Phylicia Rashad has been cast in the third season of “Empire,” joining the growing slate of prominent guest stars.

The Cosby Show” alum will recur as Diana Dubois, a powerhouse from one of New York’s oldest and most prominent African-American families, and the on-screen mother of Taye Diggs, who will portray an ambitious city councilman, Angelo Dubois. Diana (Rashad) has her sights set on higher office for her only son and she’ll stop at nothing to groom him. Her interactions with Cookie (Taraji P. Henson), Lucious (Terrence Howard) and the rest of the Lyon clan will lay bare the stark class divides that can exist, even within the black community.

Rashad joins other previously announced “Empire” guest stars, including Mariah CareySierra McClain, French Montana and Birdman.

With less than a month to go until “Empire” returns with its third season, the cast and crew behind Fox’s hit drama are gearing up for another drama-packed year.

Season 2 left off with a major cast member falling to her death, leaving viewers wondering who was killed off. The season also introduced Lucious Lyon’s (Terrence Howard) mother and the Empire king’s surprising half-brother who happens to be with the feds. Variety Announces 10 Actors to Watch for 2016

Variety is pleased to announce its annual list of 10 Actors to Watch, an honor the publication has bestowed since 1998.

Past honorees include many future Oscar winners and nominees, such as Viola Davis, Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Brie Larson, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael Shannon, and Melissa Leo.

This year’s honorees will be feted in the Oct. 4 issue of Variety, in conjunction with coverage of the Hamptons International Film Festival, which runs Oct. 6 to Oct. 10. This marks the fifth year Variety has collaborated with the festival to present Actors to Watch.
