Ted Hope Inaugurates Filmlinc Series With Mark Jackson’S “Without”

4 March 2012 7:28 PM, PST | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

Producer Ted Hope, who has been running a regular independent film screening series at Goldcrest for the last few years, is moving uptown — he’s the inaugural curator of the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s monthly Indie Night showcase. And for the series opening film, he’s picked a favorite of ours here at Filmmaker: Mark Jackson’s Without. On the basis of this first feature, Jackson was selected as one of our 2011 25 New Faces. In his write-up, Brandon Harris wrote:

Comprised of shots that make you feel as if you’re glimpsing the most private of moments, a fly on the wall for one young woman’s haunting meltdown, Without may suggest some of the greats of world cinema (he is willing to site the influence of Michelangelo Antonioni and Marco Ferrari, filmmakers he ironically missed out on while studying in Italy), but Jackson has little interest in quoting them. »

24 Indie Filmmaking Tips Tweeted By the Legendary Ted Hope

22 February 2012 3:11 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

A few weeks ago, legendary indie producer Ted Hope (21 Grams, American Splendor, Martha Marcy May Marlene, and 50 other movies) spoke at the Athena Film Festival as part of their “From Script to Screen, Producing Films in Tough Times” panel. He was the token male amongst the solid producing presence of Lisa Cortes (Precious), Susan Cartsonis (No Reservations), Nekisa Cooper (Pariah), and Mary Jane Skalski (Win Win). With considerable experience working outside the studio world, they offered advice and encouragement, and Hope was nice enough to spread it to the world at large through his twitter feed. He was unavailable to clear up who should be credited for which piece of advice, but it’s a safe bet to assume that the panel agreed on these points at-large. Not only are they essential for aspiring filmmakers, they also provide a window into the world for movie fans. No matter what side of the screen you’re on, there »

Liv Tyler Joins Director Ti West's The Side Effect

20 January 2012 7:08 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Since making his debut with 2005's The Roost, writer-director Ti West has been devoted to making horror movies. The Innkeepers, West's first attempt at a ghost story, opens in theaters on Feb. 3rd (though it is already available on VOD), and the horror anthology V/H/S, which includes a segment directed by West, will debut at the Sundance Film Festival this weekend. Showing no signs of slowing down, West has cast Liv Tyler in the lead role of his next project, titled The Side Effect.

Deadline reports that Tyler will play Catherine Rigby, a woman who spends "several months alone in space as an experimental subject for a global pharmaceutical company and finds herself inexplicably pregnant." It won't be Tyler's first horror movie, having appeared in 2008's The Strangers, but she said she was drawn to the project because of West, calling the director "a super-talented exciting young filmmaker. »

Sundance 2012: Wish You Were Here Review

20 January 2012 2:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Many things have changed in the 5 years since I last visited the Sundance Film Festival in Park City Ut.  The crowd has changed, the hot button issues are different, and there seems to be less of an emphasis on what awesome celebrity will be present during the 10 day event.  However the one thing that has remained the same to this day, is the festival’s insatiable need to bombard its audience members with emotionally charged films.  And while the rest of the world was watching the opening night premiere of Queen of Versailles, I instead encountered such a film with Wish You Were Here.

If you were to judge this movie just by its first few frames, you would most likely end up pegging the film as some sort of feel good Dramedy.  The audience is shown gorgeous shots of blue skies over a sandy paradise.  Our main characters are »

The Side Effect: Liv Tyler Cast as Lead by Ti West

19 January 2012 12:49 AM, PST | Film-Book | See recent Film-Book news »

Liv Tyler has been cast as the lead in Ti West‘s The Side Effect. Presumably out in 2014, Ti West’s The Side Effect will be a sci-fi thriller set for the most part in outer space. Liv Tyler is the first principal cast member hired for the film.

On Liv Tyler’s character in the film and The Side Effect‘s basic plot:

In The Side Effect, Tyler will play Catherine Rigby, a woman who spends several months alone in space as an experimental subject for a global pharmaceutical company, and finds herself inexplicably pregnant. Paranoia and hysteria reign as the truth behind conception grows more elusive and she remains stranded in space.

The plot sounds very interesting (with a dash of Splice and Solaris in there) and I am looking forward to what West does with it.

Liv Tyler Encounters Pharmacy Dangers of the Third Kind in Ti West’s ‘The Side Effect’

18 January 2012 5:21 PM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

Liv Tyler is the latest name to join Ti West’s next feature film titled The Side Effects. The film is not to be confused with Steven Soderbergh’s similarly titled film. Both with explore the dangers of pharmaceutical abuse, but the only difference is that in West’s movie, it will explore that danger in space. The actress will play as Catherine Rigby, a woman who spends several months alone in space as an experimental subject for a global pharmaceutical company, and somehow becomes inexplicably pregnant.

Ted Hope and Peter Phok, who helped produce Ti West’s indie horror films The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers, will produce The Side Effect as well. Hope, who will reunite with West and Liv Tyler (who appeared in the Hope produced Super) had nothing but positive things to say about West.

Liv Tyler Will Star in Ti West’s Sci-fi Thriller ‘The Side Effect’

18 January 2012 12:28 PM, PST | Destroy the Brain | See recent Destroy the Brain news »

I was somewhat on the fence regarding director Ti West upon my first viewing of The Roost and House of the Devil.  My initial reaction was that both films revealed a director who not only took his time with his story-telling but was someone who could potentially fall into a nostalgia rut that becomes more obsessed with making films that harken back to the films we may have grown up watching on late-night television in the 80′s.  After revisiting both of them in the past year I was able to appreciate the technical way West approaches each shot and the precise editing used to create atmosphere.  He is clearly a man who knows what he’s doing.  My appreciation for the director swelled even more following his screening of his most recent film, The Innkeepers (now on VOD), at Fantastic Fest this past September.  Now the young director is following »
