Following his work on The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), MGM briefly considered him for a lead role in its 1959 re-make of Ben-Hur (1959), the roles which were ultimately filled by Charlton Heston, portraying Judah Ben-Hur, and Stephen Boyd, portraying Messala, and like in "Kwai," would also have been co-starring with Jack Hawkins.
