At the time of his death was regarded as the dean of American playwrights.
Began as a journalist working for several New York newspapers.
His wife was a sister of Sir Charles Wyndham.
Two months after he died, hundreds of actors, writers and theater managers gathered at the New Lyceum Theater in New York to pay tribute. A telegram from President Teddy Roosevelt was read praising Howard's body of work.
