With Rob Zombie's upcoming film 31 taking place in a setting known as "Murder World", you can expect to find plenty of malevolent monsters (of the human variety) around every corner, but not every character is evil at heart. Zombie's newest photo from his next film features what the writer/director calls "the good guys from 31", characters played by Meg Foster, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Sheri Moon Zombie, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, and Kevin Jackson.

Zombie's 31 was recently acquired for North American distribution by Alchemy. No release date has been revealed at this time, but stay tuned to Daily Dead for further updates on Zombie's latest film.

New Look at Rob Zombie’s Halloween-Set Horror Film ‘31’

1 May 2015 9:52 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

With Rob Zombie's upcoming film 31 taking place in a setting known as "Murder World", you can expect to find plenty of malevolent monsters (of the human variety) around every corner, as evidenced in the latest still from the film, which shows someone who looks like they came from Dr. Frankenstein's lab.

Revealed by Bloody Disgusting, the new still from Rob Zombie's 31 features a very memorable member of the Murder World proceedings. Though the official cast member and character in the still haven't been announced, there are physical similarities between this character and Richard Brake's Doom-Head, who was revealed in a shadow-shrouded still in March, so they very well could be one and the same.

Zombie's 31 was recently acquired for North American distribution by Alchemy. No release date has been revealed at this time, but stay tuned to Daily Dead for further updates on Zombie's latest film. »

Two eerie scarecrow creations make for an unsettling atmosphere in one of two new photos from Rob Zombie's 31. Currently in the editing stage, Zombie's latest Halloween-set horror film will feature eclectic, creepy characters aplenty, including Sick-Head, Doom-Head, Sister Serpent, Father Murder and more.

"Welcome to my next film. It is called 31. It is the story of five random people kidnapped on the five days leading up to Halloween and held hostage in a place called Murder World. While trapped inside this man-made Hell they must fight to survive playing the most violent game known to man... a game called 31.

31 has no rules. 31 has no boundaries. It is ever so simple. Do whatever you can do to kill your opponent before they kill you. Keep this up for 12 hours and freedom is yours.

Who are the opponents? Well... a group of vile, filthy, blood-thirsty clowns known as The Heads. »

Cooley High | Blu-ray Review

21 April 2015 9:00 AM, PDT | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Forty years after its theatrical release, Michael Schultz’s poignant early title Cooley High (1975) comes to Blu-ray. A prominent figure in film in the 70s and 80s thanks to iconic titles like the progressive Car Wash (1976), martial arts film The Last Dragon (1986), and the excellent 1977 Richard Pryor film Which Way is Up? (a remake of Wertmuller’s The Seduction of Mimi), Schultz tends to get left out of deserving discussions as concerns black filmmakers.

References to this 60s period piece concerning a group of friends growing up in the Chicago housing projects is often referred to as the black American Graffiti, a thankless distinction, to be sure. Operating outside of the Blaxploitation paradigm, Schultz and screenwriter Eric Monte (apparently portions of this are autobiographical) simply recreate a certain period wherein two friends learn hard lessons as they grow to realize the cruelty of the world around them. “We Didn’t Even Have Time For a Table Read”: Cooley High Director Michael Schultz

Forty years ago, a film crew with exploitation financing and art-house ambitions arrived in Chicago to create Cooley High, a funny and poignant slice of life that would eventually become a classic. The movie — which tells the story of black teenagers growing up in the Cabrini-Green housing project as they fall in and out of love, get into trouble, and try to figure out their futures — served as a launching pad for actors Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Glynn Turman, and Garrett Morris, and provided inspiration for a later generation of filmmakers that included John Singleton and the Hughes Brothers. Sister Dragon, Doom-Head, Father Murder, Lucky Leo—these are the names of just a handful of the bizarre, intriguing characters inhabiting Rob Zombie’s 31, which wraps filming shortly and is on the verge of entering the editing stage. In addition to Walter as Lucky Leo and Malcolm McDowell as Father Murder, the "owner of Murder World", 31 comprises the following eclectic cast:

Pancho Moler (2005's Bad News Bears, American Horror Story: Freak Show) plays Sick-Head. Jeff Daniel Phillips (The Lords of Salem, Halloween 2) portrays Roscoe, "the ass-kicking carney mechanic of Venus Virgo’s traveling show." Malcolm McDowell Joins Rob Zombie’s 31

11 March 2015 12:51 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Halloween may be over seven months away, but on the set of Rob Zombie's 31, the autumnal season is in full force and trick-or-treaters could pop up at any minute. Filming began yesterday on 31, Rob Zombie's Halloween-set horror film that takes place on the horror-soaked holiday at a place called Murder World. In recent weeks several key cast members have been added to the fright film and yesterday another big-name addition was announced: Malcolm McDowell.

In addition to playing Dr. Samuel Loomis in Rob Zombie's Halloweeen (2007) and Halloween II (2009), McDowell has played memorable characters aplenty in his legendary career and is perhaps best known for playing Alex in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. Now he'll add the character of Father Murder to his résumé. Malcolm McDowell Joins Rob Zombie's 31

10 March 2015 5:03 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Shooting is just underway on Rob Zombie's crowd-funded horror 31, and with that comes a steady stream of casting updates. The latest to be revealed, in his third collaboration with the director, is Malcolm McDowell.31 stems from rocker-turned-director Zombie's interest in the (supposed) fact that more people go missing in the Us on Halloween than on any other day of the year. His plot revolves around five people kidnapped during the run-up to the spooky holiday, and held hostage in a facility called Murder World where they're forced to battle for their lives against an insane posse of "vile, bloodthirsty clowns called The Heads" (not to be confused with the Bristolian stoner spacerock band).McDowell, who played Dr. Sam Loomis (rather differently to Donald Pleasance) in both Zombie's Halloween films, will be essaying the part of Father Murder, the owner of Murder World. He's joined, as announced so far, by »

In honor of Black History Month and the film's 40th anniversary, the WGA Committee of Black Writers hosted an intimate screening of "Cooley High" last night in Los Angeles. The classic story about a group of Chicago teens in the 1960s remained a fan favorite over the years for its heartfelt nostalgia and as Sergio pointed out, the movie recently came to Blu Ray. Screening attendees got a rare chance to hear about the making of the film from "Cooley High" screenwriter Eric Monte and cast members Glynn Turman and Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, who played Preach and Cochise, in a post-screening conversation moderated fittingly by "Hollywood Shuffle" »

‘Cooley High’ and ‘Hollywood Shuffle’ Coming Out on Blu-ray DVD in April

Director Michael Schultz’s 1975 American International film Cooley High is one of those films, like Love and Basketball, that seems to be on every “most beloved” black films list. The period dramedy set, in 1964 Chicago, chronicles the lives of two best high school buddies, Preach (played by Glynn Truman), a serious minded guy with aspirations of becoming a famous writer and his best friend Cochise (played Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs), the school  basketball hero who’s headed for college and what looks like a promising career. Together we follow them as the goof off, fall in love, cut class, crash parties, and other shenanigans that most teenagers get involved in, as »
