TV review: One Night; A Very British Holiday; Angels of Mersey

26 March 2012 4:05 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

One Night is a low-key British version of Falling Down

It takes some confidence to use the title One Night (BBC1), with its direct echoes of David Nicholls' global bestselling book One Day. Even if the Hollywood spin-off movie was rather less successful. But One Night is no bitter-sweet rom-com. If anything, the first episode of this four-part drama to be screened throughout the week, most resembled a low-key British version of Joel Schumacher's Falling Down.

After a brief opening scene of a young boy handing in a gun at the local nick to establish that something really bad has happened, we cut back in time to Ted – a struggling kitchen salesman – doing the shopping for a dinner party he's having for his boss. His phone rings. He keeps losing a signal but the message is clear; a deal he thought was done has just been cancelled. He »

Atheist Foundation returns to advertising with Woody Allen quote: ‘If God exists, I hope he has a good excuse’

15 March 2012 6:09 PM, PDT | Encore Magazine | See recent Encore Magazine news »

The Atheist Foundation of Australia has returned to advertising with a bus-side campaign that is running in Melbourne.

The non-believing group has quoted Woody Allen in the ad, which reads ‘If God exists, I hope he has a good excuse’.

The campaign has been timed for the run up to the 2012 Global Atheist Convention, which is being marketed as “A celebration of reason”.

Commenting on the campaign, the president of the Atheist Foundation, David Nicholls, said: “Woody Allen’s words encapsulate the thoughts of the freethinking community and the sneaking suspicions of a growing number of religious people as well. Considering the immensity of the unnecessary death, pain and suffering on the planet, an alleged all-powerful and all-loving god certainly has a lot to answer for.”

Nicholls said that while Woody Allen may have been born into the Jewish faith, he was a “dead set atheist”.

Exclusive Clip from the One Day DVD

21 February 2012 12:00 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Universal knew exactly what they were doing when then set their sights on a Valentine’s Day release for Lone Scherfig’s adaptation of David Nicholls’ much heralded One Day, and we’ve got our hands on an exclusive clip from the DVD to entice those of you who haven’t succumbed to the charms of Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess.

The premise of revisiting a couple on a single day over the course of twenty or so years isn’t as trite as it sounds and Scherfig makes the most of a decent spark from the film’s leads.

Here’s a handy synopsis,

Following the story of Emma (Hathaway) and Dexter (Sturgess), who meet on the day of their university graduation, July 15th 1988, the film catches up with the pair on the same day for the next 20 years as they experience the highs and lows of adulthood both together and apart. »

One Day DVD Review

10 February 2012 3:32 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Lone Scherfig

Cast: Jim Sturgess, Anne Hathaway, Rafe Spall, Patricia Clarkson

Certificate: 12A

Running Time: 108 minutes

I have had a near year long love affair with a story called One Day. It was born out of a fleeting moment in a book store at Gatwick Airport shortly before I left for sunny climbs back last May, and ever since I have cherished the time that we have spent together… sitting by the pool sipping Margueritas in Greece, on the beach washing the waves crash into the sands, and the many nights enjoyed tucked up in bed… It has been a releationship that has been quite turbulent. Who could forget the time when that moment happened in the rain in that novel, and me breaking down in tears poolside as a result. You went away for a short while, but in the latter half of 2011 we took a trip to »

Watch: Valentine's Day featurette on Anne Hathaway romantic drama One Day, plus research into students finding love at university

9 February 2012 6:11 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Before we see Anne Hathaway slip into a skintight bodysuit as a motorcycle-riding, stiletto-heeled Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, she shows a far more tender side in romantic drama One Day.

And with Valentine's Day just around the corner, The Big Picture has fired its Cupid's arrow at the tale of "best friends, regret, missed opportunities and love", which is out on Blu-ray and DVD this week.

Directed by Lone Scherfig (An Education), One Day follows the story of Edinburgh students Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter (Jim Sturgess), who meet on the day of their university graduation, July 15 1988. It catches up with the pair on the same day for the next 20 years as they experience the highs and lows of adulthood both together and apart.

One Day Blu-Ray Review: An Uneven, Frustrating Romance

8 February 2012 6:47 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Film Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

As long as their is story-telling, romances will sell, and any author who manages to capture the imaginations of those romantically inclined sorts who populate the fiction best-seller charts with their purchases can usually comfortably live off the sales for some time. Or they would if there was any money left in books… With romantic films, success usually depends on the film-makers’ ability to marry an enduring story and intriguing characters with the established conventions of the genre, without simply trying to rehash Sleepless in Seattle, with a modern quirky twist. Far, far too many modern romances have gone to hell in the handcart that is “quirk” after all.

In both cases, striking the balance between new and traditional is a prime factor for success – romantics don’t want too much innovation, or too much deviation from the saccharine central elements that usually draw criticism from the more cynical commenters. »

One Day

Stars: Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Patricia Clarkson, Jodie Whittaker, Tom Mison | Written by David Nicholls | Directed by Lone Scherfig

David Nicholls’ One Day was easily my favourite book of the last year or two. I read it towards the end of last year and have since foisted it upon as many family and friends as possible. It has been my default birthday present for several people and probably will be for several more to come. So of course, when I heard about the inevitable film adaptation, I had the familiar feelings of excitement, hope and mild dread that anyone who has had a much-loved source text transferred to the big screen has felt.

