Clive Barker: Demon To Some, Angel To Others

25 November 2014 2:07 AM, PST | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

We’ve seen the clichés time and time again: flesh-munching zombies, deranged hitchhikers, disturbingly naive teenage babysitters, evil cliques of high school girls, whackos off dirt roads in rural America…. However, there are many movies that thrive upon original ideas and unique plots. One of the most imaginative figures in the realm of contemporary horror is Clive Barker. He has always eschewed formulas and clichés in favor of experimental (and often confusing or deceptive) visual storytelling devices and atmosphere.

Barker first formed a theater in London at age 21 to produce the plays he wrote, all of which were recognized for their horrific but fantastical elements. The profoundly unique and imaginative qualities that composed Barker's work is what led his novels to being adapted into films, which then inspired him to direct his own: enter Hellraiser (1987) . Based on his novella entitled The Hellbound Heart, the movie follows the alternate world of »

'Hellraiser' Reboot Story Details Revealed by Clive Barker

1 November 2014 9:31 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Just over one year ago, legendary horror filmmaker Clive Barker revealed that he has come aboard to write the Dimension Films reboot for what was his directorial debut, the 1987 horror classic Hellraiser. We haven't heard anything about the project since then, but Clive Barker recently offered an update in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, where he shed new insight into the Hellraiser plot.

"I think the phrase is 'reboot,' although I've never really understood what that meant. I wanted to make sure we sounded some fresh notes. The movie actually begins on Devil's Island. I wanted to fold into the Hellraiser narrative something about the guy-the Frenchman Lemarchand-who made the mysterious box, which raises Pinhead. I figured, 'Well, what would have happened to him?' He might well have been taken to Devil's Island and I thought that would be a pretty cool place to start the movie. »

Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) review

Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988)

Director: Tony Randel

Writers: Clive Barker (story), Peter Atkins (screenplay)

Starring: Clare Higgins as Julia Cotton

Ashley Laurence as Kirsty Cotton

Kenneth Cranham as Dr. Philip Channard/Channard Cenobite

William Hope as Kyle MacRae

Imogen Boorman as Tiffany

Doug Bradley as Pinhead/Captain Elliot Spencer

Nicholas Vince as Chatterer/Chatterer II

Simon Bamford as Butterball Cenobite

Barbie Wilde as Female Cenobite

Sean Chapman as Frank Cotton

Hellbound: Hellraiser II could have been an unquestionably inferior sequel to the amazing first film if it had been placed into the hands of a director who had a conflicting visionary approach to material that had been strongly established by Clive Barker, but wouldn’t you know it, director Tony Randel delivers one of those few follow ups that manages to stand on its own merits and follow suit to its predecessor.

My Fellow Cinephiles

I would like to address a statement that has been brought to my attention by film fans everywhere- “what is your favourite horror film?”. Such a question is unfair because by implication it demands the individual to pick one film out of the many they have seen in their life time thus far. How is this justice I ask? To have one ‘favourite’ movie cuts you short of an existence of potential cinematic delights because the truth of it is, loving film is not crystalline, but fluid. As one gets on in years, tastes begin to differ and a film you once »

Hellraiser Q&A Moderated By Fangoria Eic Chris Alexander!

14 July 2014 9:53 AM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

While at Texas Frightmare Weekend, I had the pleasure of hearing from a few cenobites at the Hellraiser panel, known to other Frightmare attendees as the Cenobite Me panel. Doug Bradley, who played the infamous character of Pinhead, along with Nicholas Vince, who played Chatterer, and Barbie Wilde, who played the female cenobite in Hellbound: Hellraiser II reunited in Texas for a quick chat with Fangoria Magazine’s editor in chief, Chris Alexander. This was undoubtedly one of the most entertaining panels I’ve ever been to, and I feel lucky to have had witnessed it in person. However, I know a lot of people couldn’t make it all the way to Texas, so I wanted to share the experience with everyone. This way, everyone can rejoice in the event of some of horror’s most iconic figures reliving the shocking, provocative, unforgettable Hellraiser films that we all know and love. »

"Rogue," the crime drama created by executive producer Matthew Parkhill ("The Caller") that stars Thandie Newton as an undercover cop in Oakland, CA, wasn't universally acclaimed, but it was still enough of a success as a first attempt at an original scripted drama for DirecTV that the satellite service ordered a second season. ‘A Fantastic Fear of Everything’ an unfeeling digest of interesting ideas, references, and aesthetics

A Fantastic Fear of Everything

Directed by Crispian Mills and Chris Hopewell

Written by Crispian Mills

UK, 2012

A Fantastic Fear of Everything is a film that Wes Anderson would make if he didn’t give a flying sausage about storytelling. It has many of his auteur signatures (a twee pop-art sensibility, creative and meticulous set design, character idiosyncrasies, assured and muted-mustard cinematography, an affected offbeat soundtrack, love for all things quaint or vintage), but there’s no prevailing context or structure to uphold these aesthetic qualities. Instead, everything about A Fantastic Fear of Everything, all of its quirks and eccentricities, exist in a vacuum that suspends the film in a permanent condition of unfeeling.

The film stars Simon Pegg as Jack, a neurotic and intrapersonal-communicating East London writer hoping to sell his Decades of Death, a book about serial killers. His agent, Clair (Clare Higgins), sets him up with a potential Hollywood buyer, »
