Michael Hitchcock was born in Defiance, Ohio and later raised in Western Springs, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. He attributes many of his offbeat characters on his midwestern upbringing. Hitchcock received his Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern University's School of Speech and a Master of Fine Arts degree from U.C.L.A.'s film school. Hitchcock is an alumnus of the Los Angeles comedy and improvisational troupe "The Groundlings."

Has appeared in the four most well-known Christopher Guest directed films: Waiting for Guffman (1996), Best in Show (2000), A Mighty Wind (2003), and For Your Consideration (2006).
The orthodontic braces that Michael Hitchcock wore in "Best in Show" were custom-fitted onto plastic retainers that slipped over Michael's teeth.
Hitchcock's high school alma mater, Lyons Township High School is LaGrange, Illinois is also the alma mater of David Hasselhoff and NBA star Jeff Hornacek.
