Tracking Shot October 2010: 2 Days In New York, Alps, Rampart, Shanghai, I Love You

1 October 2010 1:05 PM, PDT | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

At the beginning of every month, Ioncinema.com's "Tracking Shot" features a handful of projects that we feel are worth signaling out and that are moments away from lensing. This October we find the very last batch of titles that could be potentially ready for next May (I see a pair of films mentioned below that are possible Cannes birth qualifiers) and we find our usual mix of items: from mid-range indie budget flicks (4 million to 8 million range) to the pricey popcorn films.  In the batch of seven, we have a pair of first time helmer Shawn Lawrence Otto. Otto wrote House of Sand and Fog (liked the themes, not the execution) and gets to work with a solid pairing in Brolin and Swank - what emotional depths will Dreams of a Dying Heart attain in the home from war storyline is my biggest concern. Matthew McConaughey Added To Bernie

30 September 2010 5:46 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Richard Linklater already has one former collaborator in the ensemble for his new dark comedy Bernie, in the shape of Jack “School of Rock” Black. And now he’s adding another veteran from his past work with the casting of Matthew “Dazed and Confuzed” McConaughey. Bernie follows the misadventures of a mortician (Black) who is something of a Renaissance man and community leader in the small town of Carthage, Texas. He somehow develops a friendship with a local rich, difficult widow (Shirley MacLaine), but then he accidentally kills her. Cue comic shenanigans as he tries to convince everyone she’s still alive. Now he’ll have a serious thorn in his side, with McConaughey playing the town’s ambitious district attorney, a man who’s always looking for ways to win over the voters and who targets the suspicious circumstances around Bernie and his not-so-lively friend.Linklater co-wrote the script »

'Bernie' Will Reunite Jack Black and Richard Linklater

6 August 2010 5:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The news spread quickly around Austin film circles today via a casting call notice on the Short Film Texas website: Richard Linklater was starting casting for his new feature film Bernie, which will be shot in East Texas and Austin this fall. The film will reunite him with actor Jack Black, who co-starred in Linklater's School of Rock back in 2003. Bernie will also star Shirley MacLaine. Variety confirmed the news this afternoon. Castle Rock and Mandalay Pictures are producing the film.

Bernie's storyline is a far cry from School of Rock or Linklater's most recent film, Me and Orson Welles. It's based on a 1998 Texas Monthly article by Skip Hollandsworth, "MIdnight in the Garden of East Texas," about Bernie Tiede and the Texas town of Carthage. Small-town undertaker Tiede, whom I assume will be played by Black in the movie, confessed in 1997 to murdering his companion, Marjorie Nugent, "the richest »

Jack Black and Shirley MacLaine Topline Linklater's 'Bernie'

6 August 2010 12:15 PM, PDT | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Richard Linklater is reuniting with the lead of his 2003 comedy (The School of Rock) and has tapped Shirley MacLaine to play a wealthy widow in Bernie -- a dark comedy that is currently casting stand-ins and local actors ("interesting" looking folk) for the small town setting of Huntsville, East Texas. Jack Black would take on the role of one Bernie Tiede, who transformed the town of Carthage with his generosity and who then, to the disbelief of Carthage residents, was arrested for murder.. Back in June, ThePlaylist interviewed the filmmaker and found out that he was putting a decade old script he worked on back on the burner - "it's my 'Fargo' in East Texas, where I group up, so it's crazy local with fifty characters. It's about a funeral home assistant who befriends this old lady. It's kind of a true crime story." While this will not come close »
