Acted opposite Nancy Davis (Reagan) at Coach House Summer Theater in 1940.

Graduated from LaCrosse State Teacher's College in LaCrosse, WI in 1940; obtained degrees in English and General Science.

Flew a B-24 four engine bomber & crew to Italy; Completed 56 bombing missions over Northern Italy, Germany and Yugoslavia during WWII, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters.

"Watch Mr. Wizard" received a Peabody Award in 1954.

He worked as an actor and radio writer before starting "Watch Mr. Wizard" in Chicago on NBC.

Herbert and Bill Murray were the first guests on "Late Night with David Letterman" (1982) when the TV show premiered (February 1, 1982).
