offended by the soulless, »

[Review] Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

2 June 2016 11:58 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles originated in 1984 as a self-published comic book by two guys in New Hampshire, intended as a one-off parody of Cerebus, New Mutants, and the work of Frank Miller. More than 30 years on, there have been multiple comic series, four TV show adaptations, numerous video games, countless toys, and now six movies. It’s a bona-fide cultural phenomenon. And yet all you have to do is recite the name to remind yourself that it was all intended as a joke. Nostalgia is a helluva thing.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows not only recognizes this, but directly exploits it. Nearly all the hallmarks of the 1987 Tmnt cartoon (the biggest millennial touchstone for the franchise), are present here, including several that have never appeared in any of the theatrical films before. And this may indeed win over fans, going by the grown men at my screening »

Film Review: ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows’

2 June 2016 12:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The heroes in a half shell return for more halfhearted fun in “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.” Every bit as noisy, brain-numbing and lowbrow as its predecessor, the Michael Bay production never strays from basic blockbuster formula. It’s fast food entertainment destined for a short run atop the box office charts and an even shorter lifespan in the pop culture zeitgeist.

Although the franchise has remained active in animation and video games through the years, the heroic quartet named after famed Renaissance painters — Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo — went dormant in live action films for two decades, until 2014’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” resurrected the phenomenon. At the time, some longtime fans took issue with reinventing the turtles as motion capture-animated heroes, especially in the context of a sleek, soulless, steel-crushing action extravaganza à la Bay’s “Transformers” productions. But worldwide audiences didn’t seem to mind one bit, »

Review: A new director brings some welcome energy and charm to 'Turtles' sequel

1 June 2016 2:25 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Dave Green’s first film, Earth To Echo, had some mighty familiar DNA. You could tell that he was a fan of ‘80s Amblin’ films and that he’d absorbed the lessons of the film on a nearly molecular level like many of the film nerd kids who grew up on those movies. More than anything, he got the relationships between the kids right in that film, and it appears he carried that skill set over to a franchise that I have very little personal fondness for, resulting in what may well be the most consistently fun live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie ever made. It’s easy to dismiss someone’s fondness for something as pure nostalgia, but it’s also reductive and, in many cases, not why someone loves something. I may not personally be a Turtles fan, but I know enough of them (and have fathered a »
