The host and producer of Like It Is, an influential public affairs show that aired on New York’s Wabc, died today, about eight months after suffering from a stroke. He was 80. Noble joined the ABC flagship station in 1967, and soon anchored its weekend newscasts. Like It Is, which debuted in 1968, created the country’s largest collection of programs and documentaries on African-Americans. He interviewed newsmakers including South Africa President Nelson Mandela and Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe; entertainers Bill Cosby, Harry Belafonte and Lena Horne; sports stars Muhammad Ali and Arthur Ashe; and political figures such as Jesse Jackson and  Louis Farrakhan. His memoir, Black Is The Color Of My TV Tube, was published in 1981. “Gil Noble’s life and work had a profound effect on our society and culture,” Wabc General Manager Dave Davis says. “His contributions are a part of history and will be remembered for years to come. »

Elaine Paige on Lena Horne in 'The Lady and Her Music'

1 April 2012 7:00 AM, PDT | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

When I was a young singing actress, there were a few artists I wanted to emulate-Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, and Lena Horne, to name just three. For me, Horne stood out. Her voice had a certain quality that I loved; she had a freedom and an easy style with her phrasing. But most of all, I loved the way she told the story. The lyrics were obviously important to her. You would believe every word of any song she sang. It was as if she were reliving her own story. She was a consummate actress, which is what set her apart. I had been listening to her for many years, and in 1984 she came to England with her triumphant one-woman show "The Lady and Her Music." I managed to get hold of a ticket! They were like gold dust, and I was going to see my idol sing live at the. »

Internal Conflict & Streep's Third Oscar

27 February 2012 5:19 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

My own personal history with the Oscar stretches back to the early 80s but there's so much self-mythologizing about it that I sometimes get confused about when I finally figured out What It Was. I know with certainty that the first ceremony I was aware of was in Spring 1983 because I had seen Gandhi, Tootsie and E.T. with my parents. But if I watched I remember nothing from that ceremony. My first sure Oscar ceremony memory was watching Shirley Maclaine win Best Actress for Terms of Endearment (which I hadn't seen). I remember being excited for Maclaine who I already loved but I don't remember why (probably TV airings of musicals?) and I remember being super excited by Meryl's Silkwood clip. Before I ever knew Meryl Streep as an actress -- her movies were always rated R and I wasn't allowed to see them -- I knew her as The Great Oscar Winning Actress. »

Remembering Whitney: Watch Her TV Debut

12 February 2012 7:48 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

As we look back on the life of the late Whitney Houston, who died at the age of 48 on Feb. 11, it's nearly impossible to choose her best performance. But in the video above, take a look at her first.

On April 29, 1985, a 21-year-old Houston made her national television debut on "The Merv Griffin Show." In an off-the-shoulder gown, she stepped onto the stage with clenched hands to sing a cover of "Home" from "The Wiz."

Then-Arista Records head Clive Davis introduced Houston to world on the late night show. He'd seen her at a New York nightclub, signed her and helped her become one of the biggest selling artists in music history.

Before she belted the song -- which was originally sung on the stage by Stephanie Mills and Diana Ross in the 1978 film adaptation -- Davis sung Houston's praises to Griffin before anyone knew her name.
