Madiba review – Nelson Mandela miniseries almost lives up to the legend

Kevin Hooks’s sprawling life story tries to load as much as it can into its three episodes starring Laurence Fishburne, but its completist approach feels thin

Trying to capture the essence of Nelson Mandela on screen is a tough gig. Just ask Idris Elba. In fact, for American or British actors, trying to do justice to any African leader or public figure can prove to be a surefire way for critics to question your likeness (or lack of it), strange-mannered accent and motives in portraying a continent’s most beloved sons. After Morgan Freeman, Danny Glover and Sidney Poitier, Laurence Fishburne is the next actor in the Madiba hot seat, playing Mandela from his mid-20s all the way up to his later years in a three-part miniseries. It’s part of Bet’s black history month offering and sees the channel expand from their usual entertainment brief and

‘Madiba’ Review: Bet’s Nelson Mandela Miniseries Is Powerful & Insightful

Just more than three years after his death, Nelson Mandela may still be too dominant, too regal and too multi-faceted a figure of history for any one book, film or television miniseries to grasp. But Bet's Lawrence Fishburne-starring Madiba certainly makes a powerful and often successful effort out of the task. Debuting tomorrow and running February 8 and February 15, the Kevin Hooks-directed Madiba, shot in South Africa, has its flaws. But, as I say in my video review…

25 great action films that are 90 minutes or under

facebook

twitter

google+

Want a quality action film, but you only have an hour and a half? Step this way...

Looking back over the genre, action films definitely haven’t suffered from the trend to make everything longer. They’ve always been pretty long, regularly clocking in at over two hours. Perhaps because of all the slo-mo? But while the sweet spot for action classics seems to be the 100-110 minute mark, there are those that have cut the genre right down to basics, and succeeded all the more for it.

Below is my pick of 25 great action films 90 minutes or under. Even more so than other genres, action crosses many other films - picking a pure ‘action’ flick is all but impossible. So below I’ve chosen films that retain action sequences as their main narrative device, and keep the action at the heart of the movie, rather than as a extra.

Agents of Shield, Ep. 2.16, “Afterlife”: The Dead Live Again

Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 16: “Afterlife”

Written by Craig Titley

Directed by Kevin Hooks

Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC

After Bobbi and Gonzalez’s big hero moment and Skye’s escape in “One Door Closes”, “Afterlife” is set up to be a bit of a let-down, or at least a slowdown by comparison. There are plenty of good hero moments, like the return of Deathlok, and Fitz-Simmons pulling the wool over Bobbi’s eyes. Even with these moments, the episode’s focus on Skye slows everything down to introduce Afterlife and fit in lots of exposition from Lincoln, played by guest star Luke Mitchell (The Tomorrow People).

It is difficult to gauge Mitchell’s performance as Lincoln based only on “Afterlife”, because as Skye’s guide in this world, most of his dialogue is exposition. The large majority of his scenes with Skye are just Skye walking

For most people, high school was a terrible, excruciating process. Revisiting it holds less appeal than a root canal, broken collar bone, or both. For the most part, it’s a traumatic experience that, for the lucky few, is shaken off sometime during college. Most people are cursed by their memories for years; who in their right mind would ever want to relive that unpleasant part of their lives? High school is one of the many things in life that is much better off left in the special ditch in your memories. Wait, there are what: high school reunions? Agents of Shield, Ep. 1.11, “The Magical Place”: Beating a Dead Coulson

Agents of Shield, Season 1, Episode 11, “The Magical Place”

Written by Paul Zbyszewski and Brent Fletcher

Directed by Kevin Hooks

In an early scene of “The Magical Place”, Fitz yells out to Simmons, his better half/Wonder Twin, “It’s time, Simmons. Embrace the change.” It is a strange bit of dialogue that feels more like a message to the audience of Agents of Shield than a line meant to move the plot along. For a show that is still in its first season, Agents of Shield has been oddly stagnant. There are only two episodes left in the show’s initial 13-episode order, and the mystery of what happened to Agent Coulson has still not been solved. Fitz is signaling to the audience that change is coming and to brace themselves for revelations, but the question is whether those revelations are too little and too late.

“The Magical Place” is
