Oscar's Collection: The Youngest Best Actress Nominees

Another Oscar Trivia Explosion. This time it's the Actresses.

Jennifer Lawrence made quite a film-carrying impression in Winter's Bone this past summer. It was one of the leggiest arthouse hits in some time, playing for months, and wracking up $6+ million without a huge advertising budget or bankable stars and with grim subject matter. Well done. At Christmas Hailee Steinfeld will lead us on a revenge journey in True Grit. While we suspect she's the lead actress as well, people her age are almost always demoted to "Supporting" if they're sharing the screen with a big star as co-lead and she is. Hi, Jeff Bridges! But we're pretending she's an Oscar lead today so as to have double the excuse to make this list. Humour us, won'cha?

Imaginary Movie: Steinfeld. Lawrence.  Winter's True Bone.

36 Youngest Best Actress NomineesAnd where Jennifer or Hailee would fit in, were they to be nominated. (Winning performances are in red. »

George Bernard Shaw on TCM: Pygmalion, Caesar And Cleopatra, The Millionairess

15 April 2010 6:45 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Leslie Howard, Wendy Hiller Pygmalion George Bernard Shaw is tonight’s star on Turner Classic Movies. Major Barbara (1941), directed by Gabriel Pascal, and starring Rex Harrison and Wendy Hiller, is on right now. I’ve watched it a couple of times, but I haven’t been able to really get into it. Even so, I thoroughly enjoyed both Robert Morley and Marie Lohr in supporting roles. Also of note, Deborah Kerr has what amounts to a bit part. The highly theatrical Caesar And Cleopatra (1945) offers two solid performances — Claude Rains as Caesar; Vivien Leigh as Cleopatra (right) — while Pygmalion (1938), co-directed by Anthony Asquith and Leslie Howard, is considered the best film adaptation of a Shaw play. Wendy Hiller, for her [...] »

My Fair Lady: Mulligan vs. Knightley

26 March 2010 11:15 AM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

But can she sing? That's what I asked when Keira Knightley turned up in the first round of would-be Eliza Doolittles for Emma Thompson's rewrite of Lerner & Loewe's 1964 My Fair Lady, for which she is returning to the source material, George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. (Ever see the wonderful Wendy Hiller/Leslie Howard Pygmalion?) Duncan Kenworthy (Love Actually) and London theater icon Cameron Mackintosh are producing. It turns out that Knightley, while not a trained singer, studied with a voice coach in order to sing in the 2008 UK release The Edge of Love. I insist that especially today, a musical leading lady must sing the role herself. (Marne Nixon did the honors for stylish charmer Audrey Hepburn.) Broadway star Julie Andrews was robbed!
