DVD Review: Monster Brawl

Monster Brawl

Stars: Dave Foley, Art Hindle, Robert Maillet, Jimmy Hart, Herb Dean, Kevin Nash, Lance Henriksen, Jason David Brown, Rj Skinner | Written and Directed by Jesse T. Cook

Monster movies and wrestling. Two of my favourite concepts that come together in the cheesy fight-flick that is Monster Brawl… Of course pitting monster vs. monster is nothing new, its an age-old concept in Hollywood, from the 40s and Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman and House of Frankenstein to modern-day efforts such as 2004′s Van Helsing, but throwing wrestling into the mix has – until now – been more of a standard of Mexican cinema. In fact Monster Brawl has (besides feeling like a Halloween episode of WWE Raw) a lot more in common with the Mexican luchador films of El Santo than anything Hollywood has ever produced.

For those looking for something substantial, I will proffer warning that the plot of Monster Brawl »

Blu-ray Review: The Octagon

The Octagon

Stars: Chuck Norris, Tadashi YamashitaKaren Carlson, Lee Van Cleef, Art Hindle, Carol Bagdasarian | Written by Paul Aaron, Leigh Chapman | Directed by Eric Karson

Chuck Norris, the man and the legend, he’s made movies that can truly make you cringe; for all the wrong reasons. The Octagon in some respects is one of these cringe-worthy films with its truly strange script and its use of the “ninja”, but we can’t blame Norris of course or he’ll give us that intense stare and probably whisper to himself some philosophical thought that would warp our tiny little minds. Yes, if The Octagon is to be believed Chuck Norris has an internal monologue and it’s a whisper, which sounds very much like a serial killer planning your death. Chuck Norris is Scott James a man haunted by his past. Trained as a martial artist with his friend »

Blu-ray Review - The Octagon (1980)

4 August 2012 1:30 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Octagon, 1980.

Directed by Erik Karson.

Starring Chuck Norris, Karen Carlson, Lee Van Cleef, Tadashi Yamashita, Richard Norton, Art Hindle, Kim Lankford and Yuki Shimoda.

Synopsis:

A martial artist battles an international terrorist organisation of ninjas.

Cashing in on The Expendables 2 is a double release of old Chuck Norris classics on Blu-Ray. There’s A Force of One and The Octagon, two of Chuck’s early films during his period with American cinema. For those who grew up as fans of Chuck, or just became retrospective fans in recent years, then The Octagon is one that marked Norris’ shift from simply a Caucasian answer to Bruce Le, to All-American, all-action hero.

The Octagon’s premise is simple. Chuck Norris vs Ninjas. That’s really about it. Norris is Scott James, a man haunted by memories of his growing up and rivalry with his former martial art brother Seikura, who »

Monster Brawl (2011) Movie Review

19 July 2012 8:08 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Arriving soon on region 2 DVD through Momentum is “Monster Brawl”, a film revolving around the wacky, though oddly logical concept of pitting 8 classic monster types against each other in a wrestling championship battle to the death. Written and directed by Canadian helmer Jesse T. Cook (“Scarce”), the film features comedian Dave Foley and genre veteran Art Hindle (known for his appearances in the likes of the 1978 version of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” and Cronenberg’s “The Brood”) as ringside commentators as the contest to find the world’s top ghoul plays out in misty old graveyard. There really isn’t anything more to the plot, as Lady Vampire, Witch Bitch, Werewolf, Frankenstein’s monster (with Igor), Zombie Man, Swamp Gut, The Mummy and The Cyclops face-off against each other in a series of bouts, while wrestling icon Jimmy “Mouth of the South” Hart adds his own brand of hyperbole-packed »

Blu-ray Review: Monster Brawl

22 June 2012 7:24 AM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Remember when you were a kid and you would dream of your favorite monsters battling each other? You would sit in school daydreaming about what it would be like to see Frankenstein's Monster battle the Werewolf or the Mummy get into hand-to-hand combat with the Creature from the Black Lagoon. This is something you no longer have to imagine. Thanks to Image Entertainment, Monster Brawl takes those very childhood fantasies and puts them on screen.

The movie is simple to describe. You take all your favorite horror movie creatures and throw them in a wrestling ring to battle it out with each other to the death. Throw in some intro sequences to give each monster's backstory and some emcees dishing witty retorts back and forth and you've got a film that should satisfy both horror fans and wrestling fans.

If you watch professional wrestling, you know exactly what to expect from this film. »

First we celebrate the dedicated dads who'd do anything for their children – as few as there seem to be in fiction, that is.

Exclusive Interview: Monster Brawl Director Jesse Thomas Cook

13 June 2012 10:17 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Monster Brawl was released to Blu-ray and DVD this week and I had a chance to talk with writer and director Jesse Thomas Cook. For those that aren’t familiar with the movie, Monster Brawl is an interesting mix of WWE-style wrestling with classic monsters and humor that reminds me of some of the classic “versus” monster films from the 60s and 70s.

Continue reading to learn about how the project came to be, monsters that didn’t make the cut, and plans for a sequel or reboot:

Monster Brawl is so different from most horror films. What was your inspiration behind this concept and why did you decide to go with this type of film over a traditional story-drive movie?

Jesse Thomas Cook: We first set out to create a company that would produce 10 films in our home town of Collingwood, Ontario. We wanted to start off with »