Whilst one always finds oneself tempering the feelings of optimism about anticipated adaptations – you know it’s never going to be as good as the book/TV programme/comic/videogame/theme park ride – it is »

DVD Review: 'One Day'

★★★☆☆ Based on the hugely successful novel of the same, the theatrical release of Lone Scherfig's One Day (2011) carried with it the unusually high expectations of those already devoted to its source material. Adapted for the screen by original author David Nicholls and directed by Scherfig, best known for the BAFTA Award-winning An Education (2009), these expectations were not unfounded. However, with source material spanning 20 years of a relationship, they may have been a little unrealistic.

Bridget Jones's Baby due date pushed back

Working Title still expected to deliver third instalment in series despite concerns over the script

The third instalment in the Bridget Jones series, Bridget Jones's Baby, has run into script problems resulting in a delay to the start of production, according to reports.

Hugh Grant, due to reprise his role as lothario Daniel Cleaver, has apparently criticised Helen Fielding and David Nicholls' script, resulting in producers placing the project on hiatus.

One source even goes so far as to claim the project is "basically dead". However, a statement released this morning by Working Title says it is "still working on the script hence the delay to the start of production, but the film is going ahead as planned".

The film's original director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) left the project last year owing to creative differences, with Full Monty director Peter Cattaneo taking over. The third instalment in the series concerns »

Hugh Grant has not delayed “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” producers claim

By Sean O’Connell

Hollywoodnews.com: Is the “Bridget Jones” sequel dead or isn’t it?

Conflicting reports are coming down the wire over the past 24 hours, leaving fans of Renee Zellweger’s beloved spinster with their heads spinning just a bit.

First, there were reports that the production on a third “Bridget Jones” comedy had stalled, and that script problems could doom the entire effort despite the involvement of original “Diary” stars Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant. It is Grant, in fact, who was receiving the lion’s share of the blame for delaying the production, though producers now are coming to the funny man’s defense.

“Reports that Hugh Grant has exited ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ are untrue,” said Working Title co-chairman Tim Bevan. “We are still working on the script, hence the delay to the start of production, but the film is going ahead as planned. »

Bridget Jones' Baby Hugh Grant Rumors Debunked

3 February 2012 7:48 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last night, a report surfaced indicating that the comedy sequel Bridget Jones' Baby was in turmoil, with actor Hugh Grant leaving the project due to a delay in production. Today, Working Title Films' co-chairman Tim Bevan issued a statement, which confirms the production delay, but debunks the rumor that Hugh Grant has stepped away from the follow-up film.

"Reports that Hugh Grant has exited Bridget Jones' Baby are untrue. We are still working on the script, hence the delay to the start of production, but the film is going ahead as planned."

We last reported on this project back in November, when director Peter Cattaneo signed on to the sequel. He will work from a screenplay by Helen Fielding, David Nicholls, and Paul Feig, who at one point was attached to direct.

Working Title Denies Hugh Grant Has Exited Bridget Jones’s Baby

3 February 2012 7:36 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Working Title Films have denied yesterday’s reports that actor Hugh Grant has left production on Bridget Jones’s Baby over script problems.

After suffering years worth of delays before finally seemingly coming together to shoot in a couple of weeks, The Hollywood Reporter claimed yesterday that pre-production on the third ‘Diary’ movie had hit a snag over script problems and the film was close to being shut down.

It was reported that Hugh Grant was deeply dissatisfied with how author Helen Fielding and David Nicholls‘s screenplay had shaped up, a long-running issue that had already cost the original director.

Tim Bevan, co-chairman of Working Title released the following statement regarding the rumours;

“Reports that Hugh Grant has exited ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ are untrue. We are still working on the script, hence the delay to the start of production, but the film is going ahead as planned.”

Bridget Jones 3 Reportedly Put On Hold Over Script Issues

2 February 2012 8:21 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Getting Bridget Jones back onto the big screen hasn.t been an easy task. While the first two films were based on popular novels, the planned third installment is flying without a published book on which to base an adaptation. Back in August, word was that Fielding was working on a third book and the script for the third movie, and she didn't know if they'd be the same. The script seems to be the root of the issues for the film. Initially, Paul Feig was supposed to develop the script with the intention of directing, however last October he exited the project, possibly because he wasn.t British enough (or at all). The film has since moved forward with David Nicholls and author Helen Fielding developing the script, with Peter Cattaneo set to direct. But there have been setbacks and one source is even going so far as to »

From Book To Film: Our Top Adaptations For The Big Screen

2 February 2012 1:19 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

The film One Day is released on both DVD and Blu-Ray on Monday 6th February, and being such fans of the original novel, we here at The Hollywood News thought we’d countdown our favourite book to movie adaptations.

The novel One Day is a book that I managed to grab a hold of on my last summer’s holiday in Greece last year. I jumped on the bandwagon after seeing dozens of commuters reading the thing on the tube on my own journey into work and was eager to find out what it was all about. What was also interesting to me was that the author, David Nicholls, was to adapt the film into a film, not an easy task considering the plot’s structure. I reviewed the film theatrically here, so won’t go into too much detail, but in short, despite it’s flaws, I really liked it as a film too. »
