Happy Birthday, Chris Colfer! Glee Star Turns 22

8 hours ago | E! Online - UK | See recent E! Online - UK news »

Our little, Gleeful high school graduate (well, in TV land) is celebrating his 22nd birthday today! And the only scenario we can picture for Chris Colfer's special day, is of him roaming the streets while bursting into song. Oh, it's not just us? Although Colfer's Kurt Hummel has moved on from McKinley High, it won't be the last we see of him on Glee (thank goodness). But the actor has some other projects up his sleeve, like writing and starring in Struck by Lightning, a dark, irreverent coming-of-age comedy that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and includes Allison Janney, Dermot Mulroney, Polly Bergen, Christina Hendricks, Angela Kinsey, Sarah Hyland and Bridesmaids' »

William Bradley: Mad Men: A Great Leaper Forward? Joan, Jag, Don's Return to Advertising (And Other, er, Treks)

23 May 2012 6:46 PM, PDT | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

"Prepare for a great leap forward!"

-- Chairman Mao Zedong, er,

Don Draper

"Christmas Waltz" is an improved episode of Mad Men in this uneven fifth season of a longtime great TV series, an episode with a very welcome return to advertising. Too much of this season has been taken up with some fairly arbitrary soap opera doings.

The show is at its best, and most important, when the drama revolves around the advertising business. It's the reason it's called Mad Men, after all, and not, say, Unhappy People.

This season, not incidentally, after reaching new highs early on, ratings have slumped to the lowest level since Season 3. This latest episode, in fact, is the lowest-rated episode in this decade, with viewership little more than half that of the highly anticipated Season 5 premiere.

It's not a surprise here, after the hairpin plotting that marked the first half of this season. »

TV Review: Mad Men 5.10 – “Christmas Waltz”

23 May 2012 12:06 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

[rating 4.5]

(Warning: significant spoilers follow)

Well, you knew it was only a matter of time before Star Trek got mentioned on this show. I wasn’t at all surprised to hear the series get a shout-out, but I was somewhat surprised at the context and who was behind it.

Let’s start, though, by talking about Lane (Jared Harris). It seems Inland Revenue wants a cut of the money he’s been making overseas; a cut to the tune of about 2,900 pounds. Lane doesn’t have this kind of scratch lying about the house, so he has to think of a plan.

First we see him extending the firm’s line of credit and then telling everyone at the board meeting that they can use that as a Christmas bonus. Problem solved, except that Burt (Robert Morse) wants to hold off until the office Christmas party. Lane tries to object, but »

Colbert Nation votes Stephen Colbert No. 69 on Maxim's Hot 100 list... of women

22 May 2012 11:15 AM, PDT | Nerve | See recent Nerve news »

Maxim released their Hot 100 list of the most beautiful women in the world, and while we could all endlessly debate the merit of a practice that’s steeped in the tradition of high school guys ranking the prettiest girls in their class, I don’t see any reason to get worked up over a list that doesn’t even include Christina Hendricks in the top ten. (77th? Are you kidding me? In what  world is JWoww hotter than Joan?) But besides simply reminding us that Leonardo DiCaprio really screwed up by losing model Bar Refaeli, who tops the list, people are buzzing about the inclusion of fake political pundit and decidedly male Stephen Colbert in the highly coveted 69 spot. Colbert found himself on the ballot as a result of a write-in campaign which, as any member of the Colbert Nation can tell you, is always a dangerous proposition. As [...] »

Samantha Zalaznick: Mad Men Recap: "Mad Money"

22 May 2012 10:28 AM, PDT | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

Christmas come early: Kinsey! Joan and Don! Baby Daddy Roger! This was fun.

Jon Hamm and Christina Hendricks are electric on the screen together. It's impossible to think about anything else, so let's just start here. Joan has kept her cool in the office all season and what a relief to see her throw the airplane at Idiot Secretary's face. Just as Joan breaks down, Don swoops in to take her on a magic Jaguar ride. "Buying things makes people feel better." From the moment Don wraps his jacket around her, they turn into Superman and Wonder Woman; they're unstoppable. Joan immediately jumps into character at the dealership, and points to the hottest red car in the room. "Oh honey, what's that?" It's the most beautiful car ever made. The salesman dares to attempt to ride with Joan. What's that? Here's $6000 for you to get out of my way. And off they go, »

10 Depressing Takeaways About American Masculinity From Maxim's Top 100 List

22 May 2012 10:27 AM, PDT | Celebsology | See recent Celebsology news »

Maxim—which made my 2003 list of shit that won't exist in a more advanced future—decided to go democratic this year and open up its 100 Most Beautiful Women inventory to its reading viewing public. The move produced a few genuine surprises, though none of them will make you feel especially hopeful about the state of American masculinity. (Who likes white women? Maxim readers like white women.) Here's the top 10 takeaways, from a writer who admittedly didn't recognize about 75% of the entries:

10. Kat Dennings is hotter than #97, but she deserves her low ranking for starring on such a noxious show. 2 Broke Girls will go down as the pop-culture skidmark of our sour economy.

