Lara Logan to Take Leave of Absence From CBS in Wake of ’60 Minutes’ Report

26 November 2013 10:44 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

CBS News correspondent Lara Logan and producer Max McClellan will take leave of absence from the network in the wake of a flawed “60 Minutes” report on last year’s attack on a U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya.

The suspension was a result of CBS News’ internal review of the Oct. 27 segment about Benghazi, which the network found to be lacking in its efforts to substantiate the assertions of a key source, security officer Dylan Davies. The review was disclosed in an internal memo from CBS News chairman Jeff Fager issued Tuesday.

The “60 Minutes” Benghazi controversy has spiraled during the past month into a major black eye for CBS News. Logan is one of the Eye’s star correspondents, and Fager is known to be a favored lieutenant of CBS Corp. topper Leslie Moonves.

Producers Guild To Honor Chuck Lorre with Norman Lear Award

Chuck Lorre will receive the 2014 Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television from the Producers Guild of America at the PGA Awards on Jan. 19.

Lear is being honored for his work on such shows as “The Big Bang Theory,” “Two and a Half Men” and “Dharma and Greg” – “series have impacted television on a level that we rarely see,” said PGA Awards co-chairs Lori McCreary and Michael De Luca in a statement.

“In a TV landscape that often feels saturated with homogenized, interchangeable series, his distinctive voice and commitment to vivid, one-of-a-kind characters have made him one of the true mainstays of our weekly television schedule,” McCreary and De Luca said. “Lorre is the definition of an iconic comedy producer, and we are so pleased to honor him this year.”

Said Lorre: “Norman Lear is a legend in this business and one of comedy’s true kings. I have to admit »

Janet Tobias talks No Place on Earth, in theaters April 5th

Filmmaker Janet Tobias makes her feature directorial debut with the powerful documentary No Place on Earth, after a successful career as a TV documentary producer for shows such as Dateline NBC, 60 Minutes, and Frontline. The film's inception came from Chris Nicola's National Geographic article that chronicled the incredible journey of the Stermer family, who survived in a Ukranian cave for 18 months (the longest recorded sustained underground survival) while hiding from the Nazis in World War II.

I recently had the chance to speak with Janet Tobias over the phone about No Place on Earth, which debuts in theaters April 5. Here's what she had to say.

I read that you initially had some trepidation about taking on this story, when you first heard about it. Can you talk about discovering Chris' article and what lead you to decide to make this? »
