[Yuletide Terrors] Day 24: Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toymaker

24 December 2014 7:00 AM, PST | Destroy the Brain | See recent Destroy the Brain news »

Throughout the month of December, we will be highlighting a film a day that has some tie into the holiday somehow. Some titles will be obvious, others won’t be. Some films will be good and, again, others won’t be. However, we think all titles are worth your time whether to give you chills inside your home or to make you drink more eggnog until you puke laughing.

Late one night young Derek (William Thorne) awakes to someone knocking at the front door. A present left on the porch ends up strangling his dad. Derek has gone into shock and won’t speak. His mom Sarah (Jane Higginson) hopes maybe a toy will cheer him up. They go to the toy store owned by Joe Petto (Mickey Rooney) and his son Pino (Brian Bremer). Old Joe has got some weird toys, like Larry the Larvae. Noah (Tracy Fraim) has »

Simon Pegg Will Play The Devil in The Gathering

13 December 2014 12:02 PM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Simon Pegg playing the Devil?! Sounds good to me! The actor has been cast in a horror comedy called The Gathering, and it sounds awesome! I never thought I’d see Pegg as the Devil, but now that it’s out in the universe it makes complete sense. The movie is being directed by Jon Keeyes, and he talked to Fangoria about the project. This is how he describes the fantastic story that he’s going to tell:

“On Halloween night, the devil brings together Mary Shelley, H.P. Lovecraft, Bram Stoker, and Edgar Allan Poe in purgatory to tell their best untold tales, the idea being that whoever has the best story of the night gets to leave purgatory forever ... We've tried to put a spin on the essence of the stories they're most well-known for. So Stoker tells a vampire tale, but it's not about Dracula. H.P. Lovecraft's »

Simon Pegg to play the Devil in The Gathering

11 December 2014 12:38 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Simon Pegg is to head up a starry horror comedy about Mary Shelley, Lovecraft, Bram Stoker and Edgar Allan Poe...

Horror legend Jeffrey Combs is well known for his collaborations with director Stuart Gordon, which resulted in such wildly entertaining films as Re-Animator, From Beyond and The Pit And The Pendulum.

Combs is set to star in The Gathering, which sounds like the kind of film he'd make with Gordon. In it, Combs will play Edgar Allan Poe - a role he's inhabited twice for Gordon, first in TV's The Masters Of Horror: The Black Cat, and a second time in a stage production called Nevermore.

The Gathering will be directed by Jon Keeyes, whose previous films include Phobia (2013) and Fall Down Dead (2007). Essentially an anthology film, the premise behind The Gathering is quite ingenious: the Devil (who'll be played by Simon Pegg) gathers together a group of famous »

Monstervision: The Saturday Drive-In

24 November 2014 5:40 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

“This is Joe Bob Briggs reminding you that the Drive-In will Never Die!”

In 1993, Monstervision on TNT in America, was mostly a program that aired old horror movies and science fiction with the occasional hosting from magicians Penn and Teller. During the early nineties, many cable channels hadn’t yet solidified their formats, and horror hosts were still ways to fill late night television since most channels couldn’t afford original programming. During that time, esteemed and controversial film critic John Bloom (known by his pen name Joe Bob Briggs), finished his tenure at the Movie Channel, which had also began changing its format.

Briggs was unfortunately released from his acclaimed show where he introduced uncut movies for his fans with his color commentary book ending the movies. The prologues and closers often featured comedy with the Briggs character, when he wasn’t interviewing genre favorites like Linnea Quigley. He »

Review: Evilspeak (Blu-ray)

20 June 2014 2:25 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Evilspeak wasn’t a film I grew up with, although it was one of those movies that I had always heard a lot about- mostly due to its ‘outrageously graphic’ content, which a good portion of ended up on the cutting room floor back in 1981. The cult classic has finally been resurrected in high definition, courtesy of Scream Factory, in a presentation befitting all of Clint Howard’s Satan-fueled nerd rage and gory aftermath that followed.

Howard plays Stanley Coopersmith, an orphan who is constantly bullied at the military academy that he is forced to attend after his parents were killed in an automobile accident. Stanley is the very definition of awkward, which makes it all the easier for his classmates (and even teachers) to pick on him and torment him mercilessly. While cleaning out the chapel’s basement on campus one afternoon, Stanley stumbles upon an ancient spell book »

‘Evilspeak’ Blu-ray Review (Scream Factory)

27 May 2014 3:05 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Stars: Clint Howard, R.G. Armstrong, Joe Cortese, Claude Earl Jones, Haywood Nelson, Don Stark, Charles Tyner, Hamilton Camp, Louie Gravance, Jim Greenleaf, Lynn Hancock, Loren Lester | Written by Eric Weston, Joseph Garofalo | Directed by Eric Weston

From the 1970’s and 80’s to now, one thing will always be a sad constant: bullies will always exist. And there will always be that weak-willed teenager who is the constant target of these awful people. But, there’s always this fulfillment that comes about from films like Patrick and Carrie, that the bullied kid has a tendency to lash out at those who oppress them with otherworldly forces. These kids search outward for any escape and that leads them to some very dark corners. In the case of Evilspeak, that dark corner is The Devil himself, and the results are typically gory and fantastically outrageous.

Put simply, Evilspeak, is about a thousand pounds »

First Look At Bryce Dallas Howard In Official Jurassic World Set Images

Photographer, Chuck Zlotnick, has snapped some great images from the set of Jurassic World. One of them includes Clint Howard's niece, Bryce Dallas Howard. She's also the daughter of Ron Howard, who directed Rush. Let's be honest, Clint Howard is the big star of this family affair, right? Anyway, we also have a Jurassic Park jeep, which should remind us of the good times we felt after viewing the first film, and hopefully make us forget the disappointment of the sequels.  Lastly, an image of a chair looking over the gorgeous Hawaiian set.  “Yesterday I was under a construction crane with Chris Pratt, covered with dirt, eyeballing the exact height of the dinosaur trying to kill him,” Colin Trevorrow told EW. “We both cracked up laughing. Sometimes you just have to stop and let the joy take over.” Jurassic World is being directed by Colin Trevorrow, from a screenplay »

That Guy From That Movie: 10 Unsung Character Actors

21 April 2014 10:25 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Much like any business model the movie industry has a distinct hierarchy, especially when it comes to acting. At the top, you have the A-listers; famous names that can open a movie and put butts in seats. Then you have the respected thespians that are renowned for a solid body of work built up over a number of years. Then there are recognizable character actors, a trusted presence frequently used to bolster an ensemble cast. Then, there are ‘those guys’.

You know the ones; actors that you’ve seen cropping up in countless movies over the years in smaller supporting roles, but never taking the lead part or giving a showy performance. Plenty of people will know the face but not the name, but when they appear on-screen you’ll say ‘it’s that guy from that movie!’. These hard-working journeymen are some of the unsung heroes of cinema, and »
