Talk about Christmas creep: Independence Day hasn’t even rolled around yet, but Universal is already thinking ahead to the holidays. Smoove, Romany Malco, and John Michael Higgins) under one roof for a cozy family get-together. Hijinks, shenanigans, and drama ensue, followed […]

Hollywood’s knack for ensemble festive comedies will continue unabated this year in the form of Almost Christmas, an ensemble dramedy that revolves around, you guessed it, a bickering family that is forced to set aside old differences while sharing the same roof during the holiday period.
No, it’s not the Griswolds; for David E. Talbert’s (Baggage Claim) festive feature will center on Danny Glover’s beloved patriarch “who asks his family for one gift this holiday season: to get along. If they can honor that wish and spend five days under the same roof without killing one another, it will be a Christmas miracle.”
Written and directed by Talbert, along with the producing support of Ride Along‘s Will Packer, Almost Christmas isn’t likely to herald any comedic revolutions anytime soon, but as a star-studded crowd-pleaser, it ought to do just fine come November. It features a cast led by Kimberly Elise, Danny Glover, John Michael Higgins, Romany Malco, Mo’Nique, Jb Smoove, Gabrielle Union, Omar Epps, Nicole Ari Parker, Jessie T. Usher and DC Young Fly.
Taking full advantage of the holiday release window, Almost Christmas will revel in seasonal shenanigans when David E. Talbert’s comedy opens on November 11. In the meantime, a new poster introduces that all-star cast, who simply can’t contain their excitement to kick off the festive celebrations.

With season three of DreamWorks Animation’s All Hail King Julien set to premiere on Netflix this Friday (June 17th), we’ve got a batch of images from the show, along with a clip that sees Princess Julienne (Angelica Huston) and Prince Barty (John Michael Higgins), King Julien’s dramatic and needy parents, arriving for unannounced for a royal visit. Check them out here…
This season, alongside Danny Jacobs’ Emmy®-winning comedic work as King Julien, All Hail King Julien has attracted accomplished talent with A-level guest stars including Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Angelica Huston (The Addams Family, The Royal Tenenbaums), Henry Winkler (Happy Days, Arrested Development), and John Michael Higgins (Pitch Perfect, Yes Man).
You might be familiar with the Emmy®-winning show, but did you know that All Hail King Julien isn’t just a tropical adventure for children? In fact, the show has become a mecca of pop culture phenomena and not-so-subtle adult humor, bringing the jungle of Madagascar closer to modern society than you might think. With skewering parallels to our addictive consumption of coffee and ridiculous “high fashion” trends, biting representations of class and beauty standards, and emotional characters that challenge stereotypical gender roles, All Hail King Julien produces witty observations that are meant for modern-day thinkers of all ages.
All Hail King Julien season 3 lands on Netflix on Friday, June 17th.

It’s been a difficult week for Universal’s Pitch Perfect 3.
No sooner had we learned of the studio’s plan to delay the musical threequel by a full six months – from July 21 to December 22, 2017 – now Variety has revealed that Elizabeth Banks has backed out of directing duties.
Banks, who took point at the helm for Pitch Perfect 2 and made her directorial debut in the process, remains attached to the lucrative musical franchise as producer and will still reprise her role of Gail, one part of Universal’s irreverent commentating team opposite John Michael Higgins.
Variety didn’t disclose an exact reason for the decision, though it’s believed that the actress’ stacked schedule was the overriding factor. Not only does Banks’ current slate feature a villainious role in Lionsgate’s Power Rangers movie – a film that could go on to spawn a bona fide franchise – but there »

A good cast led by Kelsey Grammer lifts this comedy about banking, as an old-fashioned British firm falls foul of a shark-like Us investor, out of the doldrums
Like The Big Short earlier this year, this feature by the British director Vadim Jean (best known for his debut, Leon the Pig Farmer) attempts to generate comedy from the banking world and the ethically questionable people who run it – not a subject that would lend itself to hilarity, you would think. This crack at the subject is fluffier, more traditionally sitcom-like than Adam McKay’s docu-comedy about the 2009 savings and loan meltdown, but it’s diverting enough to pass muster, thanks to a seasoned cast. Kelsey Grammer plays bumbler Charles Bunbury who’s been running Tuftons, an investment bank that’s been in the family of his wife, Penelope (Tamsin Greig), for years. Charles is no match for the coup plotted »

