One of the nation’s hottest young comics in the early and mid-1960s, Allen wrote his first screenplay, What’s New Pussycat? in 1965, and also co-starred in the film, making his writing/directing debut with Take the Money and Run, in 1969.

Since then, Woody Allen has not only been one of America’s most beloved and unique voices in cinema, »

New Trailer for Woody Allen's 'Whatever Works'

8 May 2009 12:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you had to pick someone to play a (slightly) younger version of Woody Allen, it'd pretty much have to be Larry David, right? Both men are overtly Jewish, neurotic, self-obsessed, and often pretty hilarious -- so it doesn't surprise me one bit to see Larry David take the starring role in Allen's latest, a quick-looking New York comedy called Whatever Works. Going only by the trailer, it looks to be an enjoyably typical (if appreciably old-school) Woody Allen comedy, but (as usual) the prolific filmmaker has managed to bring together one hell of a fun ensemble.

Joining Larry David are Patricia Clarkson, Ed Begley Jr., Evan Rachel Wood, and Conleth Hill in this story of an upper-class New Yorker who has some sort of mid-life crisis and decides to live like a starving artist. (If I have the synopsis right, then this flick sounds a little like Mel Brooks' Life Stinks, »

Trailer: Whatever Works -- The new Woody Allen movie starring Larry David

8 May 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Written by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub I’m on a short break at the “Terminator Salvation” junket and I noticed the first trailer for the new Woody Allen movie “Whatever Works” has been released. Due to my terrible bandwidth, I can’t watch it. So I can’t comment on how the trailer looks. But since I saw the movie at this year’s ShoWest, I can tell you the film is quite funny and Larry David as Woody Allen is great. If you’re a fan of either Woody or Larry, it’s a much see film. Here’s the synopsis: An eccentric New Yorker (Larry David) abandons his upper class life to lead a more bohemian existence. He meets a young girl from the south and her family and no two people seem to get along in the entanglements that follow. The film also stars Ed Begley Jr., Patricia Clarkson, »

Tribeca Film Festival preview: Read the picks, watch the clips

22 April 2009 7:16 AM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

This year's eighth annual Tribeca Film Festival opens today with a bevy of selections from 33 countries. Including a mountain of premieres (48 world premieres, 5 international, 14 North American, 2 U.S.) along with 81 directors presenting their projects at the New York City-based festival, Tribeca has a lot going on, though inexplicably, less than previous years.

Running from April 23 - May 3, some of the more interesting films are below:   The Girlfriend Experience: "Steven Soderbergh reaffirms his position as a master director with this portrait of a $2,000-an-hour Manhattan escort. With adult film star Sasha Grey as his lead, Soderbergh takes us into the life of a woman who provides her clients the true "girlfriend experience," not just your average date. Sophisticated, worldly, well-dressed, and well-versed in the topics of pre-election politics and issues, Grey's call girl and her accepting trainer boyfriend (Chris Santos) provide us the storyline that guides us through the capitalist underbelly of our society. »