9. There's not a lot of bright side to getting thrown in Italian prison for four years, but Amanda Knox may consider making #92 on the Maxim Top 100 a downpayment on a better consolation prize down the road. Also, Maxim's »

Brie Dyas: How Joan Can Seduce Don Draper

21 May 2012 11:47 AM, PDT | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

In last night's episode, we finally get a Joan Holloway-Harris storyline. Kinda sorta. And you can leave it to Christina Hendricks to brighten up any scene she's in...even when she's throwing statues at idiot receptionists.

To be fair, that receptionist had it coming. She's the very definition of annoying -- whiny-voiced, meek and lacking common sense. It was only a matter of time before Joan told her off.

Stylistically, the mid-to-late 60's were hard for a woman like Joan. And not just for the impending youthquake that makes everyone over 30 (Joan is about 36) into a stodgy enemy, but because the fitted dress style fell out of favor. Tailored silhouettes transformed into dresses that were cut away from the body, and up very high on the leg. To quote my mom, "Even older ladies wore minis, because you really couldn't find anything else in stores."

Let's take a moment to let that sink in. »

How Joanie Got Her Groove Back on 'Mad Men'

21 May 2012 7:53 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The romantic potential of Don (Jon Hamm) and Joan (Christina Hendricks) has to have crossed the mind of every "Mad Men" fan at least once, not because it seems likely or because the two even share than much time on screen, but because they're so perfectly matched. They're such beautiful, competent retro specimens who possess, at least at times, a heightened understanding of human nature and a burnished armor of control. They are each formidable forces in the offices of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, the individual king and queen, though both have lost momentum lately for reasons related to their marriages -- in Don's case, thanks to Megan's (Jessica Paré) choosing acting over advertising and in Joan's, due to her split with the wretched Greg (Samuel Page). Mark Duplass, Jennifer Aniston & Ben Kingsley Head To 'Convention,' Patrick Wilson & Christina Hendricks Lead Darren Aronofsky-Produced 'Zipper'

21 May 2012 7:40 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Mark Duplass has had busy couple of years, directing and writing three films with his brother, and starring in a number of projects including the raunchy FX comedy, “The League,” and in the upcoming sci-fi tinged indie dramedy “Safety Not Guaranteed” with Aubrey Plaza. He’s following up that role with one in another indie film with a sci-fi element, “Convention,” and he’s going to be acting opposite some pretty big names.

Duplass will be playing an inventor who unveils his latest creation at a national box convention: the five-sided box. The mysterious new design initially seems perfect, until Duplass’ inventor learns that each time its special fold is created, he rips a hole in the space-time continuum. It’s up to him and his sister to put things back together and save the role. Jennifer Aniston is circling the sister role and Ben Kingsley is officially signed up »

Mad Men 5.10 "Christmas Waltz" Review

Mad Men 5.10 "Christmas Waltz" Review

It is December 1966 in Mad Men and unlike the last Christmas period we saw things are more financially stable for Scdp. The firm is not a powerhouse nor is it teetering on the edge of oblivion, but that doesn't mean that all of the characters are in a comfortable financial position as we see in the opening sequence as Lane (Jared Harris) discusses his impending doom on the phone. Lane is a character that we have seen little of since his dust up with Pete (Vincent Kartheiser) and so this storyline is a welcome return even if Lane's actions were rather dubious and will likely have some major consequences. Joan (Christina Hendricks) is another character who has been a bit player over the past few weeks, but this episode more than makes up for this.

Christmas really came early in this week’s Mad Men, which gifted us with an hour that answered at least one huge question, took a seasonal stroll down memory lane, and featured some recently neglected members of the ensemble. The quips! The plot forwarding! The sexy sports cars! Let’s tear open the windows, throw up the sash, and review the big developments of “Christmas Waltz.”

'Mad Men Season 5 Episode 510 'Christmas Waltz': Don Draper really is back

21 May 2012 1:19 AM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

With three episodes left of Season 5, the tension on "Mad Men" shifted into high gear on Sunday's (May 20) episode, "Christmas Waltz." Here's the one-sentence summary: Don Draper's head is back in the game, Lane Pryce is dancing on the edge of financial ruin (and possibly a precipice) and it turns out that Harry Crane, official Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce d-bag, isn't a total tool after all.

Don's back: At the end of the episode, Don (Jon Hamm) re-engaged in the work of Scdp and it's a good thing because if Don's happy, so goes the firm. What convinced him? A domino effect: Pete (Vincent Kartheiser) suggested Don drive a Jaguar. Thanks to Joan (Christina Hendricks), drunk-driving a Jaguar sports car gets him fired up about the product. Finally, an irate Megan (Jessica Paré) -- who gets his attention by throwing her dinner plate at the wall and ordering him to »

Maureen Ryan: 'Mad Men' Recap: Flirting WIth Danger

Do not read on unless you've seen Season 5, Episode 10 of AMC's "Mad Men," entitled "Christmas Waltz."

I'm in New York for Monday's Peabody Awards ceremony (and feel free to follow my Twitter for updates on that event). But my weekend has been very busy with travel and other things, and then, as I settled in to my hotel on Sunday night to watch "Mad Men," I realized my hotel does not carry AMC.

So there was a moment of panic.

Thanks to some help from a fan of the show (thank you, Carla Day!), I was able to find a legal way to watch "Mad Men" on Sunday night. But due to time constraints and various other factors, I wasn't able to watch the episode twice, as I normally do, and I wasn't able to take copious notes on my second viewing, another thing I normally do when I'm writing about the show. »
