Why Making a Great 'Zootopia' Sequel is a Nearly Impossible Task

9 June 2016 5:24 AM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

This year's Zootopia was quite the pleasant surprise. Yes, in the past eight years or so, with the involvement of John Lasseter, Disney has been upping their animated game tremendously. From films like Bolt and The Princess And The Frog to Wreck-it Ralph and Tangled, they've certainly managed to make an amazing comeback. With that in mind, I went into Zootopia with a certain expectation of quality: I expected great characters, a tight script, some funny jokes, a decent amount of heart, and beautiful animation.

The movie more than delivered on those expectations without breaking a sweat. But what I did not expect was for Zootopia to be a well-told social commentary that brings awareness to racial stereotyping. From the get-go, that's what the movie set itself up as, and as I got deeper and deeper into the runtime, it became all the more clear that this was a bona fide classic. »

Zootopia

Directed by: Byron Howard, Rich Moore, Jared Bush

Cast: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba

Running Time: 1 hr 48 mins

Rating: PG

Due Out: June 7, 2016

Plot (courtesy of Disney Home Entertainment): Directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and produced by Clark Spencer (“Wreck-It-Ralph,” “Lilo & Stitch”), the progressive mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a melting pot where animals from every habitat live side by side and “anyone can be anything.” But when new rabbit police officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives in town she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of tough, hulking animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack an unsolved, challenging case even if it means working with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery. But the »

Blu-ray Review – Zootopia (2016)

Zootopia, 2016.

Directed by Byron Howard, Rich Moore, and Jared Bush.

Featuring the voices talents of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Bonnie Hunt, J.K. Simmons, Jenny Slate, Nate Torrence, Don Lake and Tommy Chong.

Synopsis:

Disney Animation does it again with a story that treads familiar thematic ground but serves up a fresh, inventive plot that keeps viewers young and old engaged. This Blu-ray + DVD set also includes a satisfying set of bonus materials.

When Disney bought Pixar several years ago, I was among the fans who feared that the House of Mouse might squash Pixar’s innovative approach and turn the animation leader into a studio tasked with churning out endless sequels and rehashes. And then a funny thing happened: While Pixar is still capable of producing unique new stories like Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur, the studio has started to rely more heavily on sequels, and Disney »

As Zootropolis crosses $1bn at the global box office, we'll be heading back there on one screen or other in the future...

Zootropolis has proven to be a huge hit for Disney, with the animated flick grossing $1bn in cinemas worldwide. Unsurprisingly, then, plans are afoot for another visit. Co-directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore admit to being just as attached to the city of anthropomorphic mammals they created, and with an overwhelming fan reaction to a film its creators can’t wait to expand on, there’s going the inevitable 'what’s next?' question.

“The fan response is a huge help for that kind of thing” says Howard. “I think we all loved the world so much and got so attached to the characters, that we actually got a little sad when the film finally came out [because] we felt like, well, we’re kind of done with it. »

Zootopia Now Stands As Second Largest Original Movie In History

30 May 2016 12:24 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Featuring a cracking voice cast, lush animation and an entertaining story at its heart, Zootopia not only proved to be one of this year’s early crowd-pleasers, it also soared close to $1 billion at the international box office.

That’s an impressive tally as is, but what really fired Byron Howard and Rich Moore’s animation into the history books was the fact that Zootopia stands as a successful movie, yes, but also an original one. In a report by Forbes, the outlet reveals that Howard and Moore’s adventure is now second only to James Cameron’s Avatar in Hollywood’s ranking of highest-grossing original movies; that is, feature films “not based on a television show, a comic book, a novel, or a stage play.”

This, coupled with the barnstorming success of Captain America: Civil War has ensured Disney’s box office haul for the year is nearing $4 billion in total. »

Zootropolis (aka Zootopia) movie review: creature feature

24 March 2016 8:14 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Marvelous. A bouncy comedy mystery adventure parable in a fantasy world meticulously and cleverly conceived and gorgeously realized. I adore this movie. I’m “biast” (pro): mostly loving Disney these days

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

One of the things I really loved about Madagascar was the unspoken metaphor about city living that underpinned it: that cities are civilizing. That cities are places that even out the differences between us and somehow allow us to coexist in relative harmony. I mean, look: Madagascar’s heroes were a lion and a zebra, predator and prey in the wild but best of friends within the cultivated confines of the urban jungle who wouldn’t even dream of cannibalism… until, pointedly and yet still only in passing, they are removed from the civilizing influence of city life.

And now someone has gone »

Interview: Rich Moore and Byron Howard for ‘Zootropolis’

24 March 2016 5:06 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Finally hitting U.K. cinemas this week is the superb Walt Disney animation Zootropolis. We saw the film a little while back and well in love with it immediately. The feature is directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore, and we caught up with them when they visited London a little while ago to talk about their film.

The film’s humour isn’t childish – it’s more juvenile and even for adults. Was this always the intention?

Byron Howard: It started that way because we were doing a movie about a contemporary world. A lot of the humour that we find as adults making the film comes from these parallels that we find with our own reality. The sloth thing is a good example. It’s not necessarily something that a kid would get because they probably haven’t been to the Dmv, but every adult on the planet gets it. »

The directors of Zootropolis on the big, late change to their film, how 1/24th of a second matters, and Jason Statham

Zootropolis finally makes its bow in UK cinemas this weekend, and it’s been well worth the wait. It continues an astonishing run from Walt Disney Animation Studios, and we were lucky enough to spend some time with its directors, Rich Moore (Rm) and Byron Howard (Bh), to chat about the film.

Here’s how it went…

Can you take us mere mortals inside a Walt Disney Animation Studios pitch meeting, where a project like this begins? Where you take four or five ideas to John Lasseter? Is it as brutal as it sounds?

Bh: He’s not as brutal as you might think!

Rm: John’s mom was an art teacher. So John really has that talent of picking out something nice about everything that someone does. »

Movie Review – Zootropolis (2016)

Zootopia, 2016.

Directed by Byron Howard, Rich Moore and Jared Bush.

Featuring the voice talents of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Nate Torrence, Jenny Slate, Bonnie Hunt, Don Lake, Octavia Spencer, Tommy Chong, Alan Tudyk, Maurice Lamarche, J.K. Simmons, and Shakira.

Synopsis:

In a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy.

I keep falling in love with animated anthropomorphic bunnies. Babs Bunny in Space Jam, the rabbit in the Cadbury’s advert, and now Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) from Zootropolis. It’s a pure, romantic love. Nothing sexual (yet). The weird thing is, I never got the appeal of Hugh Hefner’s ‘Playboy Bunnies’. The whole costume-on-a-human stuff comes off a bit creepy. They’ve gotta be a full animated, anthropomorphic bunny or I’m out.

Anyway.

Zootropolis review: “Disney’s best animated effort for years…”

Zootropolis review: One of Disney’s best films for many years. Zootropolis review

Zootropolis review by Paul Heath. Disney load up their gun and fire their first animated film of the year. Strangely for the animation studio side of the massive Disney empire, excluding anything from Pixar, they are choosing to release two movies this year. Later we’ll get the Moana, the Hawaii-set adventure, but first, here’s Zootropolis, an original tale that is going by different names across the planet (it’s being referred to as Zootopia in the Us).

The story revolves around the character of Judy Hopps, an energetic bunny from the suburbs who is intent on moving to the bright lights of Zootropolis to become a police officer. There are many hurdles in her way, and the budding cop must overcome them all to become the first rabbit to join the police force. With the »