The two won’t square off in an Oval Office showdown, however. The line-up of celebs who’ll be paired with civilian contestants for the Michael Strahan-hosted game show’s 10-episode run (kicking off Sunday, June 26) looks like this:
• Rosie O’Donnell vs. Kathy Najimy
Once slated to stage their reunion in the thick of the summer (July 21, 2017, to be exact), Universal has postponed the return of The Barden Bellas by close to six months, with Pitch Perfect 3 now set to open on December 22, 2017.
In its place, the studio has elected Malcolm Lee’s female-fronted comedy Girl Trip to slot into the vacant July 21 window, ensuring the Regina Hall-fronted romp moves up one month from its initial August 11, 2017 release.
Currently simmering in pre-production, it’s understood Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow and Rebel Wilson have all closed deals to reprise their roles for Pitch Perfect 3, while Power Rangers alum Elizabeth Banks will return at the helm of the ensemble musical comedy. Banks is also on board to return as the irreverent Gail – one half of the brilliant commentating duo alongside John Michael Higgins – after making her directorial debut with last year’s Pitch Perfect 2. »

“Great News” and “Marlon” have been frontrunners from the very start. As previously reported, both of the projects have been at the top of the crop of NBC’s comedy pilots and were expected to land series orders. The network has struggled with comedies over the past few seasons, but is hoping to gain a presence in the genre, especially with a star in Wayans.
“Great News” stars Briga Heelan an up-and-coming news producer whose overbearing mother (Andrea Martin) re-enters the workforce with a job as an intern at the station where Katie works. Tracey Wigfield is a writer and and will serve as executive producer with Fey, Carlock and David Miner. The series is produced by Universal Television, Little Stranger and 3 Arts Entertainment. »

The network on Friday gave series orders to Marlon — a family sitcom starring Marlon Wayans (In Living Color, Scary Movie) — and Great News, starring Sctv vet Andrea Martin and produced by Tina Fey (SNL, 30 Rock).
Wayans will star in and executive-produce his eponymous comedy, with the cast also including Essence Atkins (Are We There Yet?, Half & Half), Bresha Webb (Grey’s Anatomy), Diallo Riddle (Silicon Valley) and young newcomers Notlim Taylor and Amir O’Neil. Loosely inspired by Wayans’ own life, »
After spending years imitating President George W. Bush on Saturday Night Live and on Broadway, Will Ferrell will be taking on another President. The actor has signed on to star in and produce Reagan, where he'll play U.S. President Ronald Reagan. The script by Mike Rosolio landed on The Black List last year as one of the best unproduced screenplays.
The story is described as a "hilarious political satire" by Variety, following Ronald Reagan as he falls into dementia at the start of his second term, when an ambitious intern is tasked with convincing the commander in chief that he is an actor playing the president in a movie. The script got so much buzz on The Black List that the company put on a live reading in Hollywood last month, with James Brolin reading the title role. The rest of the cast for that one-night-only live read included John Cho, »
“Pride & Joy is an old favorite of mine, and I’m delighted to see it released in this lovely new Image edition,” said Ennis, with Higgins adding: “Pride & Joy was the first comic story I had worked on that felt complete, like a suspense novel, visceral, and violent. Very pleased it will find a new audience with this Image graphic novel.”
Still mourning the loss of his wife, Jimmy Kavanagh lives quietly in the backwoods of New England, raising his devoted daughter and resentful son. That is, until fate comes calling in the worst way and Jimmy’s criminal past threatens to destroy his family.
Pride & Joy will hit comic book stores on May 4th and bookstores on May 10th.
