Colin Higgins was born on July 28, 1941 in Nouméa, New Caledonia, France. He was a writer and director, known for Harold and Maude (1971), 9 to 5 (1980) and Foul Play (1978). He died on August 5, 1988 in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA.

His screenplay for Harold and Maude (1971) was based on his thesis for the UCLA screenwriting MFA program.
His older brother is Australian actor John Higgins.
Served in the United States Merchant Marines.
Struggling financially at the time he wrote Harold and Maude (1971), he paid for his lodgings at a Hollywood producer's house by cleaning the swimming pool and sweeping the tennis court.
Directed one Oscar nominated performance: Charles Durning in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982).
