Since visiting the film festival in Tromsø, Norway in 1994, where he became romantically involved (since separated) he has lived and worked in Norway, Australia, the UK, and for a short time the USA. He speaks Norwegian, but prefers English.

Starred as "Elling" in a Sydney version of the successful Norwegian play by the same name.
